How often do you NEXUS folk get pulled into secondary? I am considering NEXUS because I get pulled in approximately 80% of the times on both sides of the border. I'm wondering whether it would be worth it or whether I'd just be lighting money on fire for the application.
Entering US: 0 times out of 15 Entering Canada: 11 times out of 14, all after shopping trips. The first few times were to confirm what I had delcared on the TDC form versus what I had in my car. After I realized that completing the form was more trouble that not doing it, I stopped using the TDC. I am still sent to secondary most of the times I go through but at least I don't have to take 20 minutes of my time and go through all my reciepts to fill the TDC. I end up paying less taxes than what i would have paid anyways because the CBSA agents never bother to read the receipts correctly, plus my car is never searched that way, I just have to go inside to pay. Before I started to use NEXUS I was only sent once out of over 30 times to secondary for a random check even if I had been in the US for less than 24 hours. Highgate Springs VT / Saint-Armand QC crossing: never flagged for secondary (out of 2 times) Port Canaveral FL (coming back from a cruise, using NEXUS card in regular lane): never flagged for secondary |

Actually, with a NEXUS (or Global Entry) card you do get special privileges crossing the border on foot at San Ysidro/TJ, in that you get to skip the line of waiting people (which can easily be over an hour at many times of the day). I couldn't find a good write-up of it, but there's a video documenting the process available at http://youtu.be/Q5Ly3idpVBc. Unlike at the airport, but like at vehicular crossings, you still have to talk to an agent, but you get to queue jump to the front (which, as has been pointed out, can save you at least half an hour and possibly a lot more).
And of course, since you're on foot, the vehicle inspection part of SENTRI does not apply. The video is a bit out of date (but the video's description notates that). The SENTRI line is now parallel to the regular line. There were maybe 10 people in front of me; it took about 10 minutes of waiting to get through. The regular line looked at least half a mile long (I didn't even walk to the end--I cut into the SENTRI line at the first pedestrian bridge), and at the speed it was moving, it would have been hours. Glad I waited to do this trip until after I had NEXUS! |
Hi guys,
I was wondering if we can still travel on regular lines even if we are Nexus member ? For exemple if we are travelling by air or ground with someone that doesnt have Nexus. Thanks. |

For exemple if we are travelling by air or ground with someone that doesnt have Nexus. By air: The NEXUS member can obviously use the NEXUS/GE kiosk, while the non-member goes through the regular line and meet up in the sterile area. |

Can i still use regular line when i travel by air even if i have a nexus card ? It's just more convenient if i travel with someone until she apply for nexus Thanks for your help^ |
You can use the regular line if you prefer, though I personally always just use the kiosk and meet up with my non-NEXUS travel companion in baggage claim.

Yes, you're always able to use the regular lines. You could technically apply for NEXUS and never actually use it. They don't mind. Also, if you do land crossings you're allowed to enter the US by NEXUS and return using the regular lanes. No harm in that.

Ok guys thanks for your help ^

If someone is traveling by bus from Toronto to Buffalo, is there a way to use the nexus card at the entry point to the US ? How this can be done ?

Went through US connection tonight at YYZ... No more Nexus machines!? Now Global Entry machines. MUCH slower... Must successfully read fingerprints and many more Qs asked ... And now you need to go see a customs agent before you can go through !? Customs agent I spoke to said this was 100% an airline decision and not a US customs immigration change. Fortunately tonight nobody there so no lineup but we have all been there when the hall is packed with people and now we have to line up to see an agent with our global entry slip of paper. Sure they will have a "dedicated lane" but we all know how well those work out :(. Not impressed.
What was confusing was I asked him about children. He said bring them in to be fingerprinted for GE (they weren't originally for Nexus). When I asked the same question last week in Niagara Falls (as I had already read this post) they said no they could not be fingerprinted. I trust the answer from the airport as they handle GE vs. the land border. Short answer make sure that your children are setup for GE or when you cross as a family you will need to stand in line. |

We are proud NEW owners of Nexus cards/GE. I look forward to using them for the first time. I apologise in advance for my question, but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for anywhere:
I would be extremely grateful if someone could take the time to walk me through the process of using the Nexus lanes at border/land crossings. Is it necessary to fill in a TDC? What exactly do you do with this card? Is there still someone you talk to? Can you NOT fill in the card, but pull forward and speak to someone in the booth and make a verbal declaration of purchases made like you do in the regular lanes? When I go through the regular lanes with purchases made less than 24 hours (when there is zero exemption), I occasionally get waved through and do not have to pay duty/taxes. Can I hope that if I make a verbal declaration at the Nexus lane, I may potentailly be waved through too without paying duty/taxes? Many thanks! |
