I think that the point is that at land borders you used to be able to make a written declaration by dropping a card in a box and not make a verbal declaration. Now, you can do a verbal declaration alone or if you do a written one, you have to restate what was on the card to an officer. They always are supposed to ask what you have to declare.

I have my wife's and mine appointment scheduled for September. There's a a appointment sooner to a location closer to us. Can I book one of ours and we both show up together?
I doesn't show how many spots open. |
It only shows the first appointment available when you first go to the "schedule (or reschedule) appointments" page, but when you click the date, you will see if one or more additional appointments are open on the same day.
You can also switch to week or month view. In whatever view, the time periods with availability are shown in different shading than unavailable time periods. If you get two appointments on the same day, they don't need to be consecutive. They see families consecutively (or together) as long as they had appointments on the same day. BUT YOU MUST EACH HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. When I was looking for a cancellation to move up the appointment for my daughter, there was a block of five spots for the next day. A whole family was unavailable on a Saturday of a long weekend, making five other people happy. So don't despair - cancellations come in groups as well as individuals. Keep looking if this one only has one spot. |
GOES email notification app. status change
I did not realize that I would receive notification of change of status of my renewal, I had been checking my account every few days. However, I did receive an email this morning which was nice.
For those in the renewal process: Renewal application transmitted June 8th. Renewal approved August 10th (and notification of change in application transmitted same). No interview required. And that was with some changes in my profile including change of province of residence, DL change along with that, and change of employment status from employed to retired. Nice. Letter states Global entry can be used immediately and Nexus once card received and activated, which is even not an issue since my current Nexus membership is good till October. Very smooth and efficient. |

This guy is a total jerk. He just sits in the booth until you say something. Then when you start off by saying "I have about $200 worth of stuff" he barks out "What is stuff and what do you mean about? Don't you know what the items are and what they cost?" He is the only person who has ever referred me for secondary and actually threatened to pull my card (BTW when the secondary person talked to me they just rolled their eyes and went through the motions). I know other people who have had him as well and make the same remarks. So, bottom line is YMMV. As I said, most officers are 98% a positive experience and guide the conversation but there are some bad apples out there.

What the US government says is only 50% of your issue.
Canada says "Please note that the use of the NEXUS card as proof of identification and to denote citizenship does not apply when entering Canada by air." < http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/faq-eng.html > |
Tossing in another "waiting time" data point - I applied (first time application) June 3, received conditional approval this morning Aug 10, so just about 10 weeks for conditional approval. An appointment opened up at YYZ for tomorrow, so waiting time from conditional approval to appointment ends up being about 26 hours and I get to take a scenic Sunday drive. :)

The airline requires a valid passport to get through their passport check since they have no way to read your NEXUS card's information. I saw a discussion of the point with someone who presented a NEXUS card at YTZ. They had their passport with them and had to show it. I've used my card at a NEXUS machine and when directed to secondary was required to present my passport. Sometimes NEXUS gets through without the passport but in reality, without a passport there could be a variety of battles you might lose.

Can one fly US/Canada with Nexus only, without passport? My passport is being glacially processed for an Indian visa, and I've been asked to do a day trip to the US (YOW-IAD-YOW). According to the info at the top of this thread, for air travel you need Nexus AND passport. According to this US government site, you need Nexus OR passport. Thanks!

The AC web site confirms this (and also confirmed by an email response on this question to me by AC)- that the nexus card can be used to either check-in or board the plane for either domestic or transborder flights.

right, it was only showing a 7:20pm opening for that day. i didn't want to reschedule mine to that day and time not knowing if i could do same for my wife for same date and time. That's why I was wondering if I booked mine for that time, and couldn't do same for wife, could we just go together anyway and would they see both of us?
Your choices (1) are to wait for two same-day openings and be 99% sure you will both be seen at the time of the first appointment, regardless of whether one appointment is at 9 am and the other at 7 pm, or (2) take your chances that you both go on the earlier date with just one slot, and one of you does not get the interview that day, and has to make a second trip on a later date. End of the day, the gamble is not a bad deal. You wait just as long for the second card as you would by leaving both appointments on the same day, but one of you gets their card sooner and could use it on your own travel in the mean time, the second person knows the drill ahead of their turn, and you're only out the cost of the second round trip, which obviously varies with where you live and where the interview is. Mine was at YYZ so the parking cost me $22 (half what the card did!) whereas my daughter's was in Ft Erie, so we had to drive half a day there and back but parking was free. If neither of you plans to travel alone, then the benefit of getting one card sooner is nil, but maybe you would be the rare beneficiary of someone having a good day. Bottom line: no sure thing, never promised, may have happened: your gamble. |

Can someone confirm that these are the only documents that I need to bring to my interview:
1. Passport 2. Driver's License 3. NEXUS Conditionally Approved Letter 4. Bank statement with current address (just in case) I only mentioned my passport and DL in the application. I've been reading about people having to bring their birth certificates, so I'm a bit confused. |
