Consolidated "Why is this UA fare so expensive?" thread

Potential reasons for high fares
-- the lower fare classes are sold out
-- the lower fare classes are not available due to fare rule restrictions
..... day of the week travel restrictions, Saturday night stay requirement, minimum stay requirement, advance purchase requirements, ...
-- desired fares are not combinable
-- discount fares not available for one-ways, only roundtrips Why are international OWs so expensive, such high fare classes?
-- discount inventory for codeshare marketing airline is gone, but flight operator may have discount fare (or the reverse)
-- Plating -- airlines restrict the best fare to their ticket stock, meaning ticketing that flight on another ticket stock will be more expensive
-- Airline is figuring it will still sell (due to last minute purchases0 even if the competition is lower earlier. Such as peak leisure periods or special events.
-- Airline is placing a premium on non-stop (monopoly?) versus alternative connecting routings

If you find an expensive flight, start by checking the fare class and compare to the less expensive option -- that generally will explain a lot.

is this a glitch? fares for next March 1!

Looking to do a SEA-ORD RT in late Feb. 2018 with a Mar. 1 return.

The UA site offers normal range of econ, unlimited econ & First for the SEA-ORD segment, but from Feb. 28 onward, there is NO Econ fare available and the unlimited econ is over $1000. For a whole series of days there are no regular econ fares available.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: Evidently the website is showing fares up to Mar 3, 2018 but UA is not selling beyond Feb. 24 or 25 (the 330 day horizon). So, nothing to see here folks.

When flights are loaded into the calendar they initially have only F, J, Y, and B inventory. I think this is probably to try to cut down on the impact of bugs while someone checks out whether the load was correct.

Just wait a week or so and the inventory will normalize. Note the schedule only goes through 02-Mar-18 right now.

Also, there's not a huge upside for UA to selling discount economy fares far in advance. They'll load the flights into the schedule -- and, yes, they'll add some discount buckets in a few days -- but often they'd rather leave prices relatively high and see who takes them up on the offer. There's always time to lower prices later.

Typically, for domestic flights, the best fares are available somewhere between 3 months and 2 weeks before the flight. (The airlines work hard to make it difficult to predict the exact best time to buy, for obvious reasons). That's not to say that you shouldn't book a ticket if you see a fare that you like -- just that there's plenty of time to wait if you don't like what you see initially.

SFO-TYO is also quite expensive. I was similarly forced to buy an H for a trip in early June. There's no nonstop competition, so UA/NH basically have their way with us.

Ironically, I can fly 2000 miles farther to HKG, for half the price.

Yes, originating in CLE. I'm sort of hesitant to do two tickets in case of IRROPS. It looks like all fare class availability is at 9, but no fares filed below H.

Yes, although this takes place at a much lower level. It's relatively uncommon for fares lower than T to be published that are valid more than 3 months out, but the baseline ~T price is usually available at EOS once the flights get inventory. UA then pushes "fares for the current quarter" sporadically which tend to be discounts to the same fare codes, or a new batch of L/K/G fares which were not seen before. These fares are also very frequently just matches of the local LCC who is actually the only cause of reasonable prices in the first place.

All of that of course depends on market; more competitive markets tend to have more consumer-friendly pricing.

I doubt fares will go up, might go down, although price for fares in next few weeks are not much different. $600 fare differential is pretty expensive IRROPS insurance

Ha, trying a 3 segment search on ITA matrix, I can get CLE-SFO-ICN-NRT and return, with ICN-NRT-ICN on OZ for $1,500 booking into S/V. How's connecting in ICN?

ICN is easy. But SFO-ICN is on the 744. Not your ideal Y experience.

Two tix with a long connection at LAX may be your best option.

Well, that would mean an overnight connection in LAX, as the morning CLE-LAX would only get me 30 minutes.

Can't price a stopover?

So, I'm looking at the YYZ-PVG P sale fare PPE03DM5. I don't have any particular need to go to Toronto, and certainly not twice within a short period of time, so I was hoping to defer one of the positioning flights. However, I simply cannot get the fare to price with a stopover. Any ideas?

I won't bother pasting the routing rules -- they're basically what you'd expect and allow routing through the US hubs, TYO, BJS, and HKG, plus Hawaii and Guam. Here's the stopover text:

I don't know what "IN AREA 3" is supposed to modify -- 'none in Guam in area 3," or "none in Guam; only in area 3"? Regardless, I can't get this to price with the stopover in Asia or in the US.

Any ideas? What am I missing here? :-) TIA.

I am able to price with Matrix and got a Priceline offering through bookwithmatrix, but no .bomb link. Perhaps worth a call to the rate desk if that's what you want. The Area 1 stopover is a no-go. Very nice fare! 10 cents per BIS mile in J, and can pick up both the 744 on SFO-PVG and the 77W to HKG.

Great, thank you! I'm not sure why I couldn't get the same thing -- I could only get Matrix to price out the KA flight to HKG if it was part of a connection. As soon as I made it a stopover, it switched the fare class to J on that leg and inserted a fare break.

A US stopover would have been the most useful, but I agree with your interpretation. I was just confused by the wording. (It would make a lot more sense as "1 in each direction at CAD100 in Area 3; none in Guam" instead of the way it's written).

And, I noticed the surcharge, but for some reason I missed the "SHA" part and thought it only applied to BJS (they also have some in there for CTU travel, even though CTU isn't a valid routing -- I assume this is from a template they're using). UA seems to love surcharges this year. :-(
