AC Recognizes Nexus card as Travel document

AC recognized Nexus card as authorized ID. I did YUL-LAX yesterday so I used my Nexus card when I registered for my flight instead of my passport. I filled my travel data with the two nexus questions, a lot faster, less questions.

I love NEXUS ^

First time to know that fact. I never fill out a declaration card prior to arrival

Arriving in Canada with Nexus: 'White' declaration card required.

Arriving in the USA with Nexus: 'Blue' declaration card required.

Arriving in the USA with Global Entry: No card required.

Many of us with Global Entry, when entering the USA, fill out the blue card as a matter of course, in case the Global Entry machines are down, but the Nexus machines as working. If GE is working it stays in my bag and gets thrown away.

Renewal application: July 16
Conditional approval: August 20
Interview: November 4

Admittedly, I could have done better playing the cancellation game in YYZ but at the time a Sunday afternoon appointment sounded like a breeze. Of course the 401 was a nightmare so I arrived with 3 minutes to spare before my appointment to a fairly full waiting area in the Nexus office.

We were out of there in less than 30 minutes ^, including getting my son's irises scanned (now tall enough) by the Canadian officer and doing my prints and new photo with the US officer.

We'll see how it goes next year when the wife's and kids' cards come up for renewal.

I've been using NEXUS for years and have had my passport approved for GE but have not tried it. Can you describe what's involved in using GE at YYZ T1 pre-clearance?

I live in Vancouver, so I can only speak to the experience as a transit passenger (from YVR)

- Proceed to transit transborder door
- Try to get attendant's attention so she opens door
- Proceed inside, show attendant boarding pass; convince her that you are GE and don't need a blue card
- Attendant grudgingly lets you in
- Proceed to GE machine
- Scan passport
- Quickly move head around to get picture
- Camera snaps picture of your chin & your neck
- Scan fingerprints
- Answer traveller customs & immigration questions on screen
- GE machine spits out card including picture of chin
- Proceed to exit, present GE card & BP to agent
- Make jokes about your chin
- Exit to transborder area

You should use that chin shot as your passport picture. Thanks for the guidance.

Has anyone here tried applying with a paper application yet? Have any non-resident canadian citizens here applied for Nexus yet?

I'm trying both because the online application form doesn't seem to have all the bugs fixed with non-resident applications. It accepted my residence address initially but when it sent me back to correct other mistakes (which afaict weren't mistakes) it then added the address as a problem and when I checked the only countries in the drop-down are now US and Canada.

So I sent in the paper application. Two weeks after I mailed it the charge showed up on my credit card. Usually mail takes about a week so that probably means it was less than a week between receiving it and processing the credit card charge:

Nov. 05, 2012 NEXUS/CANPAS/FAST/CDRP-Q MONTREAL, QC $50.00

So if the latency is the same as for the online apps it sounds like I should expect them to process it in about two weeks or about Nov 29. Then they have to mail me a letter of invitation which would take another week. I'm not clear on what happens after that. Anyone know?

(Sadly I'll probably actually be headed to the US before Nov 29 so I would actually miss my best shot at an interview slot :( )

Be careful assuming two weeks. I'm a US citizen living in Canada. I submitted the application online October 4th, and I am still pending review. Not sure what the holdup is.

Amazed and pleased - Interview late Nov 1 afternoon, was told I had an envelope from Nexus that feels like a card inside waiting for me at home in today's mail!

Complete timeline:
Applied Aug 14,
Conditional approval Sept 7,
Very low availability of interview appointments in YYZ and area at that time but was travelling most of October so just took the first available interview which was Nov 1,
Approval at the time of appointment,
Card arrives (address in Canada) Nov 7.

^ that's great! congratulations!
I was interviewed/approved on Nov 2 - crossing my fingers I get my card before Friday so I can try crossing the border this coming long weekend! (Nov. 12 is a bank holiday).

Good luck yours comes tomorrow. I'm heading from YYZ south on Friday morning for a week. I was so sure it would arrive that day after I fly and I wouldn't use it until December or January.
I was pleasantly surprised they provided a RFID blocking sleeve to carry it in (the better to hide the weird photo.)

Possibly this has been answered, but I haven't gone through the 5000+ posts in this thread, so forgive me. I used Nexus at US immigration for the first time today, expecting to need the card (of course! Why else would they give you the fancy card with RF chip, photo, etc?) I needed it to get into the priority security line, but didn't need it at Immigration. Do they rely com-letely on the iris scan, or does the kiosk read the RF chip from the card in my pocket? In which case I guess I will need to take it out of the fancy copper-lined envelope.

It does not read the card at the Airport. You need to show it for visual confirmation to the border agent US bound.

Remember, it is not just used for air. The RFID functions are used at land crossings.

Not necessarily. I haven't shown mine - just the card that prints out.

You definitely need to carry it with you, and considering you need it for the security line five seconds later, it makes sense to have it out, but I've had it in my pocket when walking past the border agent.
