Why are international OWs so expensive, such high fare classes?

I searched flight from HKG to SFO or ORD on CO website. It shows that direct flights are Y fares priced high up at 1700+.

How come?? What is UA's revenue tickets' rule??

Welcome to FT. When are you looking to travel?

Honestly $1700 HKG-ORD seems pretty legit if your travel date is close. I've seen fares much higher for last minute travel.

I'm not sure what you mean by "UA's rules". UA is going to charge as much as they can for that, or any, segment. They are here to (try to) make money.

$1700 for full Y? That's not that bad on that route... I was seeing $1700 in W for several May dates.

Sorry i didn't specify my date of travel, which is a mid-august one-way.

If you're looking to fly one way, using miles would be a great option if you have them. Plenty of saver award availability from BKK.

International OW are usually very expensive and high fare class. Not uncommon for RTs to be be the same or sometimes even cheaper. Also the cost may depend on the direction.

15 August (economy lowest fare available united.com)
HKG-ORD OW $1,702.70
ORD-HKG OW $714.40
ORD-HKG RT (1 week stay) $1,524.90
HKG-ORD RT (1 week stay) $1,977.30

isn't airline pricing fun!

Airfares never cease to amaze me. You would think they would satisfy the triangle inequality (or the airfare version of it). Basically that A-B-C would cost more than A-B. Once you break that bit of logic, it's a wild, wild world

Yes, it could indeed be cheaper than HKG-SFO. However, unless you plan to fly to XXX, you'd be violating the contract of carriage and could have problems down the line.

The only way that I know of to get affordable international 1-way tickets on UA/LH/AC/LX/NH/etc is to go to my local travel agency/consolidator - he can break a roundtrip fare into 2 one-way tickets.

The airline will try to charge you close to full fare....

I randomly searched HKG-ORD one way on Expedia for 8/8 and found an Air Canada itinerary (via YYZ) for $1342. HKG-YYZ class W, YYZ-ORD class V.

You don't need to go through Canadian immigration when flying through YVR or YYZ T1.
