A new law went into effect NYE so that if a cop stops you for any reason while you're driving you can be required to take a "drunk test". If you refuse, you will be assumed to be drunk and arrested. Similar to laws that exist all over the US. Only applies to drivers.

Wow 1000B fine to avoid the test - no wonder that became the option of choice. I bet that 1000 would get you out of most stuff anyway as long as there wasn't a collision.

Yeah, that's an amount clearly aimed at Thais. For most farang, I think it would easily be worth 1,000 THB just to walk away from the whole thing.

Thailand to celebrate close relations with North Korea

"The military junta is preparing to hold a celebration to mark the 40th anniversary of Thailand’s and North Korea's diplomatic relations while North Korea has proposed that Thailand opens an embassy in its capital.

Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krue-ngam welcomed Mun Song Mo, Ambassador of North Korea, yesterday morning at Government House as the two countries aim to strengthen ties, according to a report on Thailand's official government website.

North Korea proposed stronger economic cooperation between the nations and suggested Thailand opens an embassy in Pyongyang to benefit future Thai investors in North Korea and foster cultural exchange.

Wisanu said he has acknowledged the proposal, which will be discussed in several government sectors. In the meantime, he will assign a related organization to organize an event to celebrate their relationship.

Wisanu also thanked North Korea for understanding Thailand’s political situation and acknowledging the legitimacy of the junta government...."

Govt Wants To Raise Fares of 'Low-Cost' Airlines

BANGKOK – Thailand’s military government is asking domestic “low-cost” airlines to raise their ticket prices to prevent stealing market share from inter-provincial bus companies.

Thailand's Minister of Transport, Air Chief Marshal Prajin Janthong, said the cheap fares for domestic flights offered by low-cost airlines are hampering the business of public bus companies in Thailand.

"We cannot set the fares of low-cost airlines, but we will seek cooperation from these airlines to refrain from setting fares that are too low, because they may affect other types of public transportation," said ACM Prajin, who also sits in the ruling military junta.

His comment came after Suchinda Cherdchai, the owner of several major bus companies, filed a complaint with the government claiming that her business has been affected by domestic airlines, some of which offer prices cheaper than bus tickets.

I found this an interesting read.

Including the land where Central World and the Four Seasons sits, and 9 tonnes of gold, just to start. One huge inheritance.

Thai Education Minister: Thai education resembles North Korea

17/11/2014 - 17:20

The Education Minister and the North Korean Ambassador to Thailand mutually agreed that the education systems of both countries are rather similar and plan to develop ties by educational exchanges.

According to the Office of the Minister Newsline, Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, the Thai Education Minister, his Deputy Teerakiat Jareonsettasin, and Permanent Secretary Suthasri Wongsamarn met with Mun Song Mo, the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea on Friday at Government House.

The two agreed that the educational systems of both countries are similar. The similar elements include free 12-year basic education. Moreover, a few students from North Korea come to Thailand to study.

The Thai Education Minister proposed that the Ministry will talk with Thai universities with a view to an exchange programme with North Korean universities.
Meanwhile, the North Korean Ambassador said the country has education as one of the nation’s priorities and wished to have exchange programmes on education with Thailand in the near future.

Japanese man shaming Suvarnabhumi in Thai goes viral

Koki Aki is really, really disappointed in his adopted home’s airport, and no one is really disagreeing with him.

The Japanese expat’s detailed report of his miserable experiences at Suvarnabhumi Airport, in which he suggests Thais should be ashamed of their national gateway, has been widely read to a stunning lack of outrage or rebuke.

"I can say Suvarnabhumi Airport is the disgrace of Thailand," he posted online in both Japanese and Thai. "Thai people show terrible service to foreigners at their national airport, the very first entry point to their country."

The guy is embarrassed about how much publicity this got. Another article in BKK Post today says he's sorry the taxi driver got punished.

Now Bangkok taxis are refusing Japanese customers.

National embarrassment, if you ask me.
