Me, too.
But there is a fix, I just discovered. See here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tech...l#post29069614 Infinite scroll as a default option isn't my idea of a good idea, and yet it seems to be another case of "it's built so lets make as many people use it as possible whether it's ideal for the users or not". |
Thank you! The website was unusable with infinite scroll enabled. Every time I scrolled it would reset to some sort of midpoint of the page I was on.

Fixed? It's a feature, not a bug.

flyertalk = browser memory hog
Flyertalk seems to have astrnage way to dynamically show the posts in threads, eg;
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/prac...-passport.html When i just scroll down the thread, it dynamically adds more and more posts, it even dynamically changes the URL, eg: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/prac...assport-7.html This is a nice user experience except that it seems to kill at least my windows 7 computer - with all browsers (firefox, chrome, explorer). Open the URL, let computer sit there for a while, and the memory for the browser goes up to as many gigs as the computer has (8). All browser extensions disabled... Is there a way to change this through any setting to keep memory needs more in bounds ? |

Probably, thanks for moving my question. Just disabled infinite scroll. The idea is actually quite nice, from the usability perspective the main issue was that i would not always get the bar at the bottom that would allow me to explicitly go to the last page.
But its unusable as long as browsers just eat up memory, and given how this happened to me for all three browsers on windows, it seems as if its a systemtic issue. |

Ditto. I actually liked some of the features included in the bottom bar, but the jumping behaviour made using the site on my tablet impossible to use. Have now turned off infinite scroll and other features as well, as some of the recent "improvements" meant giving up too much functionality for me.

Option to go back to old forums? (infinite scroll - to merge)
When I click the link to view new posts in subscribed threads, just a slight scroll will cause older posts to load and then it's difficult to find the new posts.
I find going all the way to the last post of the thread and scrolling upwards to find the newest posts. The old forums didn't have any of this problem. |
Hi there! Do you still have Infinite Scroll enabled? It may be causing that problem. It can be disabled here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/prof...do=editoptions
|
Thanks I'll give it a try.

Pagination
When I read threads that have multiple pages, I cannot find the link to move to the next page. Do I have setting turned off?
EDIT:I see it now. Sorry. |
I just want to re-iterate how absolutely stupid this functionality is. I haven't seen any step back in web forum technology since I've been posting on them so this is a first.
Just to post here I had to scroll, wait, scroll, wait, etc, etc. For a multi-paged thread on a regular site, you'd just scroll and then hit last. I commonly want to scroll up to use the forum tools, but now you have to scroll many, many times to get to the top of a thread to find them. For long threads, finding particular pages is very useful. This brings 0 benefit with it. Absolutely nothing. It brings a lot of drawbacks. A better change would have been to move each page to a large number of posts. How about you guys stepping up, admitting that you made a mistake and let people who want this really useless feature opt in to it? |
Infinite Scroll ENABLED
Logged in after some time and found the [INSANE] Infinite Scroll auto-enabled on my account.

No page links, 'auto' post/page loading. I hate it. (Infinite scroll - to merge)
Sometime in the recent past, the forum has had an update which removes the links to pages on topics. This is an awkward change that results in a poor, or sometimes unusable interface.
I like to scroll by clicking the center mouse button and dragging down the page. When I do that, additional posts pop onto the screen, adjusting the page length, causing my navigation to bounce everywhere. It is difficult to return to where you started also. I also run into the problem that when I scroll to the top of the page (using a variety of methods), sometimes the earlier posts don't load, for some reason. Yet the links to other pages are gone. So it is impossible to navigate to those earlier posts! Finally, if you are in the middle or start of a very long post, and want to jump to the final post, you can't. You have to scroll down, loading every single post, to get there. Or go back to the top menu where the page links happily still exist. Please disable this function. It is unnecessary and awful. Keep the auto-loading if you must, but at least put the page links back. Thank you |
You can disable it. See https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tech...bling-etc.html, where this will ultimately be merged. Instructions in the Wikipost at the top of the page.

No way to navigate to other pages in the thread, and no way to click on the "thread title". When that happens - it's the worst, being intermittent - I usually need to close that tab and just reopen it anew, to get back to "the top". It just seems "buggy" in a variety of ways, and no clear pattern. (With a background ages ago in HW/SW QA, I found this was the kind of thing to drive us nuts... the variability of symptoms and of "when it occurs".) And I just posted elsewhere other problems, but hadn't known for sure whether this (described here) was a "thing" or not. It's a thing....! GC |

Sorry quite a long thread to read through and can't see anything in the wiki - but when clicking on an email alert it seems to jump to the new post (as per old behaviour) then jump back up to the top of the page - quite annoying to then have to try and work out where the new posts are. Can this be fixed??

Co-Moderator Help? Thanks. Ooops - I just tried one more time, and the link worked. But I had tried about 5 or 6 times previously, just now. What's happening? GC |

GC And "MyFlyerTalk" doesn't have a "Edit" choice anywhere. Also, when I finally found the "disable" choice, it looked totally different from the screen shot saved. If the entire page formatting has changed, perhaps the instructions here/above could be edited (or a new pointer?) so that it reflects the new display. I still cannot find anything marked "Edit". But as an aside, I've found navigating FT much more difficult than any of the other Forums/Fora where I'm active. I assumed it was "just me", but after some time, it's not much better. Also, there is no full "TOC" or index/list of sub-forum/thread topics. Finding "Disability", for example, one must first *find* that it even exists. Once finding it, getting back is... tricky. Which of the headers in the left IS that in anyway...? Is there an expandable version of those left had headers? And here, every two or three characters is hanging before I can see what I'm typing... even in the middle of a word. This "feels" the same as the scrolling problem, where it suddenly jumps. And sometimes the "clickable" boxes, such as "Preview Post" just aren't clickable. Later, they are... GC |

The email is just the standard one - example link for this thread was https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/show...4&goto=newpost It doesn't seem to happen consistently - just sometimes. Perhaps best plan is to disable infinite scroll? |

Yes, Infinite Scroll is on by default and turning it off can resolve some issues.

I'm happy now but I suggest infinite scroll be disabled by default. I see no advantage and it causes a lot of problems and is buggy.
|
Shame it can't be turned of on the mobile/smartphone interface.
|
Infinite Scrolling and the suspicious advertising pop-ups are both very bad for us mobile Flyertalk users.

The second post needs to be updated as the functionality option is now under :
My FlyerTalk->Edit Options->Thread Display Options |
Infinite scroll just came back for me. I'm on desktop, on chrome 65. It's disabled in my flyertalk settings, so I have no way of getting rid of it now. Please fix it, as it makes browsing flyertalk super annoying.
Edit: It seems to come and go. |

Automatic Scrolling (infinite scroll)
Can we please disable automatic scrolling? Or at least make it an option and not the default?
|
You can disable Infinite Scrolling in your Edit Options page: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/prof...do=editoptions
