Sleep-Enticing Amenities
In addition to the sleep-enticing United Polaris personal suites, several other amenities were designed with our customers' sleep in mind.
In a first-of-its-kind partnership, United has worked with leading luxury specialty store Saks Fifth Avenue for custom-designed bedding. All designed to provide the best sleep in the sky, the new bedding collection will feature plush duvets, lightweight day-blankets and a large and small pillow for each United Polaris customer. In addition, mattress cushions will be available upon request.
Slippers will be available on all flights, and customized United Polaris pajamas will be available by request on flights longer than 12 hours*. Flyers will also be able to request a gel-cooled pillow. New amenity kits will feature ergonomically designed eye shades, calming lavender pillow mist and additional products from Soho House & Co.'s Cowshed Spa.
With the introduction of United Polaris, the airline intends to donate tens of thousands of pillows, blankets and other inflight service items to Fisher House Foundation, which United and its employees have long supported.

There have as yet been no meaningful cuts to bedding. The second pillow was always just a hassle, there was nowhere to put it, especially on an 8 across 772 or 744. The PJs have always been limited to routes with an average flight length of >12 hours.

Gary Leff cites some newsletter as saying that Kirby doesn't like Polaris and will look to scale it back.

So is there any way to get rid of Kirby?
Has UA's financial performance increased since he came on board?
or is the board just going to give him the top job once Oscar leaves and give Kirby like 10 years?
i guess Dao and the dead dog can only accelerate the ouster of Oscar and Kirby's ascendancy.

Maybe they were worried about pillow fights breaking out in Polaris among passengers who had imbibed too many wine flights, or Bloody Mary's from the cart? That center section of 4 J seats in the 772 would offer a tempting space for such a brouhaha.

They should have embraced this concept - reshoot the Animal House pillow fight scene in a darkened cabin . . . . Now that would make me want to fly United.

They could roll out a customer friendly option that could also save money.
roll out pre order food options. No extra choices needed. Bring exactly what people want. Make it super easy to order (ideally as part of check in if not don’t before).
no more “second choice” requests and less wasted food.

It's interesting--in a sad way--to read the first several pages of this thread: optimism abounds. Barely a year later, the wheels are coming off the brand, apparently under the watchful and approving eyes of sr.mgmt. How many are really surprised?

I venture to guess that it would have been a different story if Kirby wasn't around. I also wonder why on earth Oscar has seemingly become such a passive presence as well...think that his initial mishandling of the Dao incident really led him to take a back seat when it came to PR.

The fact is that on my trip to PEK last week the menu does not refer anymore to the pajamas, gel pillows and mattress pads. To the point that yesterday on the return from PEK in the small section of the 772 my wife and I were the only passengers who requested those items. We did request them at boarding and they were provided immediately by FAs that were the greatest team we had lately.
This 772 is the one with 2-4-2 seating. I did notice that for the same price from ORD I could have flown with AA with a 1-2-1 seating.....
