All international business class flights on UA ( except some S.America routes) are Polaris business class. If you are looking for Polaris seats, those are on 777-300s and a few 767s. If you see a blue seatmap instead of orange seats, you have the Polaris seats.

A couple 772s also have the new seating.

Canadian/Mexico/Central America/Caribbean front cabins are marketed as Business, so not all int’l business class flights on UA are Polaris. However, all Business cabins marketed as Polaris Business are Polaris Business class🙂

Exactly! No other rule or generalization need be stated.

But seat maps on UA still show 2-4-2 config - Flight 901 SFO to LHR

I've read the posts on this forum but when i look at seats it still shows the the old 2-4-2 config on flight 901. What am i missing here?

Depends on the day

901 is normally a new configuration 77W and the later flight 930 is an old 777-200 2-4-2 configuration. For instance, next Saturday is set up that way, which is why I’m taking the earlier flight.

But frame swaps or occasional changes are certainly possible. If your timing is flexible check the seat map for 930 on the same day, or 901 a day earlier or later.

Theoretically, LHR/FRA/NRT/HKG flight attendants can staff domestic legs as part of a longhaul pairing to/from their domicile, but logistically it doesn't make much sense.

I selected flight 901 based on the wiki post:

SFO/LHR (UA 901/949) - StartedApril 23, 2018 (Previously scheduled in March)

However checking the seat map (again) it still shows the old config for both flights (UA901 & UA930) out in Dec: Sorry to be a pain here but I haven't flown United in years, if the plane changes how do they handle the pre-assigned seating for a family of four?

They don't. Groups often get split up when there's an aircraft swap. It pays to keep an eye on your reservation and claim the best possible seats you can get after a swap; even if you can't get back together, having good seats will provide currency for trading once you're on the plane.

It's likely that there will be other groups looking to trade if a swap happens.

If the seat map changes, it will be to the 1-2-1 Polaris seat config... in which case you have no choice but to split into 2's... and for the word, these seats are far superior and worth it. Since there are only 5 B772s with the new Polaris and PE seating with a few more coming in the next couple of months, chances are that the old config is what you will get and nothing changes.

So I have been looking at LHR-SFO-LHR flights for Oct/Nov, and on the 777-200 on the flights I have selected the F seats in E+ and E have always been greyed out. It is lots of flights I have noticed this on when I have been looking. The 777-200 is actually 9 across isn't it? So, there is no F in economy (geddit? ) and I guess they have made change to show the 10 across for the old planes but they are not really. But for the 777-200 20C/H does not exist (I believe) so if it shows 777-200 and I select 20B/J will I get an aisle seat?

interesting - 901 SFO-LHR seems to have reverted to a 777-200 for all of December

Right, 901 (and 930 still) are now 777-200 all thru December, or at least for the dozen or so dates I checked. I wonder why? Maybe shifting the 77W to a higher demand route? I would have thought that SFO-LHR is a high demand route, and there are multiple other carriers serving it non-stop.
I’d also expect there to be MORE Polaris seat planes by December, not fewer, so reassigning a “good” plane makes even less sense.
Odd.

Odd.
I believe they are downgauging to double-daily 772 because of the seasonal drop in Y demand... although it also drops the J seat count by 12 so I'm not sure. AKL gets a 77W at the end of October, and there might be other routes that need the frame.

I didn't realise what a lottery this was going to become again. Very tedious indeed.
