Today's weekly data from the ONS survey. In the week 24 to 30 April 2022 for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 25 April to 1 May 2022 for Scotland:
|

The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 198.4 today. Scotland is now only reporting headline data on Monday and Thursday which means the UK data gets the same updates. I will carry on with these updates for a while, but it may be that they will move to a weekly update as daily data becomes more sparse. |
Patients on ventilation seems to be plummeting sharply..
|
Daily data:
Cases 8,135 (16,611 last Wednesday) Deaths 207 (227) Patients admitted 992 (1,227 the 265th) Patients in hospital 9,619 (11,752 on the 2nd) Patients in ventilation beds 214 (286 on the 2nd) Vaccinated up to and including 4 May 2022: First dose: 53,264,512 Second dose: 49,780,389 Booster: 39,345,313 The rolling seven day daily average for cases is now down 24.9% on the previous week and the same measure for deaths is up 13.1%. The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 195.6 today. Neither Ni or Scotland are reporting cases/deaths today and some of the other figures for healthcare are absent too. In England, the number of people in ventilation beds continues to fall at a respectable rate. For England, that has fallen from 241 to 170 in the last week. |
The number of daily deaths is about the same as those on ventilation beds, that's a little unusual, but I am guessing some artifact of reporting...

Daily data:
Cases 14,564 (12,487 last Thursday) Deaths 186 (438) Patients admitted 737 (903 on the 1st) Patients in hospital 7,577 (10,795 on the 5th) Patients in ventilation beds 190 (253 on the 5th) Vaccinated up to and including 4 May 2022: First dose: 53,264,512 Second dose: 49,780,389 Booster: 39,345,313 The rolling seven day daily average for cases is now down 8.7% on the previous week and the same measure for deaths is down 13.1%. The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 159.6 today. We have a bit more data today, however NI have not managed to provide anything for a few days and the Welsh also did not add anything for today either. The cases figure covers 3 days for Scotland, making today's figure hard to interpret. Deaths should be very close as NI would normally report just 3. The same problems affect the healthcare data. The real figure for patients in hospital is likely to be about 850 higher. I have made a guess that Wales has 15 people in ventilation beds and NI none which means the total figure should be very close to being correct. It is still falling at a good rate. |
I will change the data reporting from here on in as not much is being published. Today we only have England and Wales reporting cases. England reported 6,511 today which is the lowest since the middle of June last year. I don't think we will see any useful data until Tuesday, but here is what the ONS have.
Today's weekly data from the ONS survey. In the week ending 7 May 2022: One in 45 people in England had Covid (down from one in 35) One in 35 in Wales had Covid (down from one in 25) One in 55 in Northern Ireland had Covid (down from one in 40) One in 35 in Scotland had Covid (down from one in 30) |
Well, here is some daily data. With different nations reporting in less consistent ways the accuracy may not be what it used to be:
Cases 22,337 (8,760 last Monday) Deaths 153 (70) Patients admitted 833 (1,010 on the 3rd) Patients in hospital 8,152 (10,295 on the 6th) Patients in ventilation beds 189 (237 on the 6th) Vaccinated up to and including 11 May 2022: First dose: 53,337,395 Second dose: 49,844,562 Booster: 39,474,656 The rolling seven day daily average for cases is now down 16.0% on the previous week and the same measure for deaths is down 18.0%. The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 140.9 today. The news continues to be good with all the indicators heading the right way, even if it is not clear by exactly how much. |

I get slightly different sets of numbers, it would be surprising if it wasn't so. But the news is overwhelmingly good now, with NHS sickness absences below the average for the time of year.
There a number of benchmark improvements. The death toll is now below 1,000 per week for the first time in 2 months. And since about Saturday the UK wide 7 day infection rate per 100k population has been below 100, today it is 93. The 14 day rate, used in the ECDC table, is 204. That's the lowest infection rate - albeit with a few shifted goal posts - since mid June 2021. Normally viral diseases don't do well at this time of year, so while on some indices the infection rate is perhaps showing signs of levelling off a bit, I would expect to at least another few weeks of good reductions. Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow still have relatively high rates at around 150 per 100k per 7 days, though the gap between these places and the UK average is only 50% or so, which is narrow by the standards of this pandemic. |
