UA has announced that the SFO Polaris lounge is opening 30 April 2018

Summary
The International UC is closed for renovation to a Polaris Club. The SQ & BR lounges have been closed and will be integrated into the new facility. Polaris lounge open 30 April 2018.
SFO Polaris Lounge opens 30 April 2018 (Previews - Press 25th, MP 27th)

The old GFL (near G99) has been converted into a premium cabin international lounge (not an UC). Eventually, it will be converted into a UC for the non-premium cabin international passengers (*G in economy). Now operating as an United Club

The F and E concourse UCs plus again the temporary mezzanine UC lounge (across from Gate 71) are options for those not eligible for the temporary G premium cabin international lounge.

Previous Updates

1 Oct 2017 on united.com
On October 1, the United Club location in the International Terminal will be closed to launch its transition into a United Polaris lounge. An additional United Club location will open across from Gate 71A on the mezzanine level at the end of September. Customers departing out of the International Terminal should allow 10-15 minutes to walk to their gate from the United Club location in Gate 71A or Concourse F.

Closure of San Francisco SilverKris Lounge for renovations

The Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge in San Francisco will be closed for renovations starting from 01 October 2017. As part of the renovations, Singapore Airlines will begin a transition to a newly constructed, shared lounge facility operated by our Star Alliance partner, United Airlines. It is scheduled to open in early 2018.
Earlier thread summary
Summary of posts suggest the present SFO Global First Lounge will be available for much of first half of 2017. Reports are that the current Global First Lounge will become a "regular" UC, while the current international (G Terminal) UC will become a Polaris club (which will integrate the space currently housing the SQ & BR lounges). UA is also constructing a new UC, either in Terminal G or E (or both). Construction has begun in the G Terminal United Club, a large portion of which is now boarded off. Latest info from UA suggests "summer 2018" for the SFO Polaris lounge opening.

That's interesting. They've had the space since the new UC opened. Hard to believe it's gonna take up to a year and a half. You'd think the area would be relatively easy to work since it's a floor above concourse.

I imagine the timing has to do with permitting and bureaucracy.

That's not how I read it. It's a generic "opening by" just like on the website. Could actually open much earlier.

I hope you're right, but this language contrasts with earlier estimates I'd read stating Fall 2017. I even recall one source that had indicated October, which would be nice for me as I have a 747 UD ride out of SFO then. Such a change doesn't suggest opening before the end of this year to me.

It's just their generic "opening by" statement. Almost certainly taken from the website tracker (which I think was discussed earlier in this thread). United Polaris Tracker.

Not sure on how true this is but I have heard this before and just wanted to see if it was legit.

So Ive heard that United business Polaris customers on international flights out of SFO can sometimes get access to the Global First Lounge especially if the UC in the international terminal is overcrowded. Is this the case/Has this happened? Would I specifically have to ask for it? Or have I heard/been misinformed?

BTW Im premier gold if that helps in P class.

Yes, inconsistent reports of this. You usually have to go to the G club first, and may get redirected proactively, or get a 'yes' if you ask. It helps to be 1K and/or full fare J, and there are still plenty of reports of denials. I've done it on a GPUed ticket; others have failed as 1Ks in Z or D.

So feel free to ask, but do not expect.

SFO GF lounge?

I'm flying to China in mid-October through SFO. I'm excited to see the 777-300 to Beijing, as this COULD be my first "Polaris" experience. (Sad to see that I won't ride the 747 again, however). Here's my question: nowhere do I see a plane from SFO to any destination in China (nor Asia, for that matter) with the old Global First product, so if this is the case, what will become of the GF lounge? Thanks, for feedback.

Polaris eventually eliminates global first, all United planes will be 2 class once the refits are complete.

GFL gets revamped into a Polaris Lounge eventually

If I read the wiki correctly, there will still be flights with a GF cabin from SFO to FRA, ICN, PVG, and TPE in September. As Hipplewm noted, United will eventually open a Polaris Lounge at SFO, and then they will close the GFL and convert it to a United Club. In the mean time, the GFL will continue to service int'l F customers departing SFO (and GS in J, and lucky 1Ks in J as well).

No. GFL becomes United Club. Existing UC becomes Polaris. Additional UC to be built as well.

I'm looking at flying from SFO on New Year's Eve. Any chance that the new Polaris Lounge will have opened by then?

No specific openning dates have been publicly stated. The latest from UA is "early 2018" so would assume the chances are low for NYE.
