I guess the nearly 2 1/2 hours I spent waiting for this phone (I was initially told an hour wait when I joined in 
) was worth it after all. I was just back in one of the Apple stores here in downtown Portland and indeed, no iPhones to be had, perhaps, for awhile.

a question for the current iphone (both 1st & 2nd gen) owners.....
does the iphone have the capability to "password protect" the phone on power up? example: my current phone (nokia6131) allows me to have a "pin code" to be entered on power up thus preventing unauthorized use (very helpful if leaving the phone in your hotel room to charge-as long as it's off, then housekeeping, maintenance, etc can't use the phone when they see it sitting on the table as they will need the pin to have it turn on)
if the iphone has this feature, how simple is it to set up-nokia's are a breeze: settings->security->pin code on/off.

Yep, super easy to setup a 4-digit pin.
Settings->General->Passcode Lock->enter 4 digits (x 2)->Select "when" (Immediately, After 1, 5, 15, minutes, or after 1 hour or 4 hours.
You also have the option to enable/disable an SMS preview which will show a preview of an incoming text when the passcode is enabled.

it sounds like what you're describing is a keypad lock where you need to enter the pin to unlock the phone in order to use it and that pin will become active after a given pre-set time period.
my nokia has that feature but i don't use it as it's too much of a pita to enter the pin but i do like is that once the phone has been turned off, you need the pin code to "activate" the phone and make it useable (hence my reference to leaving the turned off phone in the hotel room to charge while i'm out for a bit)

no, this is not a sim password but a phone password as my sim does not have a pw but when i put in my friend's sim to confirm that my phone was in fact unlocked, his sim had a pw so i had to enter the phone pw when i powered up the phone and then the sim pw

I do not believe there is any way to do this as you describe. The best workaround I could come up with is to enter a lock code when you leave the room and remove it when you return.
As mentioned above, you can enter a SIM PIN, but the only way to get into the mode where the SIM PIN is required is to completely power-down the phone. This works, but you then have to wait through the boot process when you want to use it again.
When I was playing with the SIM PIN, I managed to PUK lock my phone.
Thankfully I had previously printed out my PUK unlock code from the AT&T website. -whew-.

I use a SIM Pins with my iPhone and you don't have to power cycle the phone to activate it. You just stick a SIM in and the unlock screen pops up. Quite easy.
I should use a screen lock password, but it seems to be far too cumbersome to have to enter it 50 times a day.
What I need, is a one-button way to lock the iPhone. I would expect someone has written an app to do that, right?

Yep, but I don't want a timer. I just want to lock it whenever I leave it sitting around other people. A one-button password lock would be nice.

From what I have read, the iPhone Headphones have a microphone inculded in the set up that lets you answer calls while listening to music, without having to take the headphones off.
If I was using a pair of non-iPhone headphones (without a mic built in the assembly), can I still continue to answer the call using with the headphones plugged in, and use the phone mic to talk?

My review of the new 3G:
- Bluetooth is the car is horrible. There is an unbearable echo, apparently widely reported.
-I hope you sit down for this one: iPhone DOES NOT RECHARGE IN A BMW. Or in several other types of car, for that matter.
What were they thinking (if anything)?
