I have to book a ticket from DEL to EWR and back in January. If my schedule is flexible, which day of the week should I pick that gives me the best chance for the upgrade using my GPU

I have some GPU's which expire at the end of January, 2014. I would like to use these on a flight in June, 2014.

1) To use these GPU's, does the booking/upgrade have to be before the expiration date or does the travel date have to precede the expiration? Is it even possible to use the January GPU's on a June flight?

2) I also have some other GPU's (and some RPU's) that expire in 2015. When I upgrade, is it possible to specify that I am using the earlier expiring GPU's?

3) At this point the flight has R9 for upgrade space. If for some reason the upgrade does not clear, will the GPU's be redeposited with the old expiration dates?

The T & C for GPU clearly says that the date of travel has to be before the expiry of the GPU.
You may try to get one GPU date extended after mid dec and that also is a maybe. They usually extend for 90 days only. I called them to try for my own GPU and was told to try back next month

Forgot to answer the last question. yes, if your upgrade does not clear, the GPU will come back to your account with it's original expiration date.
The system does pick the GPU with the most recent expiration date first.

Use SWU/RPU now for 2014 flights?

I am now a 1K, but will drop down to gold in 2014. I have some reservations to make for early 2014, and I wonder if I can burn my current SWU/RPU's for those - and will they be a valid upgrade when I take my trip in 2014 despite not being a 1K anymore?

If the RPU/SWU is valid for your flight dates (not expired) then you can use them for your 2014 flights.

They do not become invalid when you drop down to plat or gold.

GPUs and RPUs generally expire on January 31, the same date that the previous year status levels drop. So, it's unlikely your GPUs and RPUs will be valid beyond that date unless you were provided GPUs and RPUs for some reason other than earning 0P or 1K.

If by early 2014 you mean January, sure, use them.

Btw, you do understand that even though you will drop to gold in 2014, you will be a 1K until the end of January, right?

must check in to use rpu?

I am in Seoul right. Wanted to apply rpu to domestic connecting flight. There is r space available. Called united on Skype, agent told me I have to check in at the airport in order to get on upgrade list. There is nothing she can do...

Is this nonsense

Depends on how you asked the question.

You actually can't/shouldn't be able to use an RPU within 24 hours, but you only will show on the upgrade list itself once you check-in.

Without knowing how you asked the question or the context, hard to say any further.

If you have access to the net for Skype, wouldn't it be easier to just use that access to apply the RPU online?

The problem is I had done a SDC and had already applied an RPU (which was on a waiting list) on the other flight. So, the website would not allow me to apply the RPU.

Business class is now full, so it looks like I am S.O.L. sigh.

I guess in the future, I will never apply an RPU unless the is R-space, it is seems to pretty much guarantee one will not get upgraded.
