Yes you can. And it actually works quite well.

If Apple won't do a MBA Mini, what are the chances of Asus or a competitor, using the smallest Intel chips, bringing out a slimmer, lighter, MBA-style EEE competitor?

(Given the opportunity with Intel's competing small-PC platform and the propensity of companies to clone Apple designs in part or wholly).

I've only had my MBA out of its box since last night to charge the battery, have yet to really use it, but could see a market for a smaller (9"?) MBA clone. :)

How much?

When will they be available?

Will the first units be reliable, or is it better to wait a couple months til they shake out the start up woes?

Q2, about $100 more than the current models.

I wouldn't worry about any start up woes, they are usually pretty stable when they come out and provide upgrades for problems pretty swiftly.

Thanks, Scotty. I think it's worth $100 more to me to have the larger screen area.

Thanks, ScottC.

Which EEE would you recommend? The 9" version @ only $100 more sounds like it would be worth waiting for.

OK, you got my attention since a fair part of my bread and butter comes through PowerPoint presentations. Any details to send along on the "real problem" with the eeePC software?

All I did was open an existing presentation, change the working on a single slide title and save it to see if it would accept the change. So not much experience yet. Did note that the design I use (selected from the standard Microsoft package) was also present. Didn't seem to be a problem with the font used... Arial.

Should add that I tried the various "view" modes and they seemed to work.

Any experiences that will keep me (and others) from falling into a pit here are most appreciated.

A lot of my slides have either Excel charts or Excel tables embedded in them. At least in the way that I, and the people who work for me and make some of the slides do this, it generates defective tables that show the table form, but none of the data within is readable, it is just black blobs. That is why I am interested in trying to run XP on a thumb drive and put my presentations on that. Or make the tables in a different way I suppose but I dont know how. Any thoughts on XP on a thumb drive or SDHC card?

Bestbob Mar 3, 2008 9:21 pm

Thanks for the Excel points... I don't use those in my presentations... text and screen shots of web sites and those seemed to come out OK.

No thoughts on XP on SDHC or thumb... that's a question for Super Scott.

But good luck with the Excel challenge.

I should add that this isnt an Asus issue. It is an Open Office issue from what I can tell. It does the same thing to the same presentations when run on a Dell Optiplex 745 with RedHat Enterprise running on it.

Screen resolution on the new eee 9" models will be 1024x600, according to the Engadget article below, which includes photos of the bigger and brighter screens.

That is a big improvement over the current 800x480 versions. 1024x600 is surprisingly usable.

Is there any difference in keyboard size between the 7" and 9"?

Amaran Mar 4, 2008 10:33 am

Hi all! :)

I'm thinking about getting an eee myself as well. Just heard of the new version with bigger screen, 1 GB RAM and larger HD which costs 100 EUR more than the basic version here in Germany. As I'd use the eee only for a little typing, Skype, internet and maybe e-mail when travelling I'm not sure if it's worth the extra 100 EUR for the bigger version. Is it doing fine with 512 MB RAM and the smaller screen?
Unfortunately I couldn't try one in a "real" shop (seems to be sold out everywhere!) so there are only online shops left ;)

Thanks for sharing your experiences! :)

Keep in mind that in addition to being more expensive (and Asus nearly doubled it's promised price for the original model), the new model is larger and has a shorter battery life.

Doubled it's promised price, but still a deal for the cheapest model at $299, for what it's intended use is.

The new model isn't larger, really. See Engadget comparison.

No hard evidence but Asus claims new model achieves similar battery time as original models - 2.5 to 3 hours.
