5. What is the largest mammal (non-cartoon) ever painted onto an airplane?

Per
teddybear99: If I remember correctly, I saw a picture of a Nigerian Airlines A310 with an elephant in the middle of their logo "N" on their tail, from back in the 80's when I did a research project a few years ago on 3rd world airlines and their safety records.

We're looking for an animal that would've taken up most of the fuselage...

Per jrl767: Didn’t ANA have a 744 painted with several blue whales?

It did, but then those were done in cartoon style. Indeed, it was that ANA 747 I was thinking of when I inserted the non-cartoon stipulation.

Remember, we're looking for a photographic likeness, along the lines of Denver based Frontier's tails (A whole different animal) Please, guess again

A good guess, Mr. R., but we're looking for a different university on a different aircraft flown by a different airline a few years earlier.

Please, guess again!

Right on, Mr. L.! St. Louis was TWA country, but Eastern did operate a mini-hub out of there. Had you flown the Eastern flight in question, this would've been your schedule:

EA 192 St. Louis (STL) 1100a - 148p Washington DC (DCA) DC-9-10 Luncheon X6

Just a quick heads up, folks -

I'm just heading out the door to drive 120 miles down to work. I won't be done until 900pm ADT. (UTC-09:00)

I look forward to addressing your responses then!

Ach, darn it

I haven't been to the US often enough to have seen any other that the WTA craft and also several bearing the CAU logo as we drove past the airfield in Bakersfield. I'll have to leave this one for a more learned FTer probably.

You’ll get to fly aboard that same aircraft type on each of those eight flights with each flight going nonstop in a west or north-northwesterly direction from New Orleans all the way up to Alaska. I’ve provided some hints as to which state each airport will be located in. Your job is to fill in the blanks below with the correct city and airline. Are you up to it?

GREAT JOB, J! ^ You've correctly identified Boeing's 720 and matched the correct airline to the correct routing in every case except LAX-SFO-PDX which I'll give you anyway because both airlines operated 720s over both routes and it really could've gone either way. I've placed the actual airline and flight number along side each route in boldface type.

Hey now - for someone who doesn't live in this country, you're way smarter than the average bear about such things.^ So - lemme give you a hint. Both the airline and the University are based in the same city. The airline is no longer with us.

Trans World Airlines

Spot on, KT! Mr. Loewy is also credited with Northeast Airline's Yellowbird livery

Republic and Wright are indeed safe bets, as is Air Ontario. Alas, Bar Harbor did not fly its Convairs as far west as Cleveland.

Care to have another go at that elusive fourth airline?
I'm out of town for the next couple of days, so I'll post tomorrow's answers in advance without going over my daily allowance

Actually, there is no daily allowance, per se. I just wanted to limit participants from answering 5-10 at a time, which was a problem for some in the early stages of this thread.
If you've answered a couple and I've responded to them and there's still time in the day, by all means take a stab at a couple more.

For the benefit of anyone new to the quiz who’d like to join in, we welcome your participation.

The intent of this quiz is have you provide your best educated answer or guess (just like a quiz in school) rather than to merely go look up the answer on the internet, which in many cases could be easily done but would then reduce this to little more than a simple toss and fetch exercise.

There’s no harm in providing the wrong answer (See most of mine, of late ) and some of the answers provided along the journey to the true answer engender some interesting discussions and memories along the way.

So then, we're off to a fast start on this batch. Here are the rest:

LOGOJETS
Note: To qualify as a logojet, the majority of the livery must be dedicated to promoting its subject. A mere sticker or decal would not by itself qualify.

4. This American NFL football team has been immortalized as a logojet on a foreign airline’s jet. Identify the team along with the airline and aircraft type that it’s represented on.

5. What is the largest mammal (non-cartoon) ever painted onto an airplane?

6. Identify all of the American MLB baseball teams that have been represented as logojets. Team airplanes (such as the LA Dodgers 720B) and sports charters do not count. Nor do aircraft which wear the host airline’s livery with only a team logo decal applied. There are less teams and logojets than you might think. Alright then – batter up!

7. This American pop star has been made larger than life on a logo jet operated by a foreign airline. Identify the pop star, the airline and the aircraft type.

8. What was the first U.S. university to be the subject on a logojet? Identify the school, the airline and the aircraft type.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE SOURCED FROM A 1970 OAG

11. Identify the longest scheduled turboprop operated nonstop flight listed in this 1970 OAG. Airline, aircraft and route please.

12. Everybody knows that the longest scheduled flight operated between airports within the 50 United States is the 4970 flight between New York and Honolulu. Based upon the 1970 schedules, identify the second and third longest flights as well as the airline and aircraft that operated them. And yes, Hawaii was involved...

13. Identify the longest scheduled piston engine operated nonstop flight listed in this OAG. Airline, aircraft and route please.

14. Identify the only transcon route in the United States that has no flights operated by four engine jets.

15. Identify the only three airlines in the U.S. that in 1970 operated some or all of their 727-200s in an all economy class configuration.

16 (The jlemon Special) It’s Thanksgiving weekend and you’ve just finished a delicious cheesesteak sandwich while watching your Philadelphia Flyers wreak havoc on the hapless New York Rangers. Man! The Broad Street Bullies whupped up on them Rangers like a red headed stepchild! And tomorrow, the Eagles are in a classic NFC East battle against the hated Dallas Cowboys. What a weekend! Suddenly the phone rings. Not so fast, says your boss. I need you in St. Louis by Monday morning. Oh no! You’ll have to fly out tomorrow afternoon. Unfortunately, because it’s Sunday on Thanksgiving weekend, all of the mid-day, afternoon and evening flights are sold out. The only thing available is a four-stop flight departing Philadelphia tomorrow morning at 6:35am. So be it. Book it, Danno! Identify the airline, the enroute stops and the equipment please.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE SOURCED FROM A 1976 NORTH AMERICAN OAG

17. A fairly thorough perusal of the OAG has revealed two U.S. airlines that still operate DC-6 flights. Can you identify them both? (I’m willing to investigate more U.S. airlines if anyone has any suggestions)
A N S W E R E D

MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS

22. It’s 1972 and you’re flying on a domestic US flight aboard a single aisle aircraft with a mid-cabin lounge complete with stand-up bar. What aircraft and airline would you be flying upon?

24. The DC-8 was originally offered in four different models – the -10, -20, -30 and -40. Can you identify which airline launched service with each type and over which routes those flights commenced?

26. In 1984, three airlines operated all-economy class configured aircraft on the New York JFK to Miami route. Identify the three airlines and the equipment each operated

30. The stretched models of the DC-8 (series 60s) were available in three different models – the -61, -62 and -63. Can you identify which airline launched service with each type and over which routes those flights commenced?

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE SOURCED FROM A 1966 OAG

31. You’ve successfully completed three days of a corporate workshop in Lincoln, Nebraska and lived to write about it. Your flight home to Denver really ought to be in First Class. After all, you’ve earned it! A check of the schedules reveals lots of multi-stop flights and a single nonstop flight upon which First Class is indeed offered. Identify the airline and aircraft flying that nonstop flight.

32. The autumn climate in Houston has become downright dreadful with temperatures on the 90s and humidity to match. It’s time to fly north to your cabin in the hills outside Denver where the forecast for this weekend calls for temperatures in the 50s with copious amounts of warm Colorado sunshine. Back in 1966, there was only one nonstop flight per day between HOU and DEN and it was sold out, as were the three one stop flights. What’s this? Here’s a 4-stop flight departing at 8:45am daily that not only has a First Class cabin but also serves a breakfast and a luncheon along the way. It even stops in San Antonio where you can say hello to your old station agent friend if he’s working that day. Book it, Danno! Identify the airline, the aircraft and the four enroute stops.
A N S W E R E D

33. Based upon my 1966 North American OAG, if you were to fly out of the northernmost airport with commercial airline service in North America, what airline would you be flying and what type of aircraft would you be flying upon?

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE SOURCED FROM A 1998 OAG

37. Normally your job has you flying the nonstop flight between your home in Colorado Springs and either Chicago or Houston. This time however, business demands you be in San Antonio. Well dang – that’s going to require a connection in either Denver or Houston – neither of which you look forward to. Imagine then your surprise and delight when the company’s travel office informs you that you’ll be flying down to SAT aboard a nonstop flight. Woo-Hoo! Who knew there was nonstop service between COS and SAT? Or that it wouldn't be on hometown airline Western Pacific? Identify the airline and aircraft you’ll be flying upon.

39. If you wanted to fly between Cancun and Miami in early 1998, you had a choice of four airlines. Two of them – AA and MX – you’ve logged plenty of flights upon. The other two are foreign carriers operating via fifth freedom rights. Neither of these airlines is from North or Central America and neither is operating widebody equipment. Can you identify each airline and the equipment each operates?

40. This week the job has you flying from Calgary to Toronto. Canada’s two legacy carriers, AC and CP, offer comfortable flights aboard widebodied airplanes but at exorbitant prices. In the course of discussing options with your travel agent, you learn that another airline offers a one stop flight departing YYC at 7:00am. Better yet, a seat can be had on this flight for about half the price of the big boys. Book it, Danno! Identify the airline, the aircraft and the enroute stop.

42. You’re in Tampa, Florida courtesy of a successful run the week before on the blackjack tables at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. You’re still feeling lucky, so why not head on over to the casinos in Biloxi, Mississippi to try and add a bit more to your bank account? You’re pleased to discover that there’s a nonstop flight offering First Class accommodations that’s heading out to GPT from TPA later this afternoon. Identify the airline and the aircraft that you’ll be flying across the gulf to Biloxi.

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE SOURCED FROM A 1982 OAG

43. Duty calls in the form of a sales and service call up in Hartford, Connecticut. You’ll need to be up there bright and early on Monday morning which means you’ll have to fly up on Sunday. Well dang! Here you were looking forward to a weekend of sun and sand on Florida’s Gulf Coast and now you’ve got to switch that out for the cold rain and snow of Hartford. Worse still, you’ll probably have to connect in Atlanta. Sigh… Imagine then your surprise and delight to discover a single daily direct one-stop flight from little ‘ol Sarasota straight on into Hartford. As an added bonus, lunch and a snack will be served along the way. Book it, Danno! Identify the airline, the aircraft and the enroute stop if you please.

44. Business went well in Hartford, but before you can return home you’ve been requested to stop and do a quick consult with a client in Baltimore. Hmm… this sounds like a flight with Useless Air. But no! US Air’s flight is sold out! However, another airline offers three nonstop flights out of Bradley down to Baltimore. You book the early morning departure out of Bradley which includes a snack. Identify the airline as well as the aircraft that you’ll be flying down to Baltimore.

45. Geez, what a week! Now your wife has called and asked if you could stop off in Miami on the way home to check out some porcelain tiles that she’d like to redo the kitchen with. Sigh… Yes, Dear. You've booked yourself a seat on Eastern’s single daily nonstop only to be informed upon check-in that the flight has been cancelled due to a mechanical malfunction. However, you’ve been protected aboard another airline that also flies between Baltimore and Miami. Luncheon will be served enroute. Well okay then. Things are looking up! Identify the airline and the aircraft that you’ll be flying down to Miami. If you like, try to guess what was being served for lunch as well.

46. The quest for the porcelain tiles goes awry in Miami, forcing you to rent a car and drive over to Ft. Myers where the next day you find exactly what you’re looking for, and at a great price, too. You could just drive on up to Sarasota but amongst the three airlines that offer flights between Ft. Myers and Sarasota, one of them is offering a great low fare of just $19.00 one way. It also is the only one of the three airlines that operates an aircraft built in sunny California. You have a thing for California built aircraft so you book a seat on the daily mid-afternoon departure. Identify the airline and the aircraft that you’ll be flying home to Sarasota upon.

47. North Carolina is playing Ohio State in Columbus this weekend. This is one game you don’t want to miss, especially since your daughter attends OSU and just called to say she’s won a pair of courtside tickets by virtue of having attained the Dean’s List for the second straight semester. You call Piedmont to book a seat. What’s this? Piedmont doesn’t fly that route. Whaaaat?! In fact, only one airline does and it doesn’t even operate jets. At least it’s a decently sized prop though, one with capacity for over 30 passengers. The flight makes one enroute stop. Well alright then. Book it, Danno! Identify the airline, the aircraft and the enroute stop.

48. Identify the four airlines that in 1982 served Cleveland with Convair turboprops.
A N S W E R E D

49. Three airlines operate large turboprop equipment between St. Kitts and St. Maarten. Large means aircraft that carry more than 20 passengers. Each airline operates a different type of equipment. Identify each airline and the equipment it operates.

50. You’ve just gotten a call from an old college buddy to join him and a couple of your old fraternity brothers for a ski weekend in Vermont. Dude! Can you make it? From your home in Alexandria, VA the closest airport is Washington National. A quick call to your travel agent and Boom! You’re booked on a two stop direct flight putting you into Burlington in plenty of time for lunch with Da Boyz before driving out to the slopes. Dude!!! Surprisingly, the airline you’re booked on is not US Air. Oh well. At least you’ll be flying aboard a jet. Identify the airline, the aircraft and the two enroute stops.

I’m thinking these were United DC-8s operating Honolulu - Chicago (4230 miles) and San Francisco - Boston (2696 miles)

well, I don’t think PSA had their 72S fleet that early, but United had a competing West Coast operation with the bigger variant ... the other candidates would be Allegheny and Frontier

This certainly seems plausible - as does any route out into the Aleutians - but no! At 1259 nautical air miles, this route is not the longest. Please, guess again!

Reeve Aleutian Airways operating a Douglas DC-6 nonstop between Anchorage (ANC) and St. Paul Island (SNP).

Again, a most reasonable choice given the distances involved in getting around that part of the world. Alas, ANC-SNP checks in at just 769 miles. The route I'm looking for is over 1000 miles long

17. A fairly thorough perusal of my 1976 OAG has revealed two U.S. airlines that still operate DC-6 flights. Can you identify them both? (I’m willing to investigate more U.S. airlines if anyone has any suggestions)

Reeve Aleutian Airways (RV) and Mackey International (MI).

That's the two I came up with as well. Spot on, Mr. Lemon!
