For Nexus, you're looking at 10 weeks for conditional approval. I'm almost at 9 weeks and am still waiting.

Well then, it's definitely not possible :p

Can You Use Nexus During Renewal?

I've scanned through the thread to see if anyone has posted on this, but can you use your Nexus membership while it's in renewal status? I can't find anything on the official sites that says one way or another. I had an 8 week window this summer with no US travel, but I see that renewals are taking a while, and I go back again in mid-August. Obviously, I'd like to use it, I just don't want to get into any trouble over it.

My biggest fear is that they'll approve the renewal without an interview, and I won't get a new card in time for the trip, and some overly "careful" CBP officer will take exception to that.

What do you mean by "in renewal status"? They recommend you apply for renewal 90 days before it expires. Prior to the expiry, it is valid, right? If the expiry occurs before you receive the card, it seems problematic, but you would probably give them a phone call to see what your correct course of action is.

Yes both I and the Mrs have used NEXUS during the renewal process. No problem.

The Bride is currently waiting for her card to arrive by mail after gaining Approved status after her recent renewal interview. We're doing a mail pickup run across the Whirlpool Bridge this coming week using her old card - if there is any problem I'll be sure to post. But no news will be good news.

I have no idea what the answer to the OP's question is. However I believe they are referring to a situation where: (a) the old NEXUS card is not yet expired; (b) the new NEXUS card has been approved and is perhaps in the mail; and (c) the OP does not yet have physical possession of the new NEXUS card--perhaps because it is still in the mail or the OP is travelling when it arrives.

I think the question--to which I don't know the answer--is whether someone could get in trouble by using the old NEXUS card in this situation--since, although not expired, it could be deemed invalid because it is now superseded by the new NEXUS card.

With credit card renewals, my experience has been, in this situation, that the old credit card (if still unexpired) is valid until you call to activate the new credit card. After you call and activate the new credit card, if you try to use the old credit card by mistake, it will be declined.

I have no idea whether NEXUS cards work the same way though.

I've used nexus while waiting to receive my renewal card, no problem. My nexus membership was still valid and I had no reason to assume that I couldn't use it despite not receiving the new card. Which, by the way, is exactly the same as the old card except with a new expiry date.

Yes that makes sense because you have to activate the card on the website, so the old card has not been "superseded" until that happens. At least in my logical reasoning, which may not be the kind of reasoning they practice...

That was definitely what I was asking, and didn't write it quite so clearly. But the credit card analogy was what was in my mind. Would I have an issue using my old card, when they think I should be using my new one. My logic, like yours, says yes. But our logic doesn't always match CBP/CBSA. I've seen that a few people have done it, so I'll breathe a bit easier and take it as it comes. Thanks everyone.

+1. There is an explicit activation process for the cards, so you're safe as long as your old card hasn't expired. And for some reason if it doesn't work, bring your passport along. They'll surely not yell at you if you explain the situation calmly.

Continuing to use "prior" card...

I changed part of my name last year (mostly just to "legally" reflect a change that was made when I was a kid) and continued using my old NEXUS card without issue while the name change review was pending.

Strangely, the CBP did not inform the CBSA of the name change even after I had received the new NEXUS card, so the next time I entered Canada I had a bit of an (understandably) difficult encounter. The CBSA agent directed me to the NEXUS office, where I showed them both my old and new NEXUS cards. Once they completed updating their "side" of things, they kept (and presumably destroyed) the old card.

Meanwhile, my NEXUS card expires in October of this year. I went ahead and applied a few weeks back for renewal. I've had no problem travelling into either country while the renewal is pending.

I'm still hoping going through the multiweek "review" and interview process less than a year ago for the name change would have made me eligible for an expedited (no interview) renewal, but so far I'm still "pending review." I just hope it doesn't end up making the renewal more complicated than it otherwise would have been...

Sorry if this has been asked before... I will be flying into IAD from Europe (on AC reward, continuing on to YYZ). Do they have NEXUS machines in IAD, or do I need to go through the normal US customs? Or can I skip it altogether since I am flying on to YYZ?

The officer told me that was precisely the situation the GE approval was made for. If you have GE, you can enter the US using that system, and then you will use NEXUS in YYZ.

Does your GOES profile feature a notice stating that your fingerprints are on file and that you can use GE? If so, you can use the GE kiosk at any participating U.S. airport or preclearance location.

When does your flight arrive IAD? If you are arriving at a peak time (2-4 p.m.) and have not checked bags, you can head to the International Arrivals Building, normally used by passengers terminating at IAD. This facility, just like the midfield one, features GE, but it allows you to skip the horrendous security line at the midfield checkpoint, instead leading you to a PreCheck checkpoint.

If you have checked bags, this is not a option, as they must be claimed in the midfield baggage claim area.

OP can always attempt to short check the bags to IAD, which will see them delivered to the main terminal. They could then re-check, and go through Pre-Check. Had no problems doing this on DXB-IAD-EWR.. Just told the agent in DXB that we wanted to change clothes, etc, etc, @ IAD, and bags were tagged without issue.

The problem with this strategy is that UA check-in at IAD is a zoo in the afternoon. As this may be the time when the OP is transiting through IAD, the time saved by avoiding the midfield security checkpoint could be lost in the check-in line.

Jacquelyn Hyde, here are two threads about connecting through IAD that may interest you:
