Here is a quote from an email I got from YYC Airport Operations:

A few things happened last fall to make the peak times an issue:
1. Air Canada initiated HNL and OGG service with 763. Departure times for AC services were at the same time as WS service to LAX, PHX, PSP, and one other USA destination.
2. In response to the new services, AC moved USA checkin to six podiums that were previously only used for international (LHR, FRA) and charter checkin. AC's previous six slots were allocated to WS, UA, and CO. WS also built another counter with two podiums at their end.
3. Bag services built a new sort and hold facility where gate 29 was located, this increased capacity for transborder throughput.
4. Peak time has transferred from early morning (6:30am -8am) to late morning (10am to 11:30 am with another departure bank at 12:30pm to 2pm). The late morning peak time is because of the new WS services with 737s and AC HNL/OGG service.

I asked a UA CSR (they're right at the entrance) about how strict they are about the two-hour rule. Agent said during non-busy times they really don't care. They start caring when traffic gets high.

Came through last week around 11:00 a.m., nobody was monitoring who entered the hall (except for the people making sure Customs cards were already filled out).

If you want to send a note with some teeth to YYC management, point out that with the two-hour rule, long lines at both pre-clearance and "security," you are not able to purchase at places like Tim's or Harvey's. It's only when things affect the bottom line of the airport (and/or airline) will management start caring about the comments of passengers.

Do they not let Nexus members through at least, even with the rule? At YYZ, anyway, even at the height of the lines after the Christmas incident, and other couple of times I've seen lines out the hall/calling by flight number, even then they let Nexus members through.

Question: Nexus online application - forgot a visited country

Hello,
I took the plunge after reading the threads here and at the insistence of friends.

I did the online application and submitted it.
Now i remember that i went on a cruise to the bahamas and forgot to add that in.

Am i basically done like dinner? Or do i bring it up if i make the interview?
Must be old age catching up to me.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that. Both currently at YYC and in the height of the insanity at YYZ, I did not try flashing the NEXUS card, didn't have a need to do so. Only place I ever flash the NEXUS card is YVR, where at times it's an absolute life saver.

I did just that in my email of concern to YYCAA. I also mentioned how the brand new Rocky Mountain Lounge could not justify a $20 charge for 1/2 hour of use (assuming it takes 1 hours to get through CBP and Security plus 1/2 hour for boarding) and this did not phase YYCAA. The Rocky Mountain Lounge is supported (read losses are covered) by the airport authority and this did get some traction in their responses.

The 2 hour rule appears to be set from US CBP side due to their inability to handle all the traffic. This claim is not exclusive to YYC, YVR had a similar situation in mid 2000s. US CBP refused to handle all traffic for the summer season due to the large passenger influx for Alaska Cruise season. Consequently Harmony, CX, AC, and Philipine Airlines did not process some flights through US Preclearance and instead used domestic or international terminals.

As a general rule of thumb, Nexus members are allowed through regardless of the 2 houir rule. Prior to the 2 hour rule, the Commissionaires (who man the front gate to US CBP) would enforce the 7:30am rule. With 2000 seats between 6-8am, the commissionaires would refuse entry to customers whose BP listed a departure post 7:30am. On atleast 3 occaisions I used my Nexus card to run through the blockade. The Commissionaire would clear a path through the unwashed masses and get me to the Nexus lane.

I say its a general rule as sometimes the Commissionaires are not full time airport people (e.g. shift coverage for short staff, or new to airport post). At these times the rules can be changed or made up on the spot.

Outbound use of Nexus is not as big of an issue as Inbound. I have heard stories from other Nexus users that YYC White Hatters (they volunteer welcome brigade) will get summoned to organize the Canada Customs hall during period of peak demand. At these times the White Hatters will hold incomming passengers in the upper hallway and not permit Nexus card holders through the line and at the lower hall direct card holders away from the Nexus machines and to regular line.

What to expect - children NEXUS interview

I've got a NEXUS card and just applied to get one for my kids (5 and 3 yrs old). They've been conditionally approved, and now it's time to schedule the "interview". Based on my previous experience, I can only assume the interview process is modified somewhat for kids. What should I be expecting here... has anyone done this with young kids before?

I've had them try this once on me in the upper hallway. With a minimum 1.5 hour wait had I stayed where I was, I wasn't having any of it. Just made clear that the line didn't apply to Nexus holders and they could call someone to ask if they so felt like it. They let us through.

Mention it during the interview. People do forget things; it's understandable.

Find the menu item above "search this thread" and type in "children".

Lots of good info available. You mention that you have NEXUS and have applied for the kids as well. What about your spouse? Unless the whole family has cards, you can't get the full benefit.

The "interview" is a non-event. Basically they look at the kids and issue the cards. Avoid the retina scan for the kids if possible. It will be less of a hassle down the line .

Check the schedule daily. Heck, even multiple times daily.....availability changes quickly, you will likely find something else sooner.

Slightly OT.
Crossed in Port Huron last Monday afternoon.
Held NEXUS card out window and rolled by scanner, dropped self report in box, waved my passport at CBS agent who - opened one eye, and waved me thru without even opening the window on the both. total time - 11.5 secs!
Best land crossing ever!!!! NEXUS rocks!
