Droid vs. iPhone

Ditching the BlackBerry and moving to either a Droid or iPhone. Weighing the pros/cons of each device and doing exhaustive research online. I thought I would see what the FT phone of choice was. I am debating between the Samsung Galaxy II or iPhone 5. Curious to hear the thoughts of fellow travelers.

Since we can be certain of the Galaxy S II's specs, with its excellent screen and processing power, I would say it is the superior choice if you intend to buy soon. I believe it to be an excellent phone. I have never used Android, but I have never heard any serious complaints. Your carrier will be the deciding factor. If you want to use Verizon then you can forget the S II, as they will not be introducing it on the network. Your choices for Verizon would be to either wait for the iPhone 5, or wait for a device with specs similar to the S II, such as the Nexus Prime. If you have Sprint, T Mobile, or AT&T then the S II would be my choice.

I hope this information was helpful.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; U; CPU OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I have an Android phone, an HTC Droid incredible 2, and an iPhone 4. Both are nice. If I had to pick just one I wouldn't even think about it for second; it would be the iPhone.

Thanks for the input. I am actually stuck with AT&T for better or worse!

Business or personal?

If biz, I'd keep the BB as a virtual keyboard just doesn't cut it.

If personal, well, I prefer Android as there's tons more free & useful apps, easily unlockable (for most phones), easily allows you to install apps from "external" sources, and custom ROMS (if you know what you're doing).

They both have their pros and cons. I have both iphone4 and HTC inspire that I swap out every other week or so. As for customizing, tweaking the options, etc. the HTC wins, howeveer, as for ease of use and smoothness, it's the iphone hands down. All the apps just work on the iphone, period! While on the inspire, some of the apps are just so so. Heck! My kids (8 and 10 yrs) and wife can even get around on the iphone with ease. Not so on the inspire.

ewww the Ford -v- Chevy, Coke -v- Pepsi question
Sadly 15-20 min in the store on each device isn't going to answer a months long or even a 2 year long commitment question.
It seems everyone has an iPhone/Droid so support is almost always a step away. Both phones have spotty exchange support though IMHO the iPhone has better 3rd party support for exchange. Of course nothing beats a WinMo phone for exchange support...
Geek factor IMHO is what drives people to Droids, as already mentioned you can mod your Droid 9 ways to Sunday. All or most of which unlocks and un 'brands' the phone. Yeah there is a lack of 'fart' apps on the Droid but the Apple App store still smokes the amazon and Google app store. Granted Amazon does give away a free paid app a day A nice thing with the Droid is most roms include a wifi app to 'share' your phones 'internet' connection free of charge. We won't get into the ethics or legalities of this as it is like asking someone about religion, politics, BBQ or sweet/un-sweet tea

In the end both phones are great phones and you can't go wrong with either one.

The phone is actually for both business and personal. Not having a keypad was probably the biggest (and only concern) that I have from switching from the BlackBerry. The internet is slower than dialup in 1996. Awful.

Great insight, thank you. I have an iPad now and there are only a handful of apps that I use regularly and I am sure that they will be available on the Droid.

I went from the Palm Treo 6xx to the Original iPhone, had no issues with the virtual keyboard, actually typed faster on the virtual.
Stayed with the iPhone(2 generations) till the Droid came out. Made the jump back to a physical keyboard and hated it! Granted it isn't the best keyboard to begin with. Thankfully the virtual keyboard was there.
Now with Swype (or other swipe keyboards) I could never use a physical keyboard, I think I'd get 'BB thumb' and lose about 100 WPM in speed :P
Just food for though, 'swipe' keyboards on a virtual keyboard are incredibly fast and accurate.

I do like Swype on my Droid X, but if you really like a physical keyboard (as a friend of mine does) you'll have to go Android.

A friend demonstrated swype to me last week. I had no idea that this technology even existed. The voice recognition on his droid was amazing also.

One thing that keeps me away from Apple products in general is the stupid non standard charging/data cable. Most if not all Android phones use mini or micro usb and I can use the same cable for my mp3 player, kindle, or gps and don't have to
worry about bringing the right cable.

I am a backpacker so having a standard cable is huge to me. If I have to bring a cable for my kindle and a different one for my phone I just bumped up my pack weight by an ounce or so that could have been invested in a Snickers bar that could power me up the mountain.

I even found a iPod on the street the other day, but I don't have a cable so I can't recharge it and I really don't care enough to buy one. Plus the thought of having iTunes clogging up my computer makes me feel icky.

I just use my iphone as a phone, Kindle and music player. One cable. If I have an iPad with me as well, much better for reading than the phone of course, I can use the same cable. I do have an Android phone as well so i need a second cable for that.
