You scan your eyes. You never swipe a card. But you still technically need the card with you. Coming into Canada, using NEXUS, I have never been asked for my NEXUS card. I have once been asked for my passport (YVR, by one of the roaming CBSA officers in baggage claim). Going into the USA with GE, I've never been explicitly asked for my NEXUS card, but I had it in hand when I saw the officer, and I handed it over with all the other documentation. He looked at it for a while, then handed it back. I don't know if he would have requested it had I not handed it over though.

I also seem to recall being told to have the card to use GE, but this official page says the card is not required.
It also addresses the lost/stolen issue. http://www.globalentry.gov/faq.html#f1

I thought I would post this US USDA page in relation to the declaration of "food" at GE.
Generally Allowed Food Items The following food items are generally allowed entry: blablabla - Foodstuffs such as bakery items, candy, and chocolate. blablabla Remember, you must declare all food and agricultural products, including those listed above, to a CBP agriculture specialist or officer when you arrive in the United States. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/travel/gen..._allowed.shtml Actually, going through security with my Smarties, my extra laptop batteries set something off, so they opened my bag to swab everything. It was very full, and I had 10 large boxes of Smarties on top. A few of them fell out onto the conveyor. The CATSA guy laughed really hard. |

And actually, speaking of cards.. I'm curious if everyone's photo looks are low quality as mine. I'm guessing it's not just limited to YYZ, but I find it kind of odd that they take all these precautions when accepting people into the program, yet the photo for your card is taken with probably a $15 webcam. You'd think with all the bio-metric data they collect they'd have some kind of decent camera to put a better picture of the cardholder.
My GE card on the other hand was quite professionally done. They used a fixed mounted camera much like they do for capturing photos during immigration. |
Nexus
Applied May 30th, received conditional approval August 5th.
Seems like they are quite backlogged. I got my appointment at YVR for August 23rd. It took some obsessive checking for cancellations. Looks like Vancouver areas offices are booking into December, or October at Blaine. If my appointment is on the 23rd, any chance I will have the card by the 30th when I am flying to the US? |

That said, don't know 100% for sure that one isn't required when GE is obtained though NEXUS. Would make sense that it isn't, but with the government, you just never know. It is also possible that when you report your NEXUS card as lost/stolen, they also suspend the membership completely, including GE benefits, until you finish whatever process is needed. I would think a call to the Nexus number on the website, or even to a US GE office and you will get a better answer. Vernonc - can you point to the place where it shows that a card is necessary when using GE. For Nexus, for sure it is, but I've never sent this if using GE. |

I had my interview on a Wednesday and I received my card the following Wednesday. Mrs. xero9 had her interview the Friday after me and she got her card the following Monday. I mention this because your appointment is on a Friday. Also, depending on when your flight is and the time your mail is delivered is really pushing it. The good news is if YVR has GE you can at least use it going into the US. |

You may be right - for sure you need to carry it for Nexus. But I was asked for the card by US CBP once at YYZ when I only gave him the GE printout and boarding pass and he said I was supposed to have it. As with many posts in this thread seems like the officers interpretation of the program vary. Since the GE machines came in, I've never been asked for the card when handing a receipt from the GE kiosk. And unless they've done a new one, the guide, which last time I saw it was still the same one from whenever ago, doesn't mention GE since it wasn't available at that time. Card collectors at pre-clearance, I don't think, can tell whether you are a Nexus member or GE only, with the latter only recently having cards. For me, since I'm always coming into Canada anyway, I always have the Nexus card with me, anyway. |

Any chance you can keep looking? It's still possible to get one closer if you're persistent :)

Well, if you check the last page or so, it seems indeterminate whether you can (may) use GE without the card. We're in agreement that technically, the card serves no function, but undecided whether we think all the officers will agree!
I think getting the card a week after the interview is possible, but keep checking for an earlier interview. canadiancow, the agriculture people want you to "declare" your smarties, even though they're going to let you bring them. I still don't know what "declare" means in the context of the GE screen questions. I had peanuts and oatmeal in my granola bars so I had to answer yes and did not think through the questions from a nut-and-seed-free perspective. |

For the SFO Int'l security line does my nexus get me to the line for elite/1st class /business passenger?
I was not granted that when I went through security on Friday. I thought the line on the left side was the elite line then i realized its the regular line. |

The Nexus card, by itself, does not get you expedited screening at US airports. To get Precheck, enter your PASSID into your reservation. That'll get you the three beeps and into the Pre line.
Just an FYI, as of my last visit, the international terminal did not have a precheck station. You can instead enter a short walk away in the domestic terminal and then walk back airside on the secure side. |

How about flashing my AA EXP card but I'd be traveling on AC, would I be able to use the expedited line? I do enter my Nexus info in my reservation.
