Infinite / Automatic Scroll: issues, q&a, disable on desktop version

The method of changing your settings to disable Infinite Scroll has changed (April, 2018). Until the following posts are updated by their owners, these basic illustrations show the newer procedure.

1) Go to -> My FlyerTalk and select -> Settings and Options, and from there ->Edit Options on to ->Thread Display Options (scroll down to find that) and ->Infinite Scroll.

There, click on or touch

Infinite Scroll
Automatically load the next page in a thread by continuing to scroll down when viewing the desktop style

How to opt out:

If you opt out, your pagination will revert to the “classic” style when you are logged into your FT account. Bear in mind that if you visit FT before logging in, you will see the infinite scroll.

To opt out, go to

MyFlyerTalk > Edit Options > Miscellaneous Options > “Disable Desktop Infinite Scroll”

Click the check box and click SAVE CHANGES.

I can't stand the infinite scroll. Not only is the sticky bar at the bottom annoying and takes up space, but I used to scroll tot he end and then post my reply. Now it just keeps loading never ending posts so I never get to the comment box.

Thanks so much for providing an opt-out. I know this is incredibly old forum software, but vB 5.x is awful, and 4.x is full of problems as well. If it ain't broke don't fix it ;)

serfty Jan 18, 2017 3:23 pm

It works very poorly during my daily train commute where GSM internet connection quality varies widely from second to second, minute to minute.

I wondered what was going on when I switched to several tabs and found only a few posts had loaded.

Normally, I read one thread while loading others in tabs; generally they load at 40 per page eventually. It becomes a form of buffering.

With Infinite scroll this does not occur. Basically it is inefficient.

I have had to turn it off.

omarr Jan 18, 2017 3:43 pm

I opted out and no longer have the "forum jump" drop-down at the bottom of thread pages. Also, on multi-page threads, the current page number is no longer highlighted.

edit: Though I opted out of infinite scroll, the forum style was still set to "FT Infinite Scroll". Changing it to "vBulletin 3 FT Style 3.7.6 PL2" fixed things for me. Maybe worth adding a note when checking the opt-out box.

Silver Fox Jan 18, 2017 3:49 pm

That bar at the bottom of the screen is annoying and intrusive. Opted out.

It seems like you mean the Quick Reply box; yes, that box is no longer there. Now, you can simply click the REPLY link on the far left of the menu bar at the bottom of the page when you want to make a post.

It's still there once I opted out, and this is what I prefer. This is how a forum should look.

IBxAnders Jan 18, 2017 5:22 pm

We deployed fixes for the opt-out functionality - it should fix the issue with missing forum jump dropdown in the footer and pagination that someone reported above.

LIH Prem Jan 18, 2017 5:36 pm

Doesn't seem to be implemented in every forum?

For example, still have quick reply box and no floating tool bar in this thread. I've seen this elsewhere also. Cookie or some other issue?

IBobi Jan 18, 2017 5:37 pm

It will appear once there are 15 posts in a thread.

LIH Prem Jan 18, 2017 5:40 pm

ok, that also allows the quick reply box?

another thing, the options I have don't look like the example.

There is no 'disable' radio button. What I do have is a menu for forum skin, currently set to 'use forum default. The choices inside that menu include infinite scroll.

LIH Prem Jan 18, 2017 5:42 pm

So with < 15 posts, we do get quick reply and don't get the floating toolbar and no forum jump at the bottom of the page?

-David

LIH Prem Jan 18, 2017 5:44 pm

If we change the display type at the bottom of the page, does that type stick just with that browser (ie, via a saved cookie only in that browser instance)?

I'm thinking I may want different options on iPhone/Chrome vs iPad/Chrome vs desktop/Chrome.

This will be tricky, because there are several detect processes running - Is this user Mobile? etc. The best way would be to configure your userid settings -> I don't ever want to be mobile and -> I don't ever want to use Infinite scroll. Problem with cookies is that they'll most likely be overwritten by the automated detection processes.

Refer to post #3 above -- you must go to MyFlyerTalk to see the opt-out box.

With <15 posts, the QR box is there, no floating toolbar, and the forum jump will be fixed soon so you will see it again in this situation.

didn't realize there's a 'never use mobile skin' option. That's great. I will use that, but it sounds like there's no way to have instance specific style preferences stick. I'll play with it some more later.

ok thanks .. I do see the 'disable' radio button now. Thought I was there before.

This is ludicrous. It finally "hit" for me this afternoon. I used the drop-down to change to the old display view. And any time I load a new thread that preference is lost. By "hiding" the setting in such an obscure location you're screwing users over nicely.

But at least for those who even know there is a Tech Issues forum and how to find it there's an answer.

Infinite scroll - the worst idea ever on the Internet.

Thank you for allowing opt-out.

ssbmoro Jan 18, 2017 6:55 pm

Since this update was pushed out, I keep getting redirected to the desktop site on my phone. I've tried selecting "View Mobile Site" at the bottom of the page and selecting both mobile style sheets from the style drop down selector. The page I'm currently viewing reloads with a mobile layout, but when I navigate to another page, it loads with the desktop layout. I double checked my settings and "never use mobile" isn't selected.

Browsing on an iPhone 6S, iOS 10.2 (14C92). User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 10_2 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/602.3.12 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/10.0 Mobile/14C92 Safari/602.1

Yeah no one was clamoring for infinite scroll in the user poll last summer.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...any-apply.html

"Hey let's ask what users most want to improve their FT experience, and then spend time and money working on something that's not only completely different but one of the worst ideas out there!!"

But at least we can opt out, so I guess that counts as a "win" anymore. Not that anyone will be able to find the option once the sticky announcement is gone.

It was probably a quick plugin to install, enable, and tweak. But yeah, I get your point.

echelon0911 Jan 18, 2017 8:32 pm

On the iPad, once you are onto Page 2 or more, the back arrow no longer works. It's impossible to back to the previous page unless you scroll to the top and choose a specific link.

Doc Savage Jan 18, 2017 8:36 pm

New pop up bar at bottom annoying, wastes screen space

Good grief, this new pop up bar is incredibly annoying! It's especially bad on iPad where it sucks up large amounts of screen space, but no matter what format, it's annoying to have something moving pop up and distract you. Isn't this why moving gifs are frowned on on FT?

Please get rid of this "enhancement."

Thanks!

jmrp Jan 18, 2017 9:07 pm

I whole-heartedly agree !! And, I'm on a full-sized 21 inch monitor (I don't use any "gadgets").

I changed it back to the vB style, but every time I go to a new page it takes it back to the FT Infinite scroll style. It wold be nice to be able to set your preferred default style overall, not just on a per page basis.

Glad you found it.

Mobile vs. Desktop Mode

Hi,

Using safari on iOS mobile. When opening subfora or threads the browser switches automatically back to desktop view all the time.

flyerCO Jan 18, 2017 11:38 pm

No such option is provided to disable. I jave one to disable mobile skin. However the option above doesn't appear. I use on a phone and can't use since it keeps switching.

flyerCO Jan 18, 2017 11:49 pm

Finally got disable to appear. I had to reselect mobile and it appeared. However I still keep getting switched from mobile one to the infinite scroll when I click on a link.

LtKernelPanic Jan 19, 2017 12:39 am

I actually don't mind it too much but it seems to be impossible to use the back button to go back for the main forum page after reading a thread which is really annoying if you're on the third page of a forum.

Zorak Jan 19, 2017 12:51 am

*sigh* I know some people dislike the mobile interface, but I actually WANT to use the mobile interface when I'm on my phone, and the full desktop interface when I'm on my desktop. This used to work, but now I can't get mobile to stick on my phone.

I try to be sympathetic, because I know different people have different preferences, you can't please everyone, etc., and I've worked in software for 20+ years. But it honestly sometimes feels like you guys haven't even heard of the concept of usability testing. "This works great if you use it in the exact one way we thought of. Ship it!"

Me too. Mobile FT is now in practical terms unusable for me, unless you keep selecting "Mobile Site" with every button push.

+1

Is there any way to turn this new feature off? The concept works well when viewing Flyertalk on my phone, but it's absolutely horrible on my desktop PC at work.
