6) IAH/MIA--April 1974
CO and National (NA)
National offered three flights using 720s
and Contintental with 2 flights; one with 72s and one with DC10.

Correct! Here's the actual routing with a B747:

DL 25: DTW-TPA-MIA

BTW, there was no return 747 service on Delta from MIA to TPA at this time, although DL was operating a pair of morning departures from MIA to TPA with DC-10s (this was before they finally took delivery of delayed L-1011s) as well as an afternoon flight with a DC-9-30.

Almost correct - sort of! CO and NA were the only two carriers operating IAH-MIA at this time; however, looks like you've got the equipment mixed up! CO operated three (3) roundtrip flights with B720B aircraft while NA operated one flight with a DC-10 and the other flight with a B727-200. And I think that's what you meant!

BTW, I do not believe that NA ever operated the B720 or B720B (although CO certainly operated the DC10 and 72S and did indeed operate these types between IAH and MIA later on).

Thanks for pointing out my mixup of aircraft types^!

Thanks again to jlemon for this fine collection of questions. I am doubly appreciative as I know coming up with them involves research and a fair bit of time. I'll have a go at five more...

2) Also during the winter of 1962, this airline operated what they called "Cotton Queen" jet service between three (3) U.S. cities in the south and southeast. Two different jet aircraft types were used on these routes. Identify the airline, the two aircraft types and the three cities.

The "Cotton Queen" service went to the Tennessee cities of Chattanooga, Memphis and Knoxville. The ad below is from my collection, but it's from the 1940s. Moving on to the 1960s, I know the Viscount would have been used but I'm at a loss to figure the other jet.

Capital Airways Cotton Queen Ad

Note: the time line for questions 5) through 12) is April of 1974

7) Also at this time, there was just one (1) daily roundtrip nonstop flight between Houston (IAH) and Memphis (MEM) and also just one (1) daily roundtrip nonstop flight between Houston (IAH) and Newark (EWR). Each route was flown by a different airline. Name the respective airlines and the equipment they flew on these routes.

I'm pretty sure it was Eastern between Houston and Newark. I flew an EA L-1011 on the EWR-IAH route in 1977, but in 1974 I'd say it was probably operated by a 727-100. As to the IAH-MEM run, I'm going to go with American, again using a 727-100.

13) How many destinations did Southern Airways serve that were located west of the Mississippi River? Also name these destinations.

Well Denver and Wichita for sure because I flew a Southern DC-9-10 on the DEN-ICT-MEM route in 1979. I know Southern also served St. Louis and Minneapolis, but I'm not sure what side of the river those two cities are on. I think they're on the west side though, so I'll include them as well.

18) Name two (2) airlines that operated nonstop jet service between Gainesville, FL (GNV) and Miami (MIA) in November of 1979. Also identify the aircraft they operated on this route.

Even if I were back home I have no OAGs from the late 1970s. I know Eastern served Gainsville with jets, probably a 727-100 or DC-9-10, but as to the other airline... maybe Atlantic Gulf with a BAC-111...

20) In February of 1985, this airline operated nonstop jet service on the short hop from Stockton (SCK) to Oakland (OAK). Name the airline and identify the aircraft type used on the route.

I think Frontier used to fly this route, using a 737-200.

7) IAH/MEM--1974 (April) Delta #854 6:00pm/7:11pm DC8
IAH/EWR-- Eastern #56 6:55pm/10:52pm 727

cs57 Sep 10, 2012 5:31 pm

18) GNV/MIA--11/15/79
Air Florida two daily flights using 737 and Friday only late pm flight using DC9. Eastern had one daily flight (late pm), using D9S.

2) Well, believe it or not, two (2) airlines had "Cotton Queen" service!

From the February 1, 1962 timetable for Delta Air Lines:

Now on Delta....."Cotton Queen" Jet Service between MEMPHIS * ATLANTA * MIAMI .....

The first and only Jets between Memphis - Atlanta - Miami! Choice of Deluxe or Jetourist!

And two aircraft types flown on DL's "Cotton Queen" service were the Douglas DC-8 and the Convair 880.

7) Eastern with B727-100 service once a day between IAH and EWR is correct! However, another airline was flying between IAH and MEM.....

13) Denver (DEN) and Wichita (ICT) are obviously correct.....and St. Louis (STL) and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) are correct as well. Plus, there was one more city west of the Mississippi River that was served by Southern Airways with DC-9 jet service: Monroe, LA (MLU).

And here's a follow up question: Identify seven (7) cities in the state of Alabama that were served by Southern Airways with DC-9 jet equipment in February of 1976.

18) Eastern is correct with D9S service. However, there was another airline serving the GNV-MIA route as well with jet equipment as this time and it was not Atlantic Gulf.....

20) Correct! I believe the actual FL routing was either SCK-OAK-DEN or DEN-SCK-OAK-DEN flown with a 73S.

7) Correct! Here are the complete routings:

DL 853: DTW-MEM-IAH Equip: DC8
DL 854: IAH-MEM-DTW Equip: DC8

EA 56: IAH-EWR-BOS Equip: 727
EA 57: BOS-EWR-IAH Equip: 727

Lots of UA flights these days between IAH and EWR flown with ex-CO 777s, 764s, 752s, 739s, 738s.....I flew this route many times on good old CO.

Correct! And I think the Friday night only flight operated by Air Florida was flown with a DC-9-10.......

4) In the summer of 1968, Trans-Texas Airways (TTa) was operating their new DC-9-10 jets to seven (7) destinations nonstop from Dallas Love Field (DAL). Identify all seven destinations.

Note: the time line for questions 5) through 12) is April of 1974.....

14) In the spring of 1978, what airline was operating a daily nonstop flight between Tampa (TPA) and Tulsa (TUL)? Also identify the equipment.

15) In the fall of 1979, there were four (4) airlines operating jet service between Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) and Tulsa (TUL). Name all four carriers as well the aircraft types they operated on the route.

16) In November of 1979, how many daily jet flights were operated in the two (2) hour time period between the hours of 11:30pm and 1:30am from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Miami (MIA)? Four (4) different airlines operated flights during this time period on the short hop from FLL to MIA, so for bonus points identify them along with the aircraft types they operated on this route.

23) In the spring of 1995, two (2) airlines operated nonstop service between South Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) and Los Angeles (LAX). One airline operated jet aircraft and the other flew a turboprop on the route as a code share service for a major carrier. Identify both airlines and the equipment they operated on the route.

25) In April of 1995, there were no less than eight (8) domestic U.S. air carriers flying scheduled services from Las Vegas (LAS) to Los Angeles (LAX). Seven of these airlines operated jet equipment on the route with two of these carriers operating wide body aircraft. And the eighth airline operated turboprops on the route. Identify all eight airlines and the various aircraft they flew from LAS to LAX.

17) Freeport/Miami (1979)
Eastern with D9S,72s, and L10
Air Florida with 737, DC9
Bahamasair with B11
24) LAX/LAP (1995)
AeroCalifornia (JR) with DC9
Thanks for taking the time to post these questions, JLEMON!

17) Correct! Eastern (EA) had three daily flights from FPO to MIA with L-1011, 72S and D9S equipment, Bahamasair (UP) operated two flights a day with BAC One-Eleven aircraft (one of these flights did not operate on Tuesdays) and Air Florida (QH) also operated two flights a day, one with a 737 (a -200 series, I think) and the other with a DC-9-10 (which did not operate on Wednesdays).

24) Correct again! Aero California (JR) flew LAX-LAP with a DC-9-10. I almost flew on JR from LAX to Loreto, Mexico one fine day.....however, I'm kinda glad I didn't as good friends (who had flown on this Mexican air carrier) subsequently informed me that Aero California's DC-9s were beat up and in bad shape. And, indeed, the Mexican government finally shut JR down......
