Back to the food issue. Last December, LH was giving out chocolate Advent Calendars in F, so on arrival in the US I declared it using GE, got a receipt with a big "X" on it, and had to see the agent. He took me ahead of everyone (including the crew line) and on hearing I had chocolate, told me "don't do that again", ie, I should not have declared it. It seems this is like many things associated with Nexus and GE, it depends on the individual agent.

You don't really need to declare chocolate with GE. The questions they ask on the kiosk are a little different than the ones they ask on the paper forms. As I mentioned previously, it lists "food" specifically by that name on the paper form, which incorporates pretty much everything, however, on the kiosk, it asks about specific kinds of food only.

A kind reminder for everyone already using Nexus. If you are up for renewal, do it early. 90 days before expiration doesn't seem to be enough, I suggest at least 4-6 months ahead of expiration.

I personally had waited 7 weeks and it's still on pending review, also heard about the schedule for interview going 2-3 months out. Sounds like the renewal is at least a 14-16 week duration event.

It seems to be about 6-8 weeks right now. My renewal was approved and the card came with an expiration in May 2017, so there is no time penalty in renewing early. I did not need an interview, the card came 3 days after approval.

I didn't realize that some renewal require interview and some don't. I thought everyone needs to go through interview process as part of renewal. News to me.

Makes me wonder what prompt them to decide whether a renewal application need to go thru interview again.

Interestingly enough, I was in the office at YYZ a few days ago and asked the agent about this. He said he's never heard of renewals that don't require an interview....

As for me, my renewal took 6 weeks to process...submitted Jan. 2 and got the email on Feb. 16, I think. Interviews are another story, I live in CVG, and never know 3 months in advance that I'll be in YYZ...been looking for a late March interview, but they haven't had any at all in most of the last week and a half (and yes, I'm checking several times a day).

Might have to bite the bullet and drive the 4 hours to DTW, which is the closest office. I think its about time they opened one in downtown Toronto.

Could you find an hour and a half to drive to Niagara Falls or Fort Erie when you're in Toronto? Seems better than 4 to DTW.

Hmm. Maybe it is because I am a dual citizen, so there is no question of my having to prove eligibility to cross the border. Perhaps if you are not a dual citizen, they need to interview you to make sure that you are not planning on working illegally in the other country?

What is the maximum amount of time you're allowed to schedule your interview once you reach conditional approval? Is it 90 days?

You need to schedule it within 30 days. From the GOES FAQ:

You will need to schedule an appointment within 30 days of being conditionally approved. The actual appointment date can be beyond the 30-day period. For example, the scheduled appointment date can be several months from now, as long as you schedule it within 30 days of the conditional approval date. Failing to schedule the interview within 30 days from the date of conditional approval will result in being denied.

Nope...not it. I'm dual too, but still need an "interview" which the same officer also told me was more in-person confirmation than anything else.

Global Entry + TN Visa

Has anyone used GE/Nexus being a Canadian citizen with a TN Visa?

When I walk up to the GE kiosks upon entry to the US, it asks me what kind of visa I would like to enter on, it goes though a couple after I reply "on business": B1, B2, etc. But never asks if I would like to enter as TN, landing me a giant "X". Do I have to set this up by visiting their office or is this the (unfortunate) normal course? Did I answer the first question (what are you here for? Personal or Business) wrong?

Much appreciated if anyone can guide me in the right direction.

As TN is not a visa, you won't find it on the list of visas. You should ask at a GE or Nexus office. Absolutely do not answer the personal/business question, or any other question, wrongly!

I have a TN option on the Global Entry kiosks... I'd go into a NEXUS / GE enrollment centre and speak to them about it.

By selecting the TN option, I get a new I94 printed out. I usually return the kiosk I94, since the one issued to me originally is valid for longer and is tied to my NEUXS. I verified with a CBP officer that is what I should do... you may get a different answer from someone else though.

My boyfriend is on a TN and we both used Global Entry for the first time yesterday. When he got to that part, he turned to me at the next kiosk and if he choose the right option. I just read where it said stuff about "business" and I thought he got it wrong, but then I saw that it said "TN" to the far left of the option he picked. It was the 3rd option if I remember correctly.
