It's a rumor. And it's only "blacklisting" in the sense that they won't do warranty repairs on it. Something I wouldn't expect anyway with a hacked handset.

tax
hi,
a friend bought a iphone yesterday and told me that it is 399USD + tax...
is it possible to get the tax back on purchase? he was told that its state tax? or federal tax i dont remember and you cant get it back.
why shouldnt one get all tax back if taking the iphone out of the country?
i am going to LA this week, portland, sacramento etc. where is it recommended to buy the phone, does the tax varies ? (this would be only if i cant get a full tax refund.

I believe Oregon doesn't have sales tax.
So Portland would be tax free.
To be sure, I'd call the Portland store where you plan to purchase it.
In CA, the sales tax would be about $25.
That's like 12 quid to UK citizens or about 15 Euro.

Portland (OR) is tax free
I go to Vancouver, WA (other side of the river) for work occasionally, and will time big ticket, but carry-on'able purchases, for those trips.

It seems as though everyone with an unlocked iPhone is screwed.
"CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple has
discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs
available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's
software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming
permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update
is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update,
containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
(http://www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from
installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make
unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their
iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent
inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not
covered under the iPhone's warranty."

The updater is volunatry, so unless you are stupid, you won't run it till reports come back from other users. I'm sure the minute the updater hits the web the hackers will be working on getting it "fixed" for the patched phones.

Again, for the sake of form if nothing else, Apple has to appear to be protecting their lucrative deals with carriers, even if people buying the iPhone mainly to unlock it brings them more revenues.
