Overall, I was off the plane, and to the domestic checkpoint in less than 10 minutes ^

FriendlySkies-Mom was also on the trip, and she had to use the general line. She mentioned that the officer processing was a bit rude when trying to figure out why somebody would only go to SYD for two days, and then started asking things such as the name of the hospital she was born at, etc.. Glad that I was able to avoid that! If I did not have GE, I wonder what they would say to me when I return from my one-night trip to LHR..

Did mine yesterday from PEK. In and out, nice spiffy ticket printed and no CBP interview.

Only with is were a free svc.

I have taken my family through many times. I "blur" the passport so that I have to go to the front of the line - and take them with me. Have never been questioned about it.

Thanks to all who shared their experience with the process. It was very helpful, so I thought I would add my experience to the mix.

Applied on line and had conditional approval in 3 days. Scheduled the interview during a planned trip layover and had no problem scheduling...plenty of available times about 2 weeks out.

Interview lasted about 15 minutes. Agent was very polite and was absolutely on point. Asked questions about personal history (verifying identity, I assume) travel history (pretty basic. 4 countries so far, with multiple visits to each, all vacation, no business trips), any criminal / immigration problems (none), drug use (none), etc.

After the interview, was told I was approved on-the-spot. A short (5 minute or so) walk through on a training kiosk to familiarize with the operation. Seems very easy to use.

I was told the process when receiving an X on the receipt was to stand to the side of the machine, make eye contact with the nearest CBP agent and hop to the front of the line when he completes the current entry interview. Suggested holding the X'd receipt in plain view so the agent would understand what I was signaling for....

For those asking about the X, I was told it could occur due to random selection or due to something I input into the machine during the process...most likely an agriculture issue. I was told several times that the X did not mean I was in trouble :) I did not experience the warnings that being "caught" in bringing in something not permitted or other actions would have me banned from the program, etc. Perhaps due to the interview the agent was convinced I was a rule-follower already :D
Other than an occasional T-shirt, I don't bring anything back from overseas anyway....

I think that is all the important stuff. I concur with the vast majority on this thread that the enrollment process was great. Relevant questions with a personable agent. Easy to understand the process. Easy to schedule appointment. Even the directions to the office supplied after scheduling the interview were spot-on.

I eagerly await my first opportunity to put it to use....

I used GE for the first time last week on my way back from SYD when I landed in SFO. It was great, and I was into baggage claim within 10 minutes of the plane's door opening.

My bag wasn't tagged priority, and I ended up waiting until after some of the coach passengers that had been seated around me, and didn't use GE, had claimed their bags and exited Customs before I was able to do the same.

Still a good thing, but it would have been awesome if I only had carry on, or had my bag been one of the first to come out.

I wondered about that when I first applied for GE, but I suspect that the $100 charge is going to be the show stopper for the VAST majority of "occasional" Int'l travelers.
What I DO suspect you may see, however, is a large number of flight crews doing it down the road as an alternative to the flight crew line when a bank of Int'l arrivals hits at one time.
Just my thoughts. ;)

I have seen an increase in the number of Flight Crews using GE over the last few months...

Used GE yesterday in SFO. Regular immigration lines were already packed when our flight arrived.

From the time our plane docked, I was off the plane, through immigration/customs and back through security for a connecting flight in 25 minutes end-to-end. Without GE it was probably another 45-60 minutes waiting in those packed immigration lines. In this case, GE allowed me to get on an earlier connecting flight, saving me a three-hour airport wait.

Totally worth the fee and hassle of the interview!

Same here... especially pilots.

How long on the approval process normally for NEXUS?

I applied last Sunday, it's now Saturday (six days later) and I'm still seeing INITIAL ENROLLMENT PENDING REVIEW.

I have a trip to Calgary and Vancouver in a few weeks, am hoping to have the card by then.

Good to know--how many kids?

It's great, but has one flaw. Recently at IAD I spent 30 seconds at the GE terminal and 30 seconds to wait for the CBP agent at customs. But I had to wait nearly 30 minutes for my bags to appear in between. Well, at least I could read a magazine in one place rather than shuffling forward.

I had an amazing experience at IAD the other day, with a very short connection:
  • 4:07 Deplaned from NRT
  • 4:10 Processed immigration at GE kiosk
  • 4:11 Inside baggage claim
  • 4:21 UA barfed my bag out of the wall onto the belt
  • 4:22 Through customs with a "welcome home"
  • 4:23 Rechecked bag with UA
  • 4:24 Entered F line for TSA
  • 4:30 Clear of security
  • 4:31 Into terminal near C3, started walking real fast
  • 4:41 Arrived D4 for my connecting flight
  • 4:47 Door closed for the scheduled 4:51 departure
And someway, somehow, my rechecked bag made it to the connecting flight too. GE, your rock: The Immigration line even for US Citizens was very long, so it's highly unlikely I would have made it without GE.

2nd global entry experience

My first was in Sept coming back to SFO from NRT - was awesome.

My second was last Friday, back to LAX from LHR on AA. First time I didn't clear into C/J so was in exit row meaning 1/3rd of the place got off in front of me, plus another big plane got in just before us. The line was giant.

There are only two kiosks there and there were two people using them and one person waiting!!! He and I joked about the program getting too popular. The flight attendant using one of the machines was done quickly and left after waving and making some joke to others waiting in crew line. Then I figured out why there was a wait - the other kiosk has a guy who was completely unable to enter his flight -something about the UI on that screen was confusing him. I "helped" him from a distance (by pointing out he was not selecting a flight before trying to go to the next screen) and eventually he figured it out. Still the whole thing took 2-3 minutes at most.

The coolest thing is when the purser was walking through the cabin with customs forms and I said "I'm good" she said "you already have one or are you Global Entry?". Yay! I've heard of people being told that everyone must fill out one - nice to see crews now know about the program.

In fact she worried me by continuing down the aisle saying "everyone needs to have one of these forms unless you have Global Entry". Hey, lady, keep it down, I don't want to wait in line at kiosks (at least till they get more of them)

There is a separate NEXUS thread, but I recall mine taking about two weeks. Mr 999 had about the same wait. Now getting an appointment at some of the Canadian airports quickly - that can be a challenge.

GE was not worth it yesterday at LAX

Arrived from SYD yesterday at LAX.

Did the kiosk, no problems.

Go to customs and present my receipt (which had no X).

The CBP drone:

- asked for a passport (he got my green card instead; guy can't read a receipt, apparently)
- if I had food
- if I bought anything
- asked my why I was in Australia
- asked me who I worked for
- asked me what I did for a living

Pity that the CBP is ruining GE. Until there is a fully automated process that includes customs, GE will be useless.
