Thanks... looks like when she went online there was only a link to replace a lost/stolen RFID card, so I guess she'll get one in the mail like you. The link to enroll in an additional trusted traveler program actually sends you through a NEXUS enrollment, after which they prompt you for a $50 payment.

My card request is showing pending review since I submitted last week. Hoping it won't be a 4 week process as well.

Global Entry Card and domestic security screening

I just went through the process online to request a Global Entry Card. I've been a member of Global Entry for about 4 months and I read about the card this morning so I signed up. I'd heard on the news that the TSA would be testing out a "Trusted Traveler" program and read that Global Entry members would be included. I guessed that a physical card would be required to get entrance to the new security lanes, so I wanted a card!

Be aware that you have to list all of your travel within the last 5 years again and any past addresses that you've lived at within the last 5 years. That threw me at first since I'd traveled A LOT in the last 5 years and I didn't want to inadvertently miss a country and somehow flag my account so I went to my TripIt account and reviewed trip by trip to make sure I had the correct countries visited. It cost me $15.

Now my account shows below (without ID numbers of course):

Read the quote above ... It's for inbound US Nexus machine privileges (from Canada)

I think it will also be used for stateside TSA trusted traveler lines.

Since our Global Entry status is tied to our passports and we generally don't use our passports to travel within the US, I figure the new RFID chipped Global Entry Card will be how the TSA will gain access to our membership info so we'll be able to use the new lines coming for the trusted traveler program. If not I'll have $15 plastic card to add to the other 25 I don't carry with me. :)

Knowing the sh@t TSA regularly pulls, I expect the latter more likely than the former

Global Entry Members In Possession of a Global Entry Card May Utilize NEXUS and SENTRI Lanes Coming Into The United States.
http://www.globalentry.gov/howtoapply.html

(07/12/2011) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin issuing Global Entry radio frequency identification (RFID) cards on July 12, 2011 to qualified U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) and Mexican citizens (not already in possession of a SENTRI card) who are approved for membership in Global Entry. There is no additional cost for the RFID card as it will be included in the application fee. Global Entry members who were approved for the program prior to July 12, 2011 and wish to obtain a RFID card may request one via their Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) account for a $15 fee.

Global Entry cards are Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative compliant documents for land and sea travel. Additionally, these cards will be valid for use at the SENTRI and NEXUS lanes coming into the United States. However, Global Entry cards will not be valid for entry into Canada via the NEXUS lanes and kiosks; and members must use a passport or U.S. LPR card at the Global Entry kiosks. Please note that as of the above date, members can use any CBP issued Trusted Traveler Program card when traveling inbound into the United States via the SENTRI or NEXUS lanes.

Any Global Entry member who wishes to drive their vehicle in the SENTRI lane must register their vehicle and have a 7-point inspection conducted at a SENTRI Enrollment Center. For more information on locations of SENTRI Enrollment Centers as well program requirements, please go to www.sentri.gov.

I've never used NEXUS before. I just have GE. I understand that there's NEXUS at airports and NEXUS at land crossings. How does each work?

I assume at land crossings you drive up to a window or something? Is there a kiosk? Is there a "How to use the kiosk" PDF like the GE kiosk's?

Also, if you're at a land crossing with NEXUS, does everyone in the car have to have NEXUS?

I just filled out the form online to get my GE RFID card. Going to YYZ (via BUF) in a few weeks with a friend. Hopefully it gets here by then.

Only way to use it for entry into Canada is to go through the Nexus process, on it's own GE is useless.

For land crossing back to the US, see the blurb above ... If driving, you need to have the card pre-checked to use the fast lane.

Any idea how one gets the GE card "pre-checked" prior to using the fast lane?

You cannot use NEXUS by virtue of being a Global Entry member. In order to use Nexus, you must apply and be interviewed by the Canadian Border agency, in addition to the US interview.

Land crossing - everyone in the car must be a NEXUS member. There is not a kiosk but a RF reader that scans all the cards. You stick it out of the window. Then you proceed to the officer for additional questioning.

I haven't crossed at the airport but you have to get an Iris scan to use NEXUS.

Now that is the way it was, but Nexus is now an option as GE if you get the card, you can use the machine when entering the US. The Canada entry is not impacted, and you need to go through the normal line. With GE, you can use the line to get to an agent if you don't have the card.

Warreng24, that was car not card I believe that gets checked ... The iPad likes to makes changes when I am not paying attention

It's been a couple years since I signed up for GE and logged into GOES. I'm trying to sign up for the $15 RFID card. Now it's asking me to update my security questions and update my password. Problem is the next screen keeps popping up a system error. Been trying for 4 days. No answer from the DHS support email. Anybody else having this trouble?

Something must be up with your account of PC. I just signed in, changed my password and registered for the card. Took about 5min.

Hi, how did you request the card? I'm looking at my GOES account and do not see any link to request a GE card. I've been a member since the program began.

Same here, although it took me 10 minutes.... Simple procedure. GE since mid-2008.

Could you please let us know what link you followed in GOES to request the GE card? I have been looking around in my GOES account and do not see anything that allows me to request a card. I do think it is interesting that now, under Program Memberships, it just says "Trusted Traveler Program," indicating that my multiple memberships (NEXUS and GE) have been merged or are merging into one TTP.

Here's a related question: are you both NEXUS and GE? I am...so maybe they won't allow combined NEXUS/GE members to request a GE card for the time being? Technically, I suppose the NEXUS card is a more "powerful" card than the GE card, because NEXUS card does everything a GE card does and ALSO shows proof of ability to enter Canada via airport kiosks (iris scanning kiosks), though you need to have your passport to do so.

By contrast, a GE card is....hmm.... actually, how is it different from a NEXUS card?

Come to think of it, are there really any differences between what a GE or NEXUS card by itself allows you to do? As of recently, both cards qualify as WHTI-compliant documents that allow land/sea travel among USA/Canada/Mexico/Caribbean/Bermuda/Bahamas, but neither card BY ITSELF allows air travel. When traveling by air, GE requires you to insert the MRZ on your passport into the CBP kiosks, and NEXUS requires you to be carrying your passport when you enter Canada via the airport (iris) kiosks.

Long term, maybe CBP and CBSA are thinking of streamlining NEXUS/GE/SENTRI and making just ONE program called "Trusted Traveler" with ONE type of card..... This might be the first step.

If you already have a NEXUS card there's no reason why you would need a GE card.
