This was taken at Bowes Hotel, Bardon Mill near Hexham yesterday. The effect somewhat dented by a similar failure to wear a t-shirt.

After 70 or so cases have just been detected in South London, and I think they had already found 500 or so nationwide now, how long before the SA variant derails the route to “no rules”? If the AZ vaccine is 10% effective against it as reported (or anything very low), surely this thing will
spread like wildfire when the rules come off?

Well the reality is a bit more nuanced:

A small study of 2,000 people in South Africa has shown that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine offers minimal protection against mild cases of the South African variant, but the vaccine is still likely to reduce severe cases and deaths from the South African strain. The study, which was based people of an average age of 31, shows that protection may be as low as 10%. The research wasn’t able to determine whether it protects against serious illness or hospitalisation, because this group of people were at low risk of serious illness. Other research suggests that the vaccine is still likely to reduce severe cases and deaths from the South African strain. More research is needed in this area.

Anyway, yesterday was actually a very good day. Got some serious cycling in, the pubs being open meant that the shoals of Boris Bikers have disappeared, visited a bookstore (first since November, yay!) and bumped into an old friend at Coal Drops Yard.

It was great to see people out and about, kids playing in the piazza and the beautiful photos from the Silk Road from the Aga Khan exibit too (they've even got photos from Murghab, TJ, my favourite village in the Pamirs!). I, too, jumped on the pint outside bandwagon with a friend and, lo an behold, unexpectedly got a job offer that is seriously cool.

So, all in all, can't complain! Hope it's the last time ever we've got to go through this.

The missus scored me a jab in Crawley next weekend. I am in the 45-50 age cohort. Very pleased with this.

seeing the US pause johnson & johnson for the same clotting issue as astra zeneca is now a bit concerning with regards to the US continuing success for a potential green corridor.

The issue is even bigger than that. J&J was meant to be our saving grace for under 30s with AZ banned for that group now so this could have a major impact on our programme.

I've also engineered some filtering in my news feed. Anything coming from BoJo, the Hankiebot, The Rt Hon and Priti is automatically filtered out. That'll do wonders!

agree but at least the gov also has what--60MM doses of novovax on order? but i dont recall hearing that was something that was expected anytime soon to hit the under 30s by July.

(or if it has similar technology to az or j/j if that is having an impact of the clotting -- so obviously a big if.)

edit: oh i just read that due to sourcing bags the novovax has been delayed to Q3 to be at full production here and it is 2 doses. :(

Novavax’s NVX-CoV2373 vaccine has a different technology to Moderna + Pfizer (mRNA) as well as AZ + Janssen J&J (adenovirus). Novavax is a protein sub-unit vaccine, that uses synethetic nanoparticles that mimic the spike protein and kid the body into launching an immune response. It needs two doses/ I doubt the global shortage of plastic growbags will affect roll out too much, it's the MHRA approval, expected any day now, which is the next hurdle. July still seems ok, I suspect.

Scotland is bringing forward intra-Scotland travel to this Friday, with rUK travel expected 26 April.

FM says international travel must wait

Here is her full statement on travelling overseas:

“International travel remains a significant risk, particularly given the acceleration of spread that we’re seeing in many other parts of the world and given the possibility, indeed the reality of new variants and a risk of the virus and new variants being imported into Scotland.

“We will not keep these restrictions in place for longer than necessary, but it is important right now to protect our progress here that we don’t make the mistakes that we perhaps as we came out of lockdown last time and opened up international travel too quickly, and then compromise and jeopardise the progress that we have made.

“I know that’s not easy, and often when we talk about international travel we’ll talk about holidays, but I am very well aware that for many people international travel is about seeing families.”
and

FM said she hoped that travel restrictions outwith the UK could be agreed ‘on a four nations basis.’

‘It may well be the case that we do have to endure restrictions on international travel for a bit longer as the price we pay for much greater normality here in Scotland.’

First sign of cost of PCR tests coming down? I think they were partnered with TUI last year but hopefully more airlines will team up with them.

Correct but this improves choice further and will help put pressure on prices to hopefully drive them down, just need to get the price of the day 2 & day 8 tests down too.

Sharing for those who can/might be interested. From a local West London forum, ChiswickW4:

If you are over 40 and have not yet had your jab, then you can turn up today (Tuesday 13th) at Fountains Leisure Centre and get a jab without an appointment (the reason is that they are very quiet). Today only - tomorrow (Wednesday) they have 450 appointments
