The long-haul planes (other than the A350) will stay on the legacy Ku Gogo system which is similar tech to what UA/PAC have deployed but not as good as the 2Ku version on the single-aisle fleet.

Fun fact: Same on-board hardware and satellites in use. :-:

This upgrade has been in the works more than a year now. I was in Belgium last November when the new modem/controller was announced and have been anxiously following along as it worked through the manufacture & certification processes to get on board. United has been aggressive with PAC, pushing for the new hardware to show up ASAP.

My understanding is that a few final tweaks to the install process are still happening, after which United expects to increase install rates of the new kit. As it stands today something like 3 United planes per day can be retrofit with the new Panasonic kit on an overnight and the company hopes to increase that throughput.

With the new kit installed the planes not only have a faster modem (~250Mbps v the old ~40Mbps) but also access to newer satellites that are less congested with more coverage in peak usage areas. Specifically the TPAC (Eutelsat 172b) and Americas (SES-14, SES-15) routes will see a massive increase in available capacity as the planes are upgraded. Without the new hardware on board the planes cannot talk to the new satellites with the same level of throughput.

This sign at the HKG UC is a bit dated. I just snapped this picture yesterday.
