My wife is a PR currently and will be a citizen sometime in August (hopefully). I understand that she can apply, but if she applies right now, she will be applying as a PR and before we can schedule an interview, she might become a citizen. I seem to remember from my own GE application that you cannot change anything on your application once you validate and submit.
Why is there a hurry to apply right now? Because she has an Amex Plat and her annual fee is up in late July and we are planning to cancel the card, but want to pay the $100 fee with the plat before we cancel. Is there any way to pay upfront and than complete the GE application at a later date? Any suggestions? |
I've been reading all the threads here and online materials about GOES but I'm still not 100% certain.
I've applied for GOES yesterday as I will be doing some international travel (outside of US/CA) for the first time next year. However, my first international flight (a short one) will be from EWR-YUL this year. I know GOES isn't NEXUS (and that I wouldn't have full GOES benefit when I travel to Canada) but I've heard reports that I would be able to use the faster "CREW" line to get back to the United States. Is this true? Thanks for clearing things up! |

To answer your question, GlobalEntry is only useful to people travelling from Canada to the US if they travel from an airport in Canada that does not have US Customs preclearance, flying to an airport that has GE facilities. (My home airport, YQR, is an example. I can use the GE feature of my NEXUS subscription flying YQR-ORD or YQR-LAS, but not YQR-PHX, YQR-DEN or YQR-MSP since the latter three airports don't have GE. [I could be wrong about PHX but you get my point.] If you travelled from YVR, YEG, YYC, YWG, YYZ, YUL, YQB or YHZ to the US, you go through US Customs preclearance at the Canadian airport so to fast track, you need NEXUS, not GE. |

GOES is the online registration system that lets you apply for NEXUS, GlobalEntry and SENTRI. :)

It sounds like he just got to skip the line though (although I'm not even sure how customs work as I've never done it except via land). I was wondering if this is true for all pre-clearance airports. |

Just a datapoint to those who have been subjected to questioning while using GE. I went through SFO yesterday. I printed out my receipt and as I was walking pass the nearest kiosk, the CBP agent, who was processing a passenger, asked me to show my receipt. I waved it to him, standing about 10 feet away, and he said thank you and told me to go ahead. He didn't examine my passport or receipt. I showed my receipt at the exit of the Immigration hall and proceeded to wait for my luggage. When I exited the Customs hall, the agent just took my receipt and said welcome back and that was it. So if there was a "trend" towards asking questions and examining passports, it's not evident at SFO which has not changed from when the machines were installed there.

Update to Global Entry App Still in Pending Review
I just thought I owed everyone an update. As I have often read on these forums...people posted inquiries to the thread asking why their application for GE was taking so long...and then got approved the next day....well, that is exactly what ended up happening to my wife and me. I posted on Monday night saying it had been 4 weeks and I got notified of conditional approval on Tuesday afternoon for both of us. Evidently the speeding tickets did not matter too much. I guess posting to this forum seems to be the magic catalyst that causes your conditional approval to arrive!!

As a GE member at YYZ, I took the Nexus line and got called for the booth bypassing the major part of the line (I did have to wait in the line outside the glassed area though)

This doesn't seem to be official - but it will be interesting to see if this continues. If so, it will be terrific for non-NEXUS GE holders.

Well, it did NOT say to omit minor traffic violations 4 weeks ago! It stated "have you ever plead guilty to or been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony in the US or any other country" (might not be an exact quote)...and then it said "this includes misdemeanor traffic violations". In MS, speeding is a misdemeanor. I assume paying the ticket without going to court is the same as pleading guilty. I explained in the explanation that I only answered yes to the question because of minor traffic violations such as speeding or running a stop sign and have never plead guilty or been convicted of any offense greater than this MINOR traffic violation. I was very reluctant to answer yes to this question, but the instructions stated that if any ommission occured the application would be denied and I would have to start over and pay again. If they intended to not include speeding, etc., it was very poorly worded. In hindsight, I would answer NO to this question. I have a friend that works for Customs and Border Protection (he has no involvement in the area of GE and didn't even know what the program was...and cannot assist me)...I asked him after the fact and he specualted that I should have answered NO. I am afraid now that by simply checking "YES" on the application, my app has been flagged for more extensive review and no telling when it will finally be approved!
I think you gave the right response, and if it slows it down a couple of weeks so be it. |
I believe this answers a few questions and more than a few complaints
Global Entry Members In Possession of a Global Entry Card May Utilize NEXUS and SENTRI Lanes Coming Into The United States. http://www.globalentry.gov/howtoapply.html (07/12/2011) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin issuing Global Entry radio frequency identification (RFID) cards on July 12, 2011 to qualified U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) and Mexican citizens (not already in possession of a SENTRI card) who are approved for membership in Global Entry. There is no additional cost for the RFID card as it will be included in the application fee. Global Entry members who were approved for the program prior to July 12, 2011 and wish to obtain a RFID card may request one via their Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) account for a $15 fee. Global Entry cards are Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative compliant documents for land and sea travel. Additionally, these cards will be valid for use at the SENTRI and NEXUS lanes coming into the United States. However, Global Entry cards will not be valid for entry into Canada via the NEXUS lanes and kiosks; and members must use a passport or U.S. LPR card at the Global Entry kiosks. Please note that as of the above date, members can use any CBP issued Trusted Traveler Program card when traveling inbound into the United States via the SENTRI or NEXUS lanes. Any Global Entry member who wishes to drive their vehicle in the SENTRI lane must register their vehicle and have a 7-point inspection conducted at a SENTRI Enrollment Center. For more information on locations of SENTRI Enrollment Centers as well program requirements, please go to www.sentri.gov. |

I don't see a reason to pay the $15, I can use the lane and just wait for the next CBP Officer to free up. The machine would be a little faster, but I haven't had a problem yet with using the lane. As for the driving thing, interesting that your car has to be inspected first ... what happens if its just a rental? I guess I won't be using the quick lane on the road border crossings. |
All my trips when I've returned from European travel have been via aa T8(JFK). After I receive my slip from the GE terminal I head to the customs lines (I only have carry-on), and even when several flights have arrived these lines are short and move fast. I noticed one of the pilots on my flight also used GE, but he headed to a different area (crew lines?)--could I also have used that line (in the event the regular lines were long and/or moving slowly)?

TSA takes first steps toward 'trusted travel' program
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/07/14...el=%27nofollow
GE just keeps getting better. I just received an email from DL announcing the program and I tried to find an official citation on TSA.gov, but there's nothing, not even in the 'media room'. However, there are a handful of news pieces that were posted recently. It makes perfect sense to include GE, Sentri, and Nexus participants in a trial program. I suspect the queues for GE clearance will get longer in light of this news. |
