Changes in SFO-NRT equipment?

Looks like 777-300ER is switching to the old 3-class 777-200 on SFO-NRT starting in the fall and continuing into 2019. What's going on?

On the one hand, it may simply be aligning capacity to demand. With more HND flights on UA and NH, there may be less NRT demand. I would not read too much into the fact that UA is programming the 3-class 772. I expect they will only be selling C and Y class, and that as more reconfigured 772's are completed, they may well operate this with reconfigured 772s

The past three NRT-SFO-NRT flights I've taken this year have not been full, and have even had seats go out empty in biz.

Their nonstop fares tend to be ridiculous on SFO-NRT. Sometimes nothing lower than an H for sale and J is rarely under $6.5k.

Well I usually transfer to Korea, and am going in the opposite direction, but I've never paid more than ~$2.5k for Polaris. (P fare)

The opposite direction gets better pricing. In January, on my return from PVG, I was waitlisted for a GPU upgrade. The day before my flight, UA was selling Polaris PVG-ORD-PVG for $2,500 with the departure being my flight. This was one third of the price they wanted for ORD-PVG-ORD purchased 3 months ahead of the trip and the price never dropped.

SFO-NRT often priced using an SFO-ICN fare (routes SFO-NRT-ICN-SFO), despite there usually being a $500 or $800 surcharge for Japan stopovers. The TYO fare table is insane.

Published yes, but I suspect they are heavily discounting to Japanese corporate customers - no one with a functioning brain would be paying UA's retail prices ex-Japan when they could be riding in NH F on cheaper fares plus NH upgrade instruments, or doing the same on JAL if they are not aligned to *A. My experience across many flights to/from Japan seems to indicate, at least to my own observation, UA is very heavily westerner vs Asian in J, while NH is the opposite, and it's not just pricing - who in their right mind would pay Neiman Marcus prices while shopping at Target?

Yes this is definitely true. I'm quite lucky I can snag good fares and traveling in the opposite direction helps me do that. Well that and using my overseas address usually changes the cost too.

I'm seeing that trips booked far out like, 5-9 months out are ridiculously expensive though. $7k+ in a lot of instances.

Tracing my aircraft backwards from today, it did EWR/SFO and SFO/HNL in the past week, along with TLV and PEK.

No more E or E+ flying on this route anymore. I would rather do AI nonstop or a one stop

Polaris 772 HKG-ORD/EWR when?

I've significantly downgraded my UA award and paid business travel after hitting UA 1MM due to a noncompetitive old style UA business seating from Hong Kong and excellent alternatives like EVA HKG - TPE - JFK/ORD.

When should I expect that I can move some of my spend back to United Airlines? I primarily fly HKG - ORD / NYC so I am guess it is dependent on
  1. when JFK - HKG switches to a 772 with Polaris or when ORD - HKG switches to a 772 with Polaris?
  2. and which could I expect first? Chicago or New York?
thanks much
