The only place I had trouble was cloning the drive. I couldn't do it from within XP. I booted off the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and used SelfImage... worked perfectly!

Wow kanebear you are really smart!Where did you learn about workarounds like this?

I just received my Galaxy Black PC 4G from mwave.com and I have to admit, I am super impressed. In about 2 minutes, it was up a running, hooked up flawlessly to our office wifi and went right into Firefox. From there to Flyertalk, it was quick!. In fact, I am typing messge this on it. The keyboard is small, but no so small that it is that hard to use, especially if you have used small keyboards before.

For $400, what a Christmas gift. It is no wonder they are hard to find, world-wide.

Make sure you check out the unofficial www.eeeuser.com forums and WIKI.

Definitely install the Fuller Fullscreen extension, and hit F11 to get rid of everything but webpage content. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4650

Skype 2.0 Beta does support video (the installed Skype doesn't).

I see that they are bringing out an 8GB-but that still seem small to me.
What do you think?

It's not designed as a storage system and I wouldn't say it's a replacement for a tried and true workhorse laptop. SSD media isn't nearly as cheap as magnetic media either. You can slip in SDHC cards, most USB flash media and plenty of portable, small USB hard drives.

But with the apps installed, plus space for plenty more, the 4GB disk should be used just for running apps. Store regularly read, written and deleted data on memory cards or external media.

Arizona-guy has it: the SSD is only for software. Since the SDHC reader is so handy and the SD card fits flush there's no reason not to have one in at all times. You can find reasonable 16gb SDHC cards now... my 8gb is in halves. XP in one 4gb partition, data/music/whatever in the other. Once I find a reasonably priced 16gb SDHC I'll shift over to that and expand accordingly. But for now, it does what it needs to. If you need more space than that, a 1.8" 60-100gb external drive (Apricorn makes 'em) is perfect for media.

This is one of the first devices I can say 100% is better suited to Linux than Windows. The 'dummy' interface doesn't work for me but in full use mode it's very very quick and amazingly capable for such a small machine. If they roll out a 9" machine with 1280x600 display I will finally be in heaven.

I've enjoyed reading this thread thus far. Before today, I hadn't heard of the Asus EEE. Now I want to buy one. ^

bigguyinpasadena Nov 26, 2007 2:44 pm

I agree Jeeves-they sound just fantastic for travelers.

UPS guy just left ... my EEE is charging :)

Thank you! With limited real estate, I installed the Fuller Fullscreen and F11 does make quite a difference!
I wish I had more time to play.

I would also highly recommend the MediaWrap firefox extension. Should be on the bookmarks already. It'll encapsulate ActiveX into plugins supported by Firefox. You can watch video on sites with ActiveX-embedded content.

I've also got TheGIMP (much better photo editor) installed as well as VLCPlayer - a good media player. This combined with flash drives from Black Friday deals and my eee running in "advanced mode" I'm set for my next trip!

This thing actually is a replacement for my Dell Axim x51v PDA that some nice young Romanian children stole from me (along with one of my hearing aids!) on the streets of Bucharest last March. I loved that thing too, not sure which device I prefer now.

8 GB model

Dynamism has them for pre-ordering. $499 with shipment in mid-late December.

Does it come with Evolution and the Evolution exchange connector? Has anyone who has one yet looked a this? Thanks.

ArizonaGuy Nov 26, 2007 10:46 pm

I don't find the bump to 8GB and 1GB RAM to be worth the additional $100. It runs fine on 512mb. OS and apps most people need fit in less than 4GB, and then you make use of SDHC or USB storage - better for the lifespan of the internal drive. Plus, you can bump your 512MB up if you are willing to void the warranty.

It does not have Evolution installed. But it's a Xandros Linux distro, and Evolution works on that. You can apt get Evolution and plugins, etc. But when another person started it up, the config pages wouldn't fit on screen. That's a minor problem in that a lot of apps aren't easy to use at 800x480. Connecting to an external monitor and doing the config may solve that, however.

For Linux probably not. I have an old Sony Vaio 505 that I may try running Ubuntu on. Linux needs a lot less of a system to run. I suspect the extra RAM in particular will make an enormous difference for those running XP however. Thanks for the info on Evolution. I may fiddle with the Vaio first but I fear it is just a matter of time before I spring for an eee ;)

VNC server will run on Linux. That's the best way to configure things like this as VNC can spit out a desktop at any resolution you choose. So use VNC viewer on your desktop at any resolution you please to connect to the Eee and configure away. I haven't installed it yet but will do so later today and then will post a tutorial. I swear there's already a desktop sharing service installed but I can't find it.

Someone posted a walkthrough of how to make Thunderbird fully visible on the eee, and it's in the Wiki of eeeuser.com now. It was mostly just the simplicity of downloading and installing a compact theme - LittleBird, specifically. Plus some additional tweaks to files to change font size and whatnot. Works beautifully, I was able to actually see and configure it to store mail folders on my SD card
