Big difference between that and the hypothetical 10" Eee (which Asus has occasionally suggested may happen) is that the Eee is a real PC under the skin - slow processor, yes, but fully x86 compatible... small flash drive, yes, but it still looks like a drive to a PC OS.

The Foleo was more like an oversized HTC advantage: it had an ARM-based processor and a PDA-based platform, and was limited to the much smaller set of software which would run on that. Hardly all that useful.

I am just one of those folks that likes to see if all the bugs are worked out before I buy. Also If the 4g model drops to $250 when the 8g model becoms widely available-well that could have been used on a milage run and I would be upset.
J&R is only showing the white 4g-as well as many of the surfs available right now.

I took the plunge on the 19th when the 8GB showed up on Amazon; received my fun new toy on the 21st. This thing is great! One of the things I really like about it is the screen. I can take the eee outside on the patio and actually use it, because the screen is very easy to see even in the sunlight. The fast boot is becoming addictive (when I boot my Thinkpad now, it seems to take forever in cmnparison.)

Might want to return it while you can. Asus is supposedly rolling out the 8.9" machine this week. If so, my order will be in the minute it's available. That'll fix the ONE COMPLAINT I have with it.

bigguyinpasadena Jan 2, 2008 12:43 pm

kanebear-is this the US rollout?
What is the price?
Thanks.

While I have been very happy with it, the one thing I have found that it doesnt do well is Powerpoint or Impress as the Open Office version of it is called. It isnt limited to the machine, however. The same presentation that gets all crapped up when converted to Impress from Powerpoint on the Asus gets equally and indentically crapped up when converted on a Dell Optiplex 740 with 4 gigs of RAM running RHE 5.0.

Has anyone here tried running Crossover Office on one?

Yep, there are some rumors of an 8.9" model perhaps on Jan 7th:

http://gizmodo.com/339234/next+gen-a...89+inch-screen

I'd love to get one of these. Of course, the problem is that they keep packing in more and more stuff (which I want), while at the same time the prices are going up and up. And I'm assuming that weight is going to be going up, too. It's going to get to the point where I can't justify buying one of the high-end EEEs based on price and weight, but I won't be able to justify buying one of the cheaper, lighter ones because it looks so weak in comparison. I hate technology.

What is the price?...

By reading the "more" direct news source in Chinese, provided in Doppy's post (i.e. http://news.chinatimes.com/CMoney/Ne...600570,00.html), it indicated more models would roll out after mid-January (08), possibly including the 8.9" models. I believe that's the timeframe for Taiwan market. The article stated the price ranges would still be less than $NTD 15,000 (roughly less than $460.00 USD). It doesn't sound "definite", since the article only refers to "according to the source".

I didn't research any further. kanebear probably has more info on this.

Thank you for the response and the translation.
I think I will wait for this.
At this pricepoint it is getting to the benefits of this machine versus a cheap laptop as you can find a good&cheap laptop for this price-but one that weighs far more and does not have the taveler appeal.
I think the Asus is the winner .
I will also get a little usb travel mouse to use with this-as I have read there are problems with the l/r cursor buttons.

I've had mine for about four weeks now and think it's great. It has been to Stockholm and Berlin and I deliberately chose hotels with free wi-fi to get the most out of it (I know, very sad!)

What do I like most:

1) Wifi picks up anything and connects without hassle!

2) Portability is second to none, it's so easy to transport and here in the UK where we have to remove laptops for the airport x-ray, they don't seem bothered about doing this with the eee.

3) It recognises usb devices like nothing I have ever seen - my film-full portable HD works easily as does my usb mini mouse and printer.

4) Skype works very well without the need for any additional equipment.

Where it could be better:

1) The scroll pad thingy buttons are temperamental to say the least. Sometimes they require a real hard push other times they work perfectly...so buy a mini usb mouse

2) I cannot connect using my blackberry as a modem - that's a real pain as wi-fi is in most places, I seem to end up in places where no wi-fi exists. If anyone knows how to connect up a mobile as modem, please let me know!

Overall, it's a great device but it won't be replacing my laptop. I'll just take whichever device suits me depending on where I'm going.

It's definite now but with a different timeframe (Taiwan market) and higher price quotes. Basically it says:

"After the 4G and 8G Linux models, Asus plans to roll out the 1st XP model (4G w/ Office-light and a mouse) by the end of January, right before Chinese New Year. Dut to these "add-on", the price will be more than NTD $13000 (i.e. > $400 USD). Ausu expects the XP model to be more popular than the earlier Linux ones.

The 8G XP model will roll out at a later time (note: didn't specify the release time). On top of the current 7" models, the future plan also includes 8.9" screen.

Eee is the first among it peers to adapt "XP-light". Due to the SSD spec (smaller capacity), Microsoft uses the "XP-light" (stripped down version of XP). OLPC and Classmate PC will adapt "XP-light" soon afterwards.
"

Don't know what's XP-light and Office-light though. However, by going with Microsoft, the price is shooting up for sure.

Thanks, I havent but that looks interesting. I will check that out. It doesnt list this version of Linux but i have a Red Hat Enterprise 5 machine, which they do support, that I could test it on. If that read the files well it would make it worth trying to put it on the Asus. Does anyone else have a suggestion for a Power Point replacement in Linux?

divemistressofthedark Jan 3, 2008 10:23 pm

(I'm assuming the thing is 100% non-Mac compatible, except for the one guy who hacked the hell out of it to install Leopard, right...?)

kanebear Jan 4, 2008 1:09 pm

Actually you don't hack the Eee at all to run Leopard. You just download the right install disc. ;)

The timeframe on the 8.9" isn't exact. I had bad info. Still... I'd wait unless you're ok with getting one now and replacing it in a short while. Heck I'll buy one just to get access to XP Lite! nLite can only do so much and Windows for Legacy PCs isn't available legally to mere mortals.

bigguyinpasadena Jan 4, 2008 2:36 pm

Kanebear have you seen XPlite?I have xp pro on my machine and am pretty comfie with it-although I do little to challenge the machine(the machine wins-always :D)
I was actually pretty hyped getting a chance to see linux since it seems to be really quick to load and does not have a lot of MS hurdles.

And we don't know what the timeframe is yet exactly,Asus may very well use CES to launch a bunch of new versions-it has happned before-so you might be right!
