Within a certain number of days, or just before trying to use that card? Thanks.

I believe you have to activate it within 30 days of issuance.

What happens if you don't? I'll be out of the country for the next two months.

Please refer to the following thread:If you do not activate the card within 30 days, it will be voided and you won't be able to use it at land borders. There is at least one report that a non-activated card was confiscated when an FT member tried to use it to enter the US at a land border.

Eighteen months is at the very long end of the announced backlog/waiting period. I'd call in or inquire when entering the U.S.

IIRC someone once posted on this thread the exact phone number and then combination of digit + # to get to a human. I did that on my prior renewal in 2019, and after I called (after 10 months of "pending review") it seemed to help as I got approved in a month after my call.

Can someone either re-post that info or a link to that particular message thread? TIA

I applied for renewal (expired last year) on 4/19.
On 5/15, emailed them and was told it's still pending
On 5/30, visited the enrollment center at the airport after an international trip - still pending

Today 7/9 (day 81) I called 877-227-5511 (#6/#1/#4/#0) and after several tries got to speak with a live person, and requested to escalate the application.
He confirmed that it was more than 11 weeks, checked the info, said he "can see it's in the final stages" - whatever that means, and that there are no issues with it. Then he escalated it. The email he sent says:

Current wait times for resolution is 3-4 weeks. We will contact you via this incident number once the request has been processed.

Regarding the grace period: Is the extension granted automatically? I‘ve just read in another board, where someone applied for renewal and the expiry date was set immediately to date of application + 1 year.

When I submitted my renewal application in June 2023 nothing changed and expiry date is still my birthday in a few days. So I’m afraid all benefits will be ceased then.

From the Global Entry Frequently Asked Questions:

Renewing Global Entry Membership

You become eligible to renew your membership one year prior to program expiration. If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date.

Friend renewed this past Tuesday afternoon and was approved this morning approximately 36 hours after completing the renewal process

Applied for second renewal February 1, 2023. Approved January 30, 2024, two days short of one full year. No interview required. New expiration date is January 3, 2029, exactly five years from previous expiration.

I finally got my renewal approved after 360 days! My card was due to expire on my birthday this past July so I renewed on February 5th, 2023. Made only one international trip this past October with no issues at Customs here in Houston. And what's funny is my son and daughter in law both filed their renewals 3 weeks ago and got confirmation within 12 days they were approved!

No mention of whether they will send a new card with the new expiration date. Do they send it or do I need to ask for it?

Yes, you will receive a new card with a new expiration date. Typically within 2-4 weeks from approval.

One year

Similar thing as some previous posts. Applied 1/11/23. Full approval 1/30/24. No interview needed. Basically 1 year.
