Oops...

Just jumped in and took the google reference without checking the date... thanks for the note... and the comments on using the EEE PC. For me, small is in relation to a smartphone screen... since my main interest in mobile web access for email that will allow some travel without the "real" laptop. But the advice to check it in person is good... I'm hoping to see one soon at a MicroCenter store... but didn't know that Costco had them as well and will also try that... although I see that there isn't a price advantage in this case.

Not sure if you linked the wrong article, but that review is from 2001.

I think the Packard Bell x520 (or whatever) is a rebadged VIA Nanobook, from the looks of the casing and processor specs. You might be able to confirm that and then look for the reviews of the Nanobook.

FWIW, I had an EEE PC for a short period of time, and actually found it a bit TOO small. The trackpad was a little quirky and the trackpad buttons were a little hard to press. The system boot was quick, and everything else was pretty snappy including video playback of Divx files. But browsing the web in the low resolution left something to be desired, as you always had to flip it into fullscreen mode in firefox to get more screen real estate.

If you have the chance to try one out beforehand, try to do that first, otherwise try to get it from a place with a good return policy like Costco.

Review notes... EEE PC and Nanobook...

Took a bit of scrambling through a plethora of name changes... but here are some comments on the Packard Bell version of the Nanobook bought not long ago by a chap writing here... http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/ne...p?storyid=1030

He compares it by specs to the EEE PC although he didn't have an actual model.

Can't quite tell if this is on sale yet in U.S.... one article said WalMart at the end of the month but haven't checked a WalMart website.

None that I've seen yet.

<-<-<- waiting patiently

The heavy snows in China and the New Year holiday are going to slow down all the new EEE's apparently.

Just to clarify, Asus is a Taiwan-based company and Taiwan is not having any snow storm. ;)

Even though I am not sure how many Eees are shipped out from Asus's plants in China, I doubt their plants are all located in those snow-affected areas. I don't think the current snow in China should be a factor for Asus's production. As for Lunar New Year, I would think they'd factored in the holidays in the timeline already.

I had mentioned it in post #116, the "newer" models (such as 4G w/ mouse...etc) are supposed to be available in Taiwan around Lunar New Year. Since US market is usually about a month behind, I don't think you will see them in the US until (maybe) later this month. I haven't seen they announced the specific timeline for the larger-screen models though.

Prices are holding steady

I was hoping prices would have fallen by now-the only thing I am seeing are some open box discounts and a few used on amazon at no great savings. Not enough to risk no warrenty anyway.

Newegg(love them)did have a promo with free shipping and a sd chip included-if you got the pink 4g eee :p
I would have bit-but not for pink :D

Newegg has a black 4G Surf open-box for $323 - and according to customer service, you still get the full Asus warranty. How much cheaper do you want this little thing to be? $299 to $499 range for the available types is pretty good. PDA's and Smartphones are in this range, and this is a decent little email and web surfing laptop instead.

I'm probably getting one - I have an international trip coming up in about a month where a ligher laptop instead of my full one would be *really* nice (in addition to the likely chance that Customs will want to inspect it on the way back, and it would be cool to confuse them with "..., that's not Windows!")

I'm holding out for about 10 days prior, just in case the 8" ones make it over here before that :)

While I agree 8" LCD is better than 7" LCD, you are aware that the resolution is still going to be the same 800x480 on that model, right?

The rumored 8.9" LCD model should, allegedly per same rumor, have a slightly higher resolution. All with added cost defeating the point of the super low price ultra-portable.

Yes. More resolution would be nicer, but the bigger screen with the same low resolution would still be an improvement - I've got crud eyesight, and the big empty endges of the bezel seem wasteful.

Given that the choices right now are a super-low-price ultraportable, or a fairly pricy one, there's plenty of room to move up into the midrange.

If I could afford it for a second laptop/ultraportable, I'd love a Lifebook P1620. There are a few 4lb/12.1" models around $1000, and the some of the super-tiny UMPCs (split-thumboard "Origami" ones and the cool-but-probably-TOO-small Lifebook U810) also around $1000.

So if the new 8.9" one (to make a guess, 1024x600 "WSVGA") added say, $100 to the cost, it would still be at a pretty much unique price point.

Well, that I know of; if anyone knows of any decent inexpensive smaller-than-12" subnotebooks, I'd be curious to know about them.

Well, some day the Everex Cloudbook shows up (latest ship date is the 15th), it'll compete with the Eee. That's running Google's Linux variant and has a 30GB notebook drive (not SSD) plus 4-in-1 card reader. Still a 7" 800x480 screen though I'm sure there will be a revision for that as well eventually.

And a host of other companies have promised something in the same category. It's all a waiting game for now though.

Yup. Should be an interesting next year or couple of years.

Waranty?

Ok-all set up to finally get one of these from Newegg.com
They want $79 for a two year waranty-is this needed?
ASUS has a two year manufacturers(limited)warenty included.
I normally would not bother-but since this is a new item I am hesitant.

I just oirdered a EEE from Buy.com myself. Should get here next Thursday.

From reviews, the EEE seems a lot nicer than the Cloudbook, even with the Cloudbook's larger built-in storage.
