Farmers denied compensation for ruined crop; schools run dry

AS THE drought crisis continues - school pupils go short of drinking water and farmers in various areas risk growing seasonal rice, despite a dim prospect they'll get water supplies any time soon.

Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula yesterday said Agriculture Minister Peetipong Phuengbun na Ayutthaya would propose measures to aid drought-affected farmers in a meeting of economic ministers tomorrow - although they would not receive a Bt1,000 per rai compensation money handout.

This has definitely been a very "unrainy" rainy season so far. Lotta wind, not much water.

Bangkokians told to brace for brackish tap water if there are no rains in 30 days

Households and businesses in Bangkok were told to brace for brackish water from their water taps if there are not enough rains in the next 30 days to replenish water at major reservoirs which is the main source of water to push push back the invasion of sea water.

Mr Thanasak Wattanathana, acting governor of Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, disclosed Wednesday that the MWA had already cut the tap water production at Bangkhan plant from a normal 3.9 million cubic metres per day to 3.6 million cubic metres/day.

The cutback, he said, has resulted to weakening of water pressure periodically.

Govt seeks solutions to torrid drought

A SERIES of measures will be adopted to ensure that the country has enough water resources at least until April next year, including a provision for 500 groundwater wells in drought-hit provinces.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday chaired a meeting of economic ministers that also approved four urgent measures to cope with the drought.

These measures include a further delay in the rice crop to July or August, a switch to crops that consume less water, a switch to multiple crops and a debt payment suspension for farmers in affected areas.

Texting student falls onto BTS tracks

A teen girl distracted by her smartphone fell onto the tracks at BTS Krung Thonburi in front of an oncoming train this morning, witnesses said.

The crowd of waiting commuters erupted in panic at about 8:30am when the train came to an emergency stop as it entered the station. Guards were seen pointing under the train when suddenly a teen girl appeared to climb out from under the train, causing everyone to scream, according twitter user @MissMikan.

The girl was seen playing with her smartphone before stepped forward and falling onto the tracks, said @Am2NineP. The unidentified girl seemed to be okay, but a photo of her iPhone left for dead on the tracks was also snapped by a witness.

The latest update was that Skytrain staff were performing first aid on her, and she was moving her arms.

Tap-water services hit by drought

The Nation June 29, 2015 1:00 am

Ten provincial water outlets plus branches in east Bangkok affected

ONGOING drought is threatening the delivery of tap-water services with impacts felt in both urban and rural zones.

"Our Bang Khen facility has lowered its tap-water production and distribution since last month. The move means weaker water flow during some periods of a day particularly in eastern Bangkok and (adjacent) Samut Prakan province," Metropolitan Water-works Authority (MWA) governor Thanasak Watanathana said the other day.

Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) governor Ratana Kitchawan also disclosed that 10 of her authorities' branches had already experienced shortage of raw water.

Yes, the water situation is starting to look dire. There is not enough flow in the Chao Phraya river so salt water is coming up the river and getting into the treatment facilities, which can't handle it. If we don't get a lot of rain soon there will be problems.

It is weird that there have been no official efforts to restrict usage. Oh well, Thainess.

Transpac - Is it possible that there is a call for water conservation, but it it is not well distributed or misunderstood by the Expat community in Thailand? If in fact this drought is so dire, I have difficulty believing that no one is cautioning the general public.

All my Thai neighbors were washing their cars yesterday, watering all their plants and washing down the weekly accumulations of muck with massive amounts of water per usual over the weekend. I haven't seen any water conservation appeals on Thai TV.

It's just not in the nature of Thais to deal with problems proactively; better to wait, seed the clouds, appeal to the spirits, or

"...to entice the rain gods to drop their load on them.
The sculpture, erected....."

Humorous.

Aside from the that the woman is labeled as Ee Fon which is odd because the term ee is only used as an informal friendly designator. Considering the lack of rain this year they might have chosen a better, more honorific, term.

No water for farming

Chao Phraya River resources to be used only for tap water and to sustain ecology; government mulling emergency decree

AMID FALLING water levels in the Chao Phraya River, water distribution will be halted for the agricultural sector from today, the Royal Irrigation Department said, adding all water will be allocated for domestic use and to sustain the ecology.

The Water Watch and Monitoring System for Warning Centre revealed the measure to save the scarce water supply in the Chao Phraya River basin. Of the total 18 million cubic metres of water discharged every day, 5 million cubic metres will be used for tap-water production, while the remaining 13 million cubic metres will be to sustain the ecology and resist salt water invasion.
