Applied Feb 13, 2018
Approved for Secondary Inspection April 17, 2018 - two days after I returned home from Haneda :/
Duration = 2 months, 4 days

I'm planning the next visit in mid November which leaves about 7 months between the visits, so I may need to Withdraw and re-apply since my approval would be outside the 6 month window. Has anyone withdrawn after being approved for preliminary because they wouldn't make it in time for secondary, then re-applied? It is about 5.5 months to entry if I re-apply soon so I may just do that, as I don't have any layovers through the area & quick nonstop turns are quite expensive.

Finally received notice that my preliminary inspection is complete, six and half months after applying. Got tired of waiting, so applied for the APEC card and was approved. I've been using that, mainly at KIX, for the last four months. Very satisfied with it, but I'll go ahead and complete my JTTP enrollment next time I'm there.

NRT is introducing facial recognition for inbound passengers. It looks like they are basically automating their immigration gates, with one agent for 6 kiosks. It is good to see them finally trying to address the unpleasant delays that are not expected in such a tech-savvy and efficient country. The system should be installed in at least four airports by the end of the year, so it will be interesting to see how well they work in real life:

NRT Face Recognition

BTW, is there any reason why people who qualify for APEC would NOT take advantage of that program? People here keep mentioning that they reluctantly signed up after giving up on JTTP. I would love to be able to sign up, but my travel is purely for leisure. I am just glad the I qualify for for this program solely due to GE. But if this new program works out, TTP may end up being a waste of time anyway.

Article seems to suggest this will only apply for nationals and it will free up more officers to manually screen foreigners. One question is whether face recognition gates will still require a sticker in the passport or not. For users in countries like the US that no longer allow pages to be added in, one nice benefit of TTP is less passport page usage.

After three attempts, I have no idea why I keep getting denied.

I've read that there is the three entries requirement in the last year I guess that's probably the reason especially since I changed my passport recently.

I have been using TTP since last Nov, and visit Japan quite regularly. Couple of questions that I've not been able to find online:
  1. If I renew my passport, will my new passport work with my existing TTP card?
  2. What happens when there is no space left on the back of the TTP card?

For #2 , Kaix at post #130 above has a great writeup on obtaining a replacement card when it's full.

Or can I just clear security as a transfer passenger and approach the departure immigration office from the exit side of the counters?
Wait, so have they moved it for NRT? It used to be on the 2nd (3rd?) floor between the north and south wings of T1. My card is starting to get full.... Where is it now?

And in case I go to HND, where is it there?

Not to worry, there are landside and departure counters at each of the four airports that handle TTP applications.

Using JR pass

I know there was discussion earlier in thread regarding tax-free shopping and a need for sticker. Is the same true for redeeming an exchange voucher for a JR pass? I'm finally going to get out of Tokyo and travel around, and want to know if I can use a JR pass using the temporary visitor Visa on the back of my TTP card.

According to JR website, a sticker is necessary but I don't believe there are any data points in this thread for anyone trying to use just the TTP card to exchange for a Railpass.

About JAPAN RAIL PASS JAPAN RAIL PASS

In order to receive or use JAPAN RAIL PASS, your passport must bear this stamp or sticker.
*If you use an automated gate, no stamp will be applied to your passport. Either use a manned automated gate or ask a clerk to apply the stamp to your passport.

I'm not surprised that the JR website would say this. But, again the real requirement is the temporary visitor visa, which the TTP card provides, but usually comes in the form of the aforementioned sticker. Of course, this is Japan, I don't speak the language with any fluency, and culturally, and they tend to follow the rules pretty closely.

I don't think that I have any stickers left that aren't expired, but maybe they won't look too closely. =) I'm tempted to take one for the team and report back.

I'm flying into CTS, Sapporo. Anybody know if I can go to the regional immigration office to finish my registration (got completion of preliminary inspection already).
