Some interesting CPU stats on the folks that in their posts identified that most of their travel was within the 48 states. Of the people that identified % amounts, and not including some lucky outliers (95% -- wow?) and painful-to-see (0%s), the average of the 12 data points is 31%. The 24% rate I noted in my OP doesn't seem so abnormal anymore.

That is horrible. I'm 75K PQM already Plat so far, going to hit 1K soon, but debating to switch airlines. I only fly SFO to BOS / JFK / ORD / PHX. Based on your #, I am still doomed in 1K.

You're somewhat doomed with these city pairs. Especially if you travel Mon/Thurs like everyone else in business casual attire.

I think the entire "complementary" upgrade scheme has generally been terrible for domestic upgrades on United. One should have to earn them in some way, or pay for them - bring back the 500 mile coupons!

Just cleared both directions SFO-SEA, including the early flight today on a 319. On an L fare. Feeling a little guilty

Curious: at that low rate, why do you stay with UA, rather than use VX for example for the cities you mention? Also, will the 2015 change in RDM accrual change your loyalty? UA and other carriers readily acknowledge that the primary benefit preferred by FFs are the F upgrades. When they can't deliver that, why stick around (unless one is hub captive)? Appears that your travel pattern would allow you to use other carriers, esp VX I believe.

Just decided to figure mine out for fun. 6/19 upgrade eligible flights so far in 2014 as Gold, which is about 31%. Interestingly enough, about half of those are LAS-SFO or the other way around. I definitely go to PIT the most, which I have never been upgraded leaving from. Almost all of the cheap flights there go through IAH, which is nearly impossible. If I can go through DEN it's a lot easier. Going in and out of LAS is really timing dependent for upgrades, obviously.

I'd be delighted with 24% - I am currently at 14% and was 0% last year. The only reason I am not at 0% is that I picked a 787 for an SFO-IAH segment and cleared at #12 on the list.
