So it seems like the under 40's are going to be offered an alternative to AZ:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/h...-b1842455.html

My question is, does this mean under 40's now are eligible to go and get the vaccine, or will this slow things down for those of us in the mid-30s?

Yes they will give some confirmation or otherwise. The figures I quoted come from the government and can be seen here:

Transit passengers will not appear in these figures. I do not know how well those are holding up. There will be a very small number of people that are exempt from the testing too. The increase in the hotel quarantine number is likely to be down to India being on the red list on the 23rd.

definitely not doubting your data pull. Just hard to believe the underlying numbers!

Here are the England stats as of Sunday night 2 May 2021

For reference, this was the situation of the previous Sunday 25 April 2021.

As I think is well known, most vaccinations at the moment are second doses, but there should be another round of first doses coming up, notably towards the end of May. The 80+ figure has technically gone down because of new people arriving in that age group, but it's more of a rounding figure.[/QUOTE]

In one cluster at a care home, 14 elderly residents who have all been vaccinated were infected with the variant, the source said. A number needed hospital treatment but not for severe disease, and it is thought all have now recovered.

It certainly explains why my local gp led clinic has 4 Pfizer days next week vs 1 AZ, a reversal of the situation up until now.

Up until recently the challenge in the supply chain has been vaccine supply. Given that the online booking system is geared to sending people to mass vac centres and pharmacies, both AZ exclusively round here, and it is the younger people becoming eligible to book online, there could be a bottle neck in booking people appointments.

One other bit of data to support the drop in the figures during April, passenger movements between UK and India/Pakistan were more than double movements between UK/USA. Only the whole of the EU traffic exceeded the Indian sub-continent total.

Given the lack of evidence that it is vaccine resistant, it would be pretty hard to justify.

If anyone wishes to join the Valneva vaccine trial: https://www.ukcovid19study.com/nihr?...6-002248003405

Valneva – UK COVID-19 Vaccine Study Opening Now

You have received this email because you previously registered with the NHS COVID-19 vaccine research registry.

A new COVID-19 vaccine study is starting and looking for healthy adult volunteers to participate, who haven’t yet had a COVID vaccine. The study is sponsored by Valneva Austria GmbH. The major eligibility criteria are as follows:
  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Generally healthy
  • Not already received or have booked to receive a vaccination intended to prevent COVID-19
If you have received an approved vaccine as part of the national rollout then you will NOT be eligible to participate in this trial. If you have been offered the vaccine but was unable to take it or have not yet been offered an approved vaccine then we encourage you to continue on to our pre-screening programme below. If you take part in this study, and are under 30 years of age you will be assigned to receive the VLA2001 vaccine.

If you are 30 years of age and over, you will be randomly assigned to receive either the investigational vaccine or the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is currently being administered throughout the UK as part of the national vaccine roll out. There is a two in three chance you will receive the investigational vaccine and a one in three chance you will receive the AstraZeneca vaccine.

There will be no cost to you, and you will be reimbursed for your time and inconvenience.

There will be a screening visit, two vaccination visits four weeks apart, and up to five further visits to attend. Study related activities will include physical examinations, COVID-19 testing and blood samples. In total, your participation is required for about 13 months.

Find out if you qualify by visiting our pre-screening website at http://www.ukcovid19study.com/nihr. This service is provided by Pharm-Olam, a commercial clinical trial company.

You may be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs during your participation. Please note that travel to research or other healthcare appointments is considered essential travel at this time of extra COVID restrictions, and that your appointment will take place in a COVID-safe environment.

This study is being run with the support of the NHS and the National Institute for Health Research, working in partnership with Valneva Austria GmbH, Pharm-Olam and Panthera.

As a COVID-19 vaccine has been approved and roll out has started in the UK during the course of this study, we have put in place a process to make sure people on this trial are not disadvantaged. It is important to note that we will ideally find several vaccines to protect the whole population. Your participation in this study is still very much needed. More information can be found at www.bepartofresearch.org.uk.

As a registered volunteer with the NHS COVID-19 vaccine research registry, you may have received a request to join this or another vaccine study before, and we may send you further invitations. If you haven't already applied through this link, we are still looking for volunteers like you. However, you cannot take part (meaning to receive a trial vaccine) in more than one vaccine study.

All under-40s are to be offered an alternative to the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine as a precaution.”

Will this mean a delay in the rollout? Will we have any use for the AZ vaccine supplies now apart from the second doses due?

EDIT JVT has just said he doesn’t expect this change the speed of the rollout at all.

I'm really keen to know this as well. I'm in my mid-30s and genuinely worried that come mid-May I'll still have no idea when I'll get the jab.

Astra Zeneca might have had a niche in serving areas or populations with logistical challenges - but soon Novavax comes online and I think it has the same transport requirements.

It might also be made an explicit option for people who want an immediate dose.

I imagine it'll be stockpiled until the UK adult population is covered, and then sold off.

Some data on deaths from the ONS today, reported by BBC:

Covid responsible for 97% of 2020 excess deaths

The number of deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020 was 14.3% above the average for the previous five years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) says.

A total of 607,922 deaths were registered, compared with an average of 532,077 in 2015-19.

This means there were 75,845 extra deaths, or "excess deaths" - with the ONS saying Covid-19 is responsible for 97% of these.
97% of the excess deaths is 73,569. Using the governments official measure of deaths, the cumulative total on December 31st was 67,612 (for England & Wales).

I’d hope the surplus AZ would be donated rather than sold off. But yes I think it’s time is largely done after June. Will be interesting to see what happens with the Janssen/JnJ one shot that is on order.

I was thinking the same thing. Only once Novavax has been approved, under 40s will be invited for the vaccination
