It may by of interesting to those technically minded that when using Dial-Up I have no trouble; it's only with broadband where the problem is happening for me.

cblaisd May 23, 2005 5:06 pm

Can one of the FT tech staff please comment on all of this? Thanks.

StarG May 23, 2005 7:37 pm

www.flyertalk.com seems to be back normal.

Likewise. Thanks for posting the workaround address!

It's fairly simple -- the secondary flyertalk web server dropped over the weekend. Fixing the problem required me to go to the colocation facility about 60 miles away yesterday.

SEA_Tigger May 24, 2005 10:01 am

It's working great now, John, so many thanks!

Yuck.

Thanks for letting us know. ^

Anyone else finding it slow at the moment? Painfully slow.

Ona 512kbps connection here with every other website doing well

RSSrsvp May 27, 2005 6:51 am

Ft is crawling right now. I am on a DSL line and this is the slowest that I have seen it in some time. I wonder if by turning the "signatures" feature back on, this has some how affected the speed of the board?

FT started it's current slowdown about 9 hours ago. The signatures have been up and running for nearly a week now and I'd think that if they were the cause that FT would have been continously slow.
I'm guessing it's a similar webserver issue to what John at Webflyer reported on 5/24.

SEA_Tigger May 27, 2005 7:53 am

It was very slow last night, as well as this morning, but about three minutes ago performance rapidly improved so hopefully whatever was causing the issue has been addressed by the FlyerTalk IT team (thanks!).

RSSrsvp May 27, 2005 9:13 am

It is back to normal speed right now. Did someone at the House of Miles make any adjustments?

Mikel at Webflyer May 27, 2005 9:22 am

I personally witnessed John's magic fingers dancing over his keyboard, casting an assortment of technical spells on the evil slowdown, and bringing peace and tranquility back to the land of FT.

It was quite the display :D

Shareholder May 29, 2005 8:15 pm

It's also running faster tonight than it has for months on my iMac. As I have reported in the past, I have used several iMacs running different browsers and varying between OS9 and OSX and all have crawled along since that last batch of "improvements". At first I thought it might just be a factor of fewer members using the site tonight, in the middle of a US holiday weekend. Let's hope this is for real! Thanks tech guys at FT, if you have fixed the problem.

SEA_Tigger May 31, 2005 9:56 am

Just like to note that as of this morning, using the www.flyertalk.com address, I am starting to get "Page Not Found" errors again.

Coming in via IP (64.78.185.85), I am not having these issues.

John noted that the issue last time was one of the webservers going offline...

Shareholder May 31, 2005 1:05 pm

Well that was a short-lived experience. I figured the extra speed must have been a factor of a major drop off in FT use over the Memorial Day weekend, which now appears to be the case. We Mac users and back to an even worse crawl than PC users...

John at Webflyer Jun 1, 2005 9:00 am

One of the webservers is sporadically giving us fits. I spent a couple hours yesterday working on it and found an issue between the webserver and mail server occasionally blocking each other on that machine.

We'll see if what I found helps resolve the problem permanently.

On the bright side it didn't happen on a Friday night. ;)

SEA_Tigger Jun 1, 2005 10:14 am

Sorry - I forgot to add that it was working fine on DNS next time I came in, and has been working fine for me since. ^

cblaisd Jun 13, 2005 8:28 pm

Very slow again....

VERY slow again for the last half hour. Some pages taking almost 2 minuts to load.

airbus320 Jun 13, 2005 8:31 pm

Slow indeed....

GUWonder Jun 13, 2005 8:37 pm

Glad to know it's not just me/my connection. :)

Apparently, we are back to the:

FlyinHawaiian Jun 13, 2005 9:34 pm

Was very slow - now much, much better.

Kiwi Flyer Jun 13, 2005 9:41 pm

chimoe125 Jun 13, 2005 9:53 pm

same here.

FWAAA Jun 13, 2005 9:54 pm

Much faster now. Thanks, Randy (and thanks to all of the FT technical team)!

The speed is back for you to soon join the crowd. :D

HOM, thank you. ^^

Slowness Issues?

This might be an option for you to look at. My company, Infopop, hosts and provides forum/message board software for some of the largest companies in the world and have been around since 1996.

If you're interested in getting a quote to replace this board with our software, please contact me for alternatives.

Regards,
Jeff S.
Infopop Corp.

Randy Petersen Jun 16, 2005 12:50 pm

Thanks Jeff, but we actually came from Infopop. Before we migrated to vB, we were extremely happy customers of UBB and we simply outgrew it, thus the move to vB. We did look at your original Infopop services before we made our move but i think the pricing at the time was viewed as unreasonable, something like $80K a year for the posts we had and the traffic and while i appreciate that you pricing has stabilized - congrats on the success - we'd still have to take three of your Mt. Raniers and still be limited on the 1 million cap you have on active or archived threads. I'm thinking we'd be around $5K a month in our needs with you right now.

We occasionally get a little slowness but it doesn't last too long and sometimes it's related to an individuals service anyway.

But overall we're in pretty good shape and actually launching another server toward FlyerTalk in the next few weeks anyway.

Again, nice to see you stop by and honestly - we would not be FlyerTalk if it had not been for the excellent that UBB was at the time we began FT in 1998. The ease of the BB software to operate and more importantly the service we got was simply very much a part of our success today. Of course our long time members might also remember when we approached one million posts at the time how UBB corrupted some of their most popular threads.... but that's another story.

Cheers,
Randy

P.S. and continued great success with Infopop, you've come a long way.

FlyinHawaiian Jul 21, 2005 5:14 pm

Any webserver problems at the House of Miles? Since about 4 p.m. PDT, pages have been taking about 15-30 seconds to load. (IE 6.0, T1/LAN connection).

Thanks!

airbus320 Jul 21, 2005 5:22 pm

...same thing here....

FWAAA Jul 21, 2005 5:25 pm

Very, very slow here, but it has sped up in the last minute or so.

FlyinHawaiian Jul 21, 2005 5:26 pm

Yes, it's really fast now. Thanks guys! ^ ^ ^

DEK Jul 22, 2005 9:20 am

Still very slow for me. It's very frustrating trying to navigate between forums and trying to post and having to wait at least 2 minutes for the pages to come up.

cblaisd Sep 20, 2005 10:51 pm

And back to the top.

Really crawling and lurching again right now.

jfe Sep 20, 2005 10:58 pm

Speed a little better now, I couldn't access it a few minutes ago.

But I guess it was for the best, I went and did 30 minutes on the treadmill instead ;)

serfty Sep 20, 2005 11:16 pm

Extremely Slow; it even logged me off somehow!

ClueByFour Sep 20, 2005 11:23 pm

For the FT guys:

Dunno how the load balancer is set to work (or what method you are using), but if it's a hardware device you may want to enable health checking and automatic removal from the LB pool if a host is unresponsive to ICMP, http (with appropriate content checking) or ideally either.

"Unit 1" appears dead from the outside.
"Unit 2" is functioning (or will be, if anyone sees this post :) ).

If I hit "the intended URL", I get nada. Now, I'm not changing my public IP, so if ya'll are balancing by source destination with any kind of persistance, I get it. If not, the LB is currently questionable in addition to "unit 1."
