Interesting question. I performed a test:

Using Shure e3c headphones, it did exactly what you wish. Sound through the headphones and talk through the on-board mike.

Using Bose QC2s, it didn't work so well. When the call arrived the music stopped with a GSM signaling noise in the headphones. During the call there was only a crackling/popping noise in the headphones, the person on the other end of the line could hear what I was saying.

Thanks matcchi...

So when I do get the iPhone, I can connect it to the car stereo using an aux input cable (as one does to an iPod), and if a call was to come through, I could listen to it on the car audio and talk using the in built mic...

Thats some money saved on a bluetooth adaptor...

(should work in theory... or am I missing something)

What were they thinking (if anything)?
You just need a proper BMW

So why won't AT&T now unlock iPhones? They have us locked into contracts that assure them a profit.

I would wait a little bit and see if they change their policy on this. For any other phone they have locked to their system, they usually let you unlock it after about 3 months.

I charged it using my wife's 2006 330xi last night. I got a message saying it wasn't compatible, which is true -- you can't use it as an iPod hooked up to her system, just like the mini-dock I have on my desk. No clue why. But the charging mechanism worked just fine.

Why don't car stereo makers just put USB ports on their products?

That is what IFE makers are starting to do.

Of course, they'd had to do more to support iPhone and iPod beyond USB charging.

There's probably royalties to Intel as well as costs for USB silicon.

Here's the (stupid) reason why. http://gizmodo.com/5029844/simple-ha...phone-chargers

UK iPhone

UK readers will be familiar with Martin Lewis, money saver extraordinaire. His site has a guide to saving money on the lifetime contract cost of the iPhone on O2, including a loophole I wasn't aware of.

Now we know! The iPhone 3G is made from recycled Power Mac G4 cubes!

Careful - someone on FT probably still has a Cube running FT (even HOM!)

As someone once famously said, 'black don't crack'.

Did they unlock the 2g iPhone after 3 or more months of service?

^ Duly noted. Now the challenge is where to get my hands on one..... CPW Canary Wharf only have 8GB in stock - think we'll go for 16 if poss.
