Also released in Australia this week with XP.
That's $80 extra for the XP license.

I play the movies off an SD card... no problems...

I was doing some testing on my (new :D) 2G Surf for video and USB/SD throughput. I am mildly disappointed that the default device driver for video playback is X11. Video was rather choppy at this setting...

Media Player -> Options -> Preferences. General options, General tab, Output drivers, Video should be changed from x11 to xv.

FYI, here is some news on a slimmed-down version of Windows XP for EEE
(this article was widely quoted this week, so here is the link and the quote):

IN DEPTH: Official Eee PC with XP
So just how good (or how bad) is the little laptop when it comes pre-loaded with XP? [APC]

Asus is prepping a special edition Eee PC that will be preloaded with a cut-down version of XP which is expected to be available within the next eight weeks.

Emmanuele Silanesu, National Retail Manager for ASUSTeK Australia, told apcmag

“we’ve been working with Microsoft on a special condensed version of XP which has just passed the R&D tests this week”.
The pared-back image, which includes the Microsoft Works suite and will be based on Windows XP Home with SP3,
“will be approximately 1.5-1.8GB in total depending on Windows updates”

Anyone knows where to get the cheapest 4G Eee PC? I saw a $399 at newegg.com. Is there any site selling cheaper than this one?

When I looked a few weeks ago, I found places I've never heard of selling them for less with a Google Products search. I bought mine from BestBuy.com for $399 plus tax and shipping.

Nice review of the Eee 900 : http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebo...-Eee-PC-900/p1

20gb! Nice.

Who has a current EEE and is looking to upgrade to the EEE 900?
Will the larger screen (& more practical desktop res.) be the main incentive?

What about the new wave of wannabEEEs with Intel's Atom CPU?

I'm interested in the better screen resolution but am undecided on how long to wait.

(The article linked above is a good read. I also had a Psion [series 3].
It is good to get the musings of someone familiar with a really useful subnotebook writing tool!)

The 900 sounds like it could be full fledged notebook replacement if only you could make the battery last longer. If there's a way to increase battery life without increasing the form factor I'd be sold. It's gotta last at least a transcon's worth of office application use. I can get two full-length movies out of my Fujitsu with average screen brightness.

If $399 is the cheapest then I might wait for the 9" with 20GB instead. I just wonder Asus initially priced or said the price for the 2G surf was $199, I wonder why it became $299.

I don't recall ever seeing $199 price tag.

When I read Asus release back in October 2007, all the models were priced around $250 or higher. Now the demands are higher and US dollars are weaker, you can do the math...;)

Saw earlier today a review showing 5/12 as the official US release of the $900, and $549 for the 12gb w/ Windows or 20gb w/ Linux (although trying to find that again, I saw another saying the 20gb w/ Linux was an extra $20.)

Getting a little pricy, but compared to other subnotebooks, this is still a very sweet deal. I decided to take a pass on the 701 right now, but am still undecided on whether to get the 900 or wait for the Atom-based models that are supposed to be coming later this year.

Actually, if you Google "Asus $199" you'll see 100's of sources where it was indeed originally going to be a $199 machine (on the lowest configuration).

Yes, that was once the "projected" sales price.

However, when the products did hit the market in Taiwan back in October 2007 (and later in the US), none of the models was tagged below $200. At that time, the currency exchange rate was more favorable, around 33:1 (TWD:USD). That's why I referenced the media source with actual price tags.

I think the same thing will happen to the 900 models. The "projected" price was maybe $100 more than the 701. But the sale price seems to be heading toward the $550-$600 ballpark.
