Newest Travel Bank program
New UA "Travel Bank" option -- deposit funds and get a bonus

{UA} we’ve decided to discontinue the program as of April 23, 2019.
In particular, the united.com Club
united.com Club

As we keep evolving the digital experience for our travelers, we’ve decided to discontinue the united.com Club. If you’re a current member, there are a few things we hope you keep in mind.

Although you’ll no longer be able to renew your membership, you’ll continue to receive the benefits of the united.com Club until your current membership period expires. If you booked any trips before the end of your current membership, we’ll credit any united.com Club benefits to your TravelBank after you’ve completed your trip.

For more questions about the program, call us at 1-800-UNITED-1.

5 April 2018 -- UA started posting an "expiration date", appears to be at least 18 months after most recent activity (some are longer for unknown reasons)
also states
Some of your United®TravelBank Cash may expire on a different date than what’s displayed here. Please check your balance details for a complete history of your United®TravelBank Cash transactions and the expiration date for each amount.
Expiration had previously been in the T&Cs for some time (2 years of inactivity? but now is 18 months) and had stated an ETC would be issued if the funds did timeout. Unclear if that still applies.

The Gift Registry has been disabled since Fall 2017 (Sept?) (appears this may be related to a tax issue?)
As of 5 May 2018, it still states
We're sorry, our gift registry page is currently unavailable for maintenance. You can still use the funds from your gift registry to book travel during this time, but you will not be able to receive contributions or update your registry details. We expect the page to be up and running again in early 2018.
Around Sept 2018, wording changed to
We're sorry, our gift registry page is currently unavailable for maintenance. You can still use the funds from your gift registry to book travel during this time, but you will not be able to receive contributions or update your registry details.

Thanks for the advise.

If I change the refundable / changeable ticket to a non-refundable / non-changeable low fare when I actually want to use the ticket to fly, will the system allow me?

I have often found the rules regarding non-refundable and/or non-changeable to come with a lot of riders, especially when making the payment with Travel Bank funds, so I'm ok with losing a small amount of the Travel Bank funds by buying a ticket say worth $50, and knowing definitively that it will extend my remaining Travel Bank funds for a year.

Thoughts?

Yes. A refundable ticket is basically just cash that's good for one year. I'm not exactly sure what form the refund would be, but I can't imagine the funds would be forfeit.

FYI: Refundable does not necessarily mean refundable for free. Same goes for changeable.

Unrestricted is the UA term for full refundable / changeable, https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...on-please.html

Need help - I booked a $49 one-way ticket in basic economy using travel bank funds that are expiring today 12-31-2019, so I can extend the remaining funds ($100 plus) for another year, but the travel bank expiration date has not reset. Anybody experience similar?

Hard to find an unrestricted fare for $160. Appreciate help, thanks!

I'm ok forfeiting the $49 but the clock on remaining Travel Bank funds is not resetting which is the issue.

When do you make this booking?
It may not change until after the 24 hour cancellation window.

Hello WineCountryUA, thanks for the prompt response. I bought the ticket today. Since the funds were expiring today itself, I did not want to take a chance until tomorrow, and also checked with a phone agent who said that any unused travel bank funds will be forfeited.

So I canceled the non-refundable $49 ticket, and instead bought an unrestricted economy ticket domestic US travel for Nov-2020 by using complete value of the Travel Bank funds plus some extra money paid via credit card. This is what you suggested in the first instance, right?

Hoping that I'll be able to change this ticket to something else before Nov-2020 since the fare I purchased today was unrestricted. Thanks for your advise!

It was one solution that did not have a throwaway element. Waiting to the last minute to do things like this is risky as there is little or no recovery time but looks like you got it done just in time.

But the fact the $49 was refunded may point to the lack of the updating of the expiration in the first try -- the funds may not be considered used until the 24-hour cancellation window is passed. UA generally just places a pending hold on credit cards until the 24-hour window has passed and only formally make the charged afterwards.

So I just received an email from UA this morning in ref. to the United.com club. Note it says 2019, not 2020, so I’m not sure if it’s a mistake or what the deal is..

We appreciate you being a member of the united.com Club. However, we've decided to discontinue the program as of April 23, 2019.

Your current subscription expires in 30 days and we won't charge your credit card for renewal.

You'll continue to receive credits in your TravelBank after you've completed travel for any tickets you purchased during your membership period.

We hope you enjoyed your membership in united.com Club and we look forward to seeing you on board soon.

The decision to discontinue the program was made in April 2019 but those with subscriptions that extended into the future continued to be eligible until the subscription expired. As a reminder, UA is sending out an email reminding you of the expiration of your subscription for this discontinued program.

I recall that, though I would’ve worded the email better (imo). I suppose it doesn’t matter too much right now given the lack of travel due to Covid...

United should consider bringing back the program as an incentive.
