Yes, its too bad they don't nix the paper form. Wonder though, if its less a technological issue, as it is the specifics of Canadian law requiring "paper" declaration (I have no idea - just speculating).

The APC kiosk's for Canada require the form as well. Haven't used the US ones, but I believe those don't require paper declaration cards either - like GE, they just print a receipt.

I just received my "Conditionally Approved" notification. In the letter I am "now invited to visit a NEXUS enrollment center for an interview". The letter also states "You are not authorized to use the NEXUS lanes or NEXUS Air Kiosks until you receive your NEXUS card".

I have had a valid Nexus card since 2009 which expires in December 2014. Does the statement in the letter mean I cannot use the Nexus lane when I go to my interview? The last thing I want to do is violate some technical requirement of the program and lose my Nexus privileges. I would be driving to an enrollment center in Canada from the US.

Can anyone elaborate on how I should handle this situation?

I'm just fingers with an opinion but the letter says you are not authorized to use the NEXUS lanes UNTIL you have the card. I would say that as you DO have a NEXUS card, you ARE authorized to use the NEXUS lanes. The letter does not say until you receive a NEW card. That's my amateur hair-splitting read.

Others may post the same or the opposite opinion here. End of the day, you have to decide for yourself. If you remain worried there may be issues with the enforcement, you should call the office and hope that a human will answer. (Even so, take down their name or ID, because the officer at the border may still have the opposite position on it. There seem to be so many different interpretations by different personnel.)

The only guaranteed no-hassle way is to cross as non-NEXUS and if you're lucky, you'll be going at a low-traffic time of day and the non-NEXUS lanes will be fast anyway. This may all be moot if you can't get an interview before December, in which case you're non-NEXUS at that time.

Thank you for your opinion. I don't think it would take that long to get through customs at a regular lane but it would take longer than going through the Nexus lane. Coming back to the US would take significantly more time than the Nexus lane. When I clicked the "Schedule Appointment" button it does not look like it would a problem getting an appointment before my current card expires. I was hoping an "official" answer to this question was written down somewhere.

Not to mention the text in the conditional approval is likely for new applicants and not really targeted at renewals.

Either think about it logically, with the addition of other people's opinions/experiences and continue to use it, or don't. The fact remains, your current card is still valid. Why wouldn't you be able to use it?

I'm not aware of anywhere that it's written one way or the other, and one could argue it if it ever caused an issue.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever successfully changed their last name on their NEXUS card. I recently got married and it's been months trying to go through hoops with CBP and CBSA. Some people at CBSA have suggested that I probably should just re-apply but they're not sure how that will affect things.

Odd how some CATSA agents are accepting people who have GE but not NEXUS for fast entry through security. Those people have never been vetted/interviewed by Canadian authorities.

Odder still is how CATSA isn't accepting CANPASS members, who *have* been vetted by Canadian authorities, for priority security screening.

Effectively CATSA's requirement for access to the priority security lineup at Canadian airports is having been approved by the U.S. CBP as a trusted traveler. Approval by CBSA counts for nothing. :td:

It looks like a Nexus kiosk except there's this part at waist-level where you enter your card (face up), in a similar style to GE machines. It didn't seem to give any indication it knew my card was there, so I moved it around a bit until it asked me to look into the mirrors. Those seem to be positioned quite a bit lower than I remember, but they may have been adjustable.

All in all, though, I'm not a fan, since it means I now have the added step of reaching into my carry on for the card, taking it out of the sleeve, putting it in, putting it back in the sleeve, and putting it back in my carry on. Only a few seconds of work, but still annoying :p

I will make it my routine to have my card out while I'm waiting to disembark the aircraft, seeing as the paper form is still required anything. If I have to hold it, I might as well hold my NEXUS card!

Does anybody know if I need to bring a print out of the letter to my appointment or if showing it on my phone will suffice?

I brought my letter to the interview. Neither the American nor Canadian asked to see it.

And the letter specifically lists a printout of the letter as part of the required documentation to be brought to the interview.

I try to live by this golden rule: I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

P.S. I wasn't asked for the letter at either my GE (PHL) or NEXUS (Niagara) interviews.

That's a good rule. Bring also your birth certificate. My letter said nothing about needing it but the CBP agent who approved me insisted I produce it before I was approved. I had mine with me buy my wife and kids didn't; I had to go home for theirs and come back (same day, no second appointment needed).
