2013 "Upsell Offers to Business/First (UFC/PCU)" Questions/Discussion (Paid Upgrades)

PCU (Premium Cabin Upsell) Nets extra PQM's and can be done at purchase or anytime before checkin if prompted. This will book into a business/first bucket.
UFC (Upgrade For Cash) is done at checkin (online, counter, lounge, gate) and will not earn extra PQM's.
TOD (Tens of Dollars); please post at another thread Post your TOD buy-up experiences here [2016 Edition]
From #198 of the TOD thread by thejaredhuang: "I think there's still a distinction (from upsell thread). This thread is more about offers at check-in, I always read TOD as Time of Departure anyways."

Here's a fun one. I had no idea there were $11,500 fares IAH-EWR (taking into account the $1200 paid for the economy fare).

Are you sure those aren't HKG dollars?

The fare Y IAH to EWR is each way $5,698.10 all-in ($5,287.44 base fare). That's my best guess as to what is being used as the mark, but as to why... this is why I believe all the upsell pricing irregularities are just utterly incompetent IT.

That is so silly! Others around here will know this a lot better, but doesn't $2000 to $3000 per hour get you a reasonably nice, small private jet? Does anyone actually pay $11,000+ to fly commercial domestic on a half-con?

No. What we normally talk about as "full Y" is YUA, which is a $963.72 base fare each way. While few people buy this most expensive ticket in the cabin, some can (and sometimes it's the only fully refundable fare).

As to why Y stays on file... I don't really know. My best guess is that it has something to do with certain opaque fares being calculated as a fraction of that fare - maybe government YCA fares, for example? That and it's slightly more static than YUA - for example, the "normal" YUA is blacked out for the NCAA Final Four tournament in Houston, and replaced with a higher YUA with a BF of $1,456.75.

$1,199 to upgrade from (upgraded) BF to GF on UA871 SFO TPE - clicked "NO" as fast as my mouse could move. I can get unlimited bowls of much tastier soup at Sweet Tomatoes for only $9.

Currently in FRA waiting for UA 906. Flew over in A, back in Z - was offered buy-up to GF for $829 - declined but this was one of my better offers ever. Note that GF is booked 0/8. 8 Non-Rev's now on waitlist at T-3 - looks like GF will go out full and keeps its well deserved reputation. Not surprised, not delighted.
