The 1 GB Ram/8GB Hard drive version is now available.
For those who own the Asus, is the extra $100 worth it?

LOL - the "instant gratification" may be worth the extra $100 ;)

It came today. It is way cool. I activated the advanced mode already. What really was stunning to me was that I got the damn thing to work with my Verizon EvDO USB modem. Now I need to get Evolution, a Cisco VPN client and ssh running on it.

Have people tried putting the Debian packages on it? It seems to be needed for Evolution but there are a lot of warnings about it. Any experience here? Thanks.

Debian packages generally work. Take a look at the forums on www.eeeuser.com and you'll find lots of good discussion on all things eee.

Though the 8GB SSD would be nice, I'm happy with the ability to use USB and SDHC storage on my 4G. I also understand the 8G does not have simple access to the memory so an upgrade (to 2GB) would not be a simple task. Does yours have this?

there was a "sale" at newegg for I think 359 vs 399 recently, not sure but it might still be there.

Well, Evolution is working. This is a great little device.

Ordered mine yesterday; will arrive tomorrow. Can't wait!

My Thinkpad x60s may be jealous, because it crashed with a hardware problem today.

HD Upgrade?

I just saw one of these in Hong Kong. Way Cool.

Would like bigger screen and hd.

Is it possible to put a non-flash drive (say, 80 g) into this thing?

Nope. Well, depends, but any solution involves lots of modification - it's not simple plug & play, and the original SSD is pretty much staying there. Apparently Japan only (so far) is getting a version with a 16GB SSD and Windows XP pre-loaded.

Use USB or SDHC storage. For what it's designed for, there's not a need for anything larger to check email, surf the web or run the other apps installed.

Are prices as good or better in Singapore?

A trip in January may give me the opportunity to buy it there, but then it's a question of whether the warranty is international or only through the country of sale.

If Apple doesn't have a slim/flash MacBook coming out in January, I'll be interested to see if the EEE PC is cheaper in SIN than Oz!

(BTW have you read of anyone getting Tiger or another MacOS running fully and normally on the EEE PC?)

Part of the point is that it doest have a hard drive. Or a bigger screen. By the time the suggested changes are done it becomes either a $4000 Sony Utralight or a $500 Dell that weighs 8 pounds. It is neither and those other options are alreay available.

Download the Uphuck release of OSX from some of the 'usual sources' (think Jolly Roger). The Eee uses integrated graphics which OS X is just fine with... someone's already installed OSX happily on it. I believe the internal WiFi is even seen as an Airport Express.

Incidentally, I rebuilt the kernel and now have Linux seeing the full 2gb. I installed Beryl but wasn't happy with it. I'll try again when I have more time.

My only wish would be an 8.9" screen. The HDD you can use via USB.
