Those on this thread might be interested to know that Google just saw T-Mo's bet and raised...

They are now offering Full-Speed "free" data roaming in their 135 countries worldwide on Project Fi... with no end-date defined. I just got back from India where that would have been super useful. This weekend I'm headed to London with my T-Mo sim. I love this new T-Mo promotion and hope they expand it to all covered countries indefinitely.
If they don't, a switch to Project Fi is starting to look very attractive.

I hope TMob does it too but it may be tougher since they have way more customers than Google Fi since that service is limited to a couple of Nexus phones.

The thing is, a lot of these roaming partners actively market and target travelers for short term data use so you wouldn't think they'd just give roaming data to TMob customers for nothing.

Then again, EU is suppose to have free roaming by the middle of next year so maybe the economics of mobile data are changing.

Tmo may have more users, but the percentage of them to whom internationally significantly (outside of FTers) will still be fairly small I'd wager.

I'm sure there is some reciprocity going on to for some of these agreements.

Yup. It worked as of a few months ago and you also get sms, just no voice. I think I activated mine with a tablet (Nexus 7) IMEI? But it was almost always used in an android/iPhone.

Thanks. It's strange how I've read conflicting reports. It works for some people and not for others. Maybe I'll do this in a T-Mobile store instead of online assuming the clerk has no problem with it (online T-Mobile chat said it should be fine).

I would never rely on these free roaming deals unless I get it in writing that I will not be charged. I don't want to come back and be presented with a $10,000 bill because of some misunderstanding or fine print.

Easier just to get a local SIM, they are cheap.

Here is a question about Project FI, it says $10/gb internationally but is that per country and per billing period? Say during the billing period I visited Thailand, Indonesia and Singalore and used data there and collectively did not exceed 1gb, is it $30 or just $10?

I guess if you're visiting multiple countries getting a local SIM isn't that convenient.

I understand your point, but the offer reads, "If you're not in a country where international roaming is included, you'll be able to use calling and messaging services, but data will be turned off by default." Wouldn't you have to override this to start getting charged?

If you go to My Tmobile and long in - then click on "profile" on the upper right of the screen. Then click on "Blocking" on the left. Make sure the switch for "Block International Charge Roaming" is set to on.

Wife and me on Google Fi, and she had good luck with it 2 months ago in Italy and Barcelona, but some data connection problems in some other cities in Spain. Probably teething pains getting it all hooked together. Take the "free" part with a grain of salt. I think there is no surcharge for the data, but you still pay $10/GB just as in the US. New part is the higher speed data that you supposedly get now depending on the carrier you're on in each country.

FWIW, I've been using Tmobile's free high speed Europe data for the last week and have $0.00 on my billing/usage page. I did take a screen shot of chat window before leaving to confirm details.

One thing that's very frustrating, though, is that I'm getting next to nothing in the Scottish Highlands. I'm here for 4 more nights and nada. I'll see one or two dots of service then nothing will load. Nearly got lost as I'd gotten used to relying on phone for info!

And, just like that, I'm getting blazing speeds in my little area of Sweden with Tele2 now. Best so far is 33 down/18 up; 8/8 when I'm inside.

I noticed the Simple Choice tablet plan is only $20 plus tax.

Is it possible to get a tablet plan nano SIM and use it in an iPhone? In other words, use it for free data in other countries without text/voice service? An online chat with T-Mobile says yes. The only recent discussion I saw about this was several years ago. For example, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/21704501-post179.html

That was one that I originally put into a phone and it did not work. Couldn't activate. I then put it in the ipad and it worked fine. So I think I can say from this experience that a tablet SIM doesn't work on a phone.

The SIM comes in three sizes (all in the same package), including nano, FYI.

T-Mobile definitely offers data-only plans for iPhones (and all smartphones, really). See this link for info...

I don't think T Mobile can be blamed , mobile data is hopeless in the Highlands Unless I am somewhere sizeable ( local standards ) like Fort William I am fortunate to see GPRS on both Vodafone and 3 - LTE in our dreams only..

Cheers , Steve

The locals say EE or O2 are great. I can get EE but it is useless. Opens half a webpage then quits.

Anyone have any experience with BingeOn and tethering to an appletv?

Thanks

No, but I used it with chromecast and it worked (data didn't count)so I suspect the same with apple tv.
