Remember BER opening was postponed because they failed the fire inspection two weeks before the opening date. That bought out the total discordination between the various contractors who just build what their were told to. Looking at the pictures that is exactly what is happening here too. But then German fire inspectors were rather strict because of a recent fire in DUS a few years before. In this case they will probably issue a tempoary certificate with a corrective action list

I don't know how correct is this: but, I've heard some rumors from the ex-TAV staff who are at INA/IGA now, that the fire alarm system at AHL's international terminal (the first phase that became operational in Jan 2000; BOTS by TAV) also suffered a number of mishaps inc. the fire alarm system. But it was operational on time and the various mishaps were corrected as time went by!

Ok, thanks Hflr, so no metro or rail link for at least a year. It seems inconceivable that an airport of this size could operate effectively without such a link.
Does anyone know of any other airport of similar size (60 mill pax per year) that operates successfully without a rail link of any type ?

The tender for the Bus Transportation (Luggage Carrying Service) took place today and it was won by a consortium comprising of Altur-Havaş & Free Turizm companies. Actually only two parties bidded!... Altur is known as a very pro-AKP company and they have a good share of private in-city transportation of major companies' staff, in major towns of Turkey. Havaş used to be the transport company that handled the pax & luggage carrying to IST (tge current AHL) & SAW Airports until they were kicked out by the Istanbul Municipality which started the Havatas Services (the buses are known as Havabus). They also have a 50% in Turkish Ground Services (a JV with Turkish Airlines) and will also operate at INA. Altur was not qualified as a standalone company so they were kind of forced for this "buddy-buddy" business with Havaş! Strange to see that Istanbul Municipality didn't get involved saat all!
See the link in Turkish: Yeni havaliman? ula??m ihalesini kazanan belli oldu!

I have family members who are crew with TK and they are being told the new new IST airport will open as planned on the 29/10. I passed through old IST on Friday and there is documentation airside confirming this and TK's move shortly after. However, said family members fully expect a quiet postponement sometime this month. The situation at the moment, they feel, is it would be impossible to get all the necessary staff to the airport, let alone the passengers, because of non-existant infrastructure. They have no information on whether the actual airport will be finished. But, they also said it is not beyond the realms of possibility that someone, somewhere will make the political decision to open. Those who live in Turkey will know what they mean by this, positions of influence in Turkey are given because of political affiliation rather than an ability to do the job.
If it does open chaos is expected. It will also have a massive impact on SAW, lots of domestic travellers will switch to there, along with international traffic with Istanbul as the final destination leaving IST as a transfer point.

The sensible thing is a smooth and slow transition. All foreign airlines (except for the Star Alliance ones, due to the latter's connection with TK) can be moved to INA, as pioneers (and guinea pigs). These have minimum (though not zero) domestic connections and will not need the presence of the Domestic Wing of the Terminal.
The traffic at INA will be at minimum, though there will be a rather big burden (and a bit of a risk) for the ATCs. Unfortunately the airspace connected to the runways at INA and one runway (mostly used for departures) at AHL do intersect/collide. But it's not an impossible management. In the meanwhile the orientation at INA can be more rationalised/approved.
As a second step, the two AHL based smaller players can be relocated at INA (namely AtlasGlobal & OnurAir), and the Domestic Pier can be opened.
Finally, Turkish Airlines (and Star Alliance member airlines) can be relocated by the time almost everything has settled down (say at the beginning of S19 timetable, which is late March 2019). The only risk there is the possibility of having bad winter weather at the time of this transition.
We'll all have to wait and see!...@:-)
