With delta it was five weeks after the cases peak before deaths started falling. Looking at the current numbers I think we will see the figure for deaths falling within a week.

Four to six weeks.

I wonder why in the UK we don’t report on the percentage of positive tests. Isn’t it a good indicator, especially with the number of daily tests going down?

That data is available. Have a look here:

https://ourworldindata.org/explorers...BR~DEU~ITA~FRA

The UK is currently at 7% from that, which compares favourably with other countries.

And it’s going down, which is also reassuring.

You can obviously draw your own calculation, and various data presentation websites do exactly that. Internally we've not really used it because we've long divided up the testing cases in to multiple pillars, and the one we focus a lot on - internal hospitat results of existing patients - isn't a metric used much by other people. As is well known the other devolved administrations have their approaches too, and by the time you get to international comparisons it get fairly hopeless. So in a way it's probably relaxed enough to say that below 5% you have the situation under control, over 20% you haven't and/or you aren't testing enough.

This weeks ONS survey is out. This is the BBC reporting of it:

There has been a record drop in the number of Covid infections in the UK, according to the latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

Around 2.87 million people would have tested positive in the week to 23 April - 900,000 fewer than the week before.

The ONS research found:
  • One in 25 people in England has Covid (down from one in 17)
  • One in 18 in Wales has Covid (down from one in 15)
  • One in 25 in Northern Ireland has Covid (which is little changed from the week before)
  • One in 25 in Scotland has Covid (down from one in 19)
Infections fell in all regions of England. They are highest in the North East (6.1% testing positive) and lowest in London (3.6%).
