I'm a tad hesitant to rebuild to the kernel on the off chance any Asus updates (I assume they'll have some of their own eventually?) won't play nicely, and it's a moot point for now since I'm still using 512mb. I'll bump to 1gb eventually. But my question is what specifically you were unhappy with regarding Beryl? I thought it was pretty decent after turning off all the shadow crap that doesn't work right, and figured doubling (or quadrupling in your case) would rid the thing of some of the sluggishness. I know the built in video shared memory has a negative impact but it seemed livable to me.

Primarily it was just some quirkiness in operation (text disappearing, windows not minimizing properly, clipping issues, etc). I think it was my config more than anything else. I've been noodling about perhaps more than I should. ;) I haven't noticed a performance difference with 2gb vs. 1gb but HAVE noticed some instability so I'm likely going to just reimage the thing and start over. That'll likely cure the issues I had.

Was this a sale or was it the "4G Surf" model vs the "4G" model? Newegg carries both. I think the Surf has shorter battery life and doesn't have the built-in webcam.

I've been thinking about getting one but I want to see whether I should wait a little while for a sale...

Saw the cheaper-stripped down surf for $259 yesterday....waiting for the regular one to fall in price also.

I didn't know there were two versions ... I'll be getting one for my brother in the next month or two so I'll wait a bit if you all think the price may drop :)

MIRC / Internet Relay Chat clients

Anyone know any IRC type software I can get for my eee? Have tried searching Google but havent found any that work...

Pidgin has simple IRC support. Nice and easy, like IRC is supposed to be. ChatZilla for Firefox is pretty decent too.

I saw a lady in a cafe here in Luang Prabangh, Laos using one to hit the "free internet wireless" (sic) and happily surfing away. Amazing how fast and far it has traveled, since I thought we were in the back of beyond, only to find this new little toy already here and in action!

Who is waiting for the new version? I suppose that is a good time to buy the obsolete model or the new version which may (or may not) have a larger screen option.

Hopefully Apple will have its own MacBook nano; if not, then I hope someone gets OSX fully functioning on it.

It's still out of stock in Oz (at least at Myer, the sole official outlet). :td:

Actually there're quite a few more than that! 2GB Surf, 4GB Surf (no camera and no memory slot on the SURF models, but they're cheaper), 4GB, 8GB and the 16gb model that we in the states don't get yet. Of course, there's then the color choice for each model of white or black.

And pink and light green!

Part of the point is that it doest have a hard drive. Or a bigger screen. By the time the suggested changes are done it becomes either a $4000 Sony Utralight or a $500 Dell that weighs 8 pounds. It is neither and those other options are alreay available.

I'd still like to see their 10" model - the 7" screen doesn't fill the whole space that is available in that half of the clamshell. Sell it for say $600 vs. the $400 for the 7" and I bet they would both sell like hotcakes.

I agree that it would be useful if the size stayed the same. Those speakers beside the screen sound pretty good though.

We could call it the "Foleo"...

I had a little extra money after doing my expenses this month-and I was sooooo close to buuying one of these from newegg.com
I am just one of those folks that likes to see if all the bugs are worked out before I buy. Also If the 4g model drops to $250 when the 8g model becoms widely available-well that could have been used on a milage run and I would be upset.
J&R is only showing the white 4g-as well as many of the surfs available right now.
