If the DidItClear website is going to be effective, it needs more members and trip upgrade data!
Please visit https://www.diditclear.com/ and include your trip experience with CPU's, RPU's, GPU's and any other means of upgrading available on United.
The better the data, the better the search results and experiential history.

Remember too you can't be in a P or a Z (unless GS gets a special bypass around this)

I have an itin ($1,050; 25,436 miles) I booked today which is YYZ-IAH-HNL-GUM-HKG-SIN and vice versa (booked in K class, so all segments except HNL-GUM and vice versa should be upgradable with RPUs, and by extension, GPUs)
But when I look at upgrading online using instruments, it's breaking up my itin into 2 upgradeable segments each way: YYZ-IAH-HNL-GUM-HKG and HKG-SIN.
But when I look at upgrading online using instruments, it's breaking up my itin into 2 upgradeable segments each way: YYZ-IAH-HNL-GUM-HKG and HKG-SIN.
I have a similar itin booked: YVR-SFO-HNL [12.5 hour layover] HNL-GUM-HKG.
When I tried to apply an RPU to this, it wants to consume two instruments. (Probably because of the 12+ hour stop in HNL)
When I called to try and apply it as one-shot over the phone, I got a clueless agent that says GUM-HKG requires a GPU.. Anyways, I hung-up. Applied the RPU to HNL-GUM-HKG (without the HNL-GUM, cause RPUs can't be used on this leg.. It says Restricted.) and phoned back to have the agent stretch my RPU on to YVR-SFO-HNL..
Initially I had an argument about R space not available, but I was like fine.. just waitlist me..
After she did that, When I looked online it says:
YVR SFO - R Class Requested
SFO HNL - CPU Eligible.
Did she apply it right? or do I have to HUCA..
I now believe I have a married segment because
YVR-SFO shows R0
SFO-HNL shows R6
Searching YVR-SFO-HNL shows R0
Is it easy to get another agent to split this and confirm upgrade SFO-HNL for now?
Do I need call back to get SFO-HNL waitlisted because it doesn't say R Class Requested?

Your (or your mom's) next recourse is the Department of Transportation consumer complaint form, http://www.dot.gov/airconsumer/file-consumer-complaint . This triggers an internal review process which will get a more thorough investigation and a fair response from UA.
You (or she) should include salient details like:
(*) Booked in coach in seat 17B. Her record locator is [xxx] and her e-ticket number is [yyy].
(*) Applied a confirmable upgrade instrument gifted from her child
(*) Upgrade apparently did not clear, she boarded in coach (17B boarding pass was scanned and she boarded the plane)
(*) Online, the united.com Web site shows that her upgrade was confirmed and she was assigned seat 1A, but this never happened.
(*) She was traveling with her spouse, in seat 17A with record locator [aaa] and e-ticket number [bbb], who can confirm that she was never notified of an upgrade for her seat.
(*) United, when contacted, says that they they cannot return the upgrade instrument because the traveler flew in business class.

The eTicket itinerary receipt from the website also shows class as R, but no seat assignment.
Does this situation fall under the GG OVS DOWNGRADE policy? Or did something else happen? As the RPU was sponsored, still waiting to hear back if it was returned.

Mrs. GretelNick and I are waitlisted on a sponsored RPU. I'm Silver; she has no status. The flight is two weeks out. Leisure route, showing F4, PN0 and R0.
Should we split PNR to increase the probability of both of us getting upgraded? We don't mind being split up if necessary, and are okay with IRROPS risk.
But it's also not clear splitting works the way it should.
If we split the PNR, do the RPU's need to be reapplied or do they stick with each pax?

As an experience ....
I booked Syd->SFO->DEN->LAX->MEL back in july for late jan 2015 as a W fare was within reason and I knew I was going to need the MR run for next year max layover is sub 4 hours in any place
System let my apply a single GPU online and all legs have now cleared
I should note.... the system lists the flight as a SYD->MEL iten

That's it, as long as you follow the layover rules (CW seems to be 4 hours or next flight out) then the only time an itinerary breaks is when you hit the same airport a second time. It can of course be constructed of multiple one-way fares... but that can even happen on a one-stop trip.

Would that mean that I could do BRU-IAD-ORD-GRU-IAH-EWR-FRA on one GPU as long as the layover is under 4 hour on each connection or I take the next available flight (which in case of the ORD-GRU-IAH connection would be after ~12 hours)? That would be a lot of premium-cabin flying for that single GPU...

My mention of 4 hours or next flight is a fare rule (not an upgrade rule*), meaning if the actual fare was WAS-SAO (fares don't use airport codes) then you could legally fly it with a 12 hour connection in ORD. However, with an itinerary like that the cheaper fare could also be something like BRU-CHI-SAO-HOU. If there's a "natural" fare break at Chicago THEN the 12 hour layover could cause your trip to be considered two one ways. As you can see this is a grey area where the system, every agent (let alone the fare desk), and who knows who else could come to a different answer.
*P.S. the upgrade rule is one instrument per one way, but I've never seen it more specifically defined... While I've never heard of such a thing it's technically possible they have a separate definition of one-way for GPUs than they do for fare rules.
