Istanbul New Airport

Since it is planned to open this year (well we all know how airport projects go...) maybe it is time for new dedicated thread for the "Istanbul New Airport". In the first phase the airport will have a capacity of 90 million pax/annually, with full operation (circa 2030) it is expected to expand to 200 million. The airport terminal will be 1.4 million m2 , with 143 passenger boarding bridges, 13 check-in islands, 468 counters, 114 self check-in, 228 passport control points.

The inauguration of the airport is planned to take place on 29 October 2018 (with the start of the winter timetable) with TK obviously being the main customer.

Note to self: avoid flying via IST in October & November 2018. Judging by how 'smoothly' ICN. HkG, LHR T5 openings took place, it will be mess...

Check in staff this week said the moved was due in October. Hope it will reduce delays but will cost significantly more to get from the city. Should boost property prices in the surrounding area by a huge amount.

How will it be connected to the city? What will be the public transportation options?

At a minimum, they will surely from opening have the airport bus from Taksim for very cheap like they currently do to IST and SAW! So the basic cost should really not be different, unless you really have to take a cab. The roads look to be ready in time for the opening, not sure about the Metro links.

No metro links in time for opening, but they are planned/being built. You are right there should be buses, not just from Taksim but also from other points like the main ferry terminals.

The latest, dislocated, Taksim terminus is a bit of a mess. Are there plans for dedicated facility? Travelling from Sisli I usually stay on the metro and change at Yenikapi for the airport. It can be faster than the road trip, even with the clunky line change. And a whole lot cheaper

No metro. Presumably few if any hotels near the airport on opening. Sounds like a disaster, especially considering how TK gives away the hotel night to attract connecting traffic.

But I bet new hotels will sprout like mushrooms when developers get the message ...

LOL. Because hotels are always on time and on budget! And Istanbul hotel rates are high enough to justify major investments.

I get your point, but somehow struggle to imagine it happening quickly in Istanbul. Happy to be proved wrong though as otherwise the new airport will be a nightmare.

Well, yes - but those are Istanbul hotels: I think airport hotels play a different game, especially where an airport is as isolated as this one will be.

The promotional video above shows the location of the CIP lounge, as well as a hotel with 446 rooms inside the main terminal of the new airport.

If the plans don’t get changed, the lounge at the new airport will have it’s very own drive-up entrance on the right before you come up to the main terminal entrances.

Looks exciting, Im looking forward to it all.

I am not a big fan of airports far away from the related city.
What will happen with the current one?
